HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  WE ARE BACK ON THE BLOG AS WE BEGIN OUR NOVEL STUDY OF NUMBER THE STARS.  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 1:

1.  In the beginning of Chptr. 1, Lois Lowry references a physical feature of both Annemarie and Ellen.  She states, "Annemarie's silvery blonde hair flew behind her, and Ellen's dark pigtails bounced against her shoulders".  What do you believe is Lowry's purpose for including such detail about each of the characters?  Explain.

2.  After being stopped by the soldiers on the street corner, Annemarie looked back to see that Ellen's face, usually rosy-cheeked, was pale and her dark eyes were wide.  Why and/or what may be the cause for Ellen's expression?  Explain.

3.  Peter Nielson often brought the "Free Danes", a Danish newspaper, to the Johansens.  He was very careful in his delivery and after Mama and Papa read the paper, Mama always burned it.  What might be the reason for hiding and/or being so careful in delivering the paper?  What would make Mama burn the paper after it was read?  Be specific in your explanation?

1.  In Chptr. 18 when Brian dropped the hatchet into the lake, he said, "That was the kind of thing I would have done before," he said to the lake, to the sky, to the trees.  "When I came here--I would have done that.  Not now.  Not now..."  Explain why Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness.

1.  In Chptr. 17, Brian takes the time to sit back and take in the beauty of his surroundings; the sights, smells, sounds of it all.  Brian wondered if he somehow got out of his current situation and returned home, would he go back to living the way he had lived prior to the crash, or would it be just the opposite?  In other words, would he view life and his surroundings differently?   What are your thoughts?  Explain.

1.  In Chptr. 16, Brian had been attacked by a moose and hit by a tornado.  Just like that...everything changed.  Brian thinks, "A flip of some giant coin and he was the loser". 

But, Brian thinks, "There is a difference now--there really is a difference.  I might be hit, but I'm not done".  What do you think Brian means by the red, bold printed quote.  Be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 16, Brian "tests" nature.  He thinks, "Come on--is that the best you can do?  Is that the only thing you can hit me with--a moose and a tornado?"  It was at this point that Brian realized he had a job to do.  However, there was a difference now.  Brian had changed, and he was tough.  Brian thinks, "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head".  Explain what the final quote (in bold print) means.

1.   In Chptr. 12, Brian was surprised to feel full from eating the raspberries and drinking the red berry juice.  For so long, he has only known the hunger.  He realized that although he felt full, there was still a hunger there, but not like it was before--not one that was tearing at him. 

Brian thought, "This was hunger that he knew would be there always, even when he had food--a hunger that made him look for things, see things.  A hunger to make him hunt."

1.  In Chptr. 7, Brian does not like what he sees as he saw his reflection in the water.  "Ugly; very, very ugly" he thought.  He slaps the water with his hand to destroy the mirror.  Explain what is meant by Brian trying to destroy the mirror.  Be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 7, Brian encounters a bear.  Yet, the bear causes him no harm.  Regardless, the encounter is very much still in Brian's thoughts.  As darkness came into his shelter, Brian took the hatchet out of his belt, putting it by his head and holding the handle.  Why do you think Brian chose to keep the hatchet, for the very first time, close to him.  Explain.

1.  In Chptr. 5, Brian knows that he is alone in the north woods of Canada.  However, he is noted as thinking, "Here I am and that is nowhere".  What does Brian mean by his thoughts?  Explain.

2.  Brian learned from his English teacher, Perpich, that thinking positive and staying on top of things was important.  Perpich was always telling his kids to get motivated.  Perpich also drummed into the heads of his students the following:  "You are your most valuable asset.  Don't forget that.  You are the best thing you have."

1.  In Chptr. 4, Brian thinks..."It was over then.  The crash".  He was alive.  The crash is over and I am alive; he thought.  Then his eyes closed and he lowered his head for minutes that seemed longer.  When he opened them again it was evening. . .

In the above event from Chptr. 4, what can we infer happened to Brian?  Explain your reasoning.  Be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 4, as Brian looked at his surroundings, again, he could see the reflections of the trees at the other end of the lake.  Upside down in the water they seemed like another forest, an upside-down forest to match the real one.

1.  In Chptr. 3, the Cessna has already run out of fuel, and the plane is going down.  Brian's thought was "Going to Die".  As he tries to fly the plane, "The plane went into a glide, a very fast glide that ate altitude, and suddenly there weren't any lakes."
