HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE  YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 5 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 5, Brian knows that he is alone in the north woods of Canada.  However, he is noted as thinking, "Here I am and that is nowhere".  What does Brian mean by his thoughts?  Explain.

2.  Brian learned from his English teacher, Perpich, that thinking positive and staying on top of things was important.  Perpich was always telling his kids to get motivated.  Perpich also drummed into the heads of his students the following:  "You are your most valuable asset.  Don't forget that.  You are the best thing you have."

(a)  Explain what Perpich means by what is quoted and in bold red print above.
(b)  Explain how this quote and thought process might benefit Brian in his current situation.  Be specific.

  2. 1. I think that what Brian was really saying when he said "here I am and that is nowhere." Is like saying your in the middle of nowhere , your actually somewhere your just doesn't know where.

    2. (a) I think that what Perpich meant is that you are the most valuable you have because even if you had a lot of other tools you could not use them without "you". And if "you" were not "you" then you could decide what to do with your tools.

  3. 1. "Here I am and that is no where" means that there are only trees, plants, and maybe some streams or some type of water source. Maybe even food sources.

    2. What Perpich meant was you are the best thing to yourself. You figure out things and you find out solutions to a problem. (b) This quote might help Brian because he can be motivated to build a shelter, find food and not sit around to wait for someone even though there might not be anyone coming to save him

  6. 1. In Chptr. 5, Brian knows that he is alone in the north woods of Canada. However, he is noted as thinking, "Here I am and that is nowhere". What does Brian mean by his thoughts? Explain. Brian means he doesn't know where he is because he crashed in the middle of somewhere. So by saying "Here I am and that is nowhere" he means he doesn't know where.

    2. Brian learned from his English teacher, Perpich, that thinking positive and staying on top of things was important. Perpich was always telling his kids to get motivated. Perpich also drummed into the heads of his students the following: "You are your most valuable asset. Don't forget that. You are the best thing you have." Brians English teacher meant that he could help himself more than any kind of tool, this might help him stay motivated and keep him positive so he has a chance to survive.

  7. 1. I think when Brian says here i am and that is nowhere i think that means that he has no idea what to do or where he is at.

2.(A) I think what Perpich is trying to say is that without you, your tools and supplies would be nothing. For example, a tool, such as a hammer, needs someone to help it work.
    (B) I think what Perpich says will help Brian in his situation by motivating him to get food and other things for a chance to survive.

  8. 1. He means that he is in the woods without any civilization 2. He means that you are the most important tool because if you have other things you won't be able to use them without yourself and it could benefit him because he could use his mind to make tools and find food. - Vasea Cebotari

  10. When Brian says "here I am and that is nowhere". I believe he knows he is in the north woods of Canada, but he is not sure were in the woods he is, because in chapter 5 it said that he remembered the plane going off course from the pilot slamming on the pedal during his heart attack, sending the plane off course. Him knowing that, Brian also knows that the plane may have gone some amount of hundred miles off course.

A.) When Brian's English teacher said "You are your most valuable asset. Don't forget that. You are the best thing you have." I think he means that if you don't care about yourself, you may die, and you are very important. I believe he also means that you are the only one who knows how to survive anything your way.

B.) I think in Brian's situation this means that if he lets himself down, and do not think of himself as the most important resource he has, then he may not survive being in the woods alone. It also means that no matter what he thinks, he should always put himself first during this survival "fight" of life or death.

  11. What he meant was he had no idea where he was and he didn't know what to do

  12. Q1 The author means Brian has you food you also doesn't know if he has good drinkable water.
Q2 a. The author is saying that it doesn't matter the "things" you have in life, what matters is what kind of a person you are.
Q2 b. In Brian's current situation, this would help him realize that even though he's alone he has what it takes to survive. Even though he only has a hatchet , he will still be able to survive using what he has in himself. He has is brain, determination , and willpower.

  15. 1. The author is saying that Brian has no food. Also, he doesn't know if he has drinkable water. He does not know how far away he is from an airport. He does not know the area at all.
2.a. The author means that Brian's most valuable asset is not the "things" that he has, but what he has within himself.
    2. b. Brian can realize that although he only has a hatchet, he can survive by using things within himself, like his brain, willpower, determination and strength.

  16. 1.I think that Brian knows he is in the middle of the Canadian forest but is unsure of his exact location and doesn't know how to get help, he feels like a needle in a haystack.

    2. (a) I think that Perpich means that out of all the stuff you own, good and bad, you are the most important, no matter what anyone else chooses to say. Like, if you had a million dollars, all that money would be worth nothing without you to spend it.

    (b) I think that this quote benefits Brian by letting him know that, although he has no tools or supplies except for his hatchet, he can still find a way to survive alone in the woods, because he has himself and that's enough.

  17. In chapter 5 Brian knows he is in somewhere in the north woods of Canada, however he says ''here I am and nowhere'' that means he doesn't know where he is but that he's in a place with trees, animals, water and more trees. He doesn't know the exact place he's in.

[PART A} When Perpich means by what is quoted or bold in red in the question means that he has nothing and none to trust or follow but himself he also is the only thing to depend on so he should think to himself that it means that it's all he needs to survive is HIMSELF.

{PART B} I think that the quote would benefit Brian by letting him know he is the resource or main thing he needs since he has nothing to help him but a hatchet and himself.

  18. 1. What Brian means is that he does not know exactly where he is but he does know that he is in the woods, in Canada.

    2. (a) What Perpich means is that your brain is the most useful and valuable thing that you have and you should always use it and think of how to solve a problem.
    (b) This quote might benefit Brian because it will remind him to think of ways to get food and thinking positive will force him to not give up and keep trying to come up with a solution.

  20. 1.I think he thinks this because he's there and he's alive but he says that where he is, is now here because he's in the woods and he considers the woods to be no where.

    2. (a) I think what Perpich means by this is that you should be the most important because your brain is what you have got to use when in a situation like Brian trying to survive like Brian, in the wilderness.
    (b) This quote is important to use in a situation like this because it could help Brian know that he has to do what is required to survive especially in the middle of the Canadian forest with no food unless you hunt for it or find a plant that produces food that you can eat but hunting animals that are bigger and stronger than you is probably a challenge.

    1. Brian means that he is in the woods in Canada but he is alone with no one to help him.

2.(a) He is his most valuable asset because he can think and use his resouces well allowing himself to survive.

2.(b) This thought might make him think more about his current situation and how he can learn to survive.

  23. 1. What I think this meant that he knew he was in the woods but he considered the woods "nowhere" because it is really an unknown place to many people, and he didn't know exactly where he was in the woods.

    2. a) I think what Perpich meant by this is that you are the most important thing you have. Meaning if you are stuck in a situation your limbs and brain are very useful items.

    b) This quote could be important to Brian because this might remind him of what to do in a situation like this and to keep an idea of what he can do for survival. Also this can remind him what his body is really able to do especially in this situation.

  24. 1. When it says "Here I am and that is nowhere" it means that Brian is starting to think about what happened. He realizes that he is in north woods of Canada, but he doesn't know where. So this question basically means that Brian is in the middle of the north woods of Canada but doesn't know where.

2.(a) When Perpich says "You are your most valuable asset. Don't forget that. You are the best thing you have" it means that you are something special and you shouldn't forget that. You should take care of yourself.

    (b) When Perpich says "You are your most valuable asset. Don't forget that. You are the best thing you have" it could help Brian in his situation because he is all alone and if he depends on anyone else to come save him, that might not happen.

  25. 1. he said that he is nowhere because either he knows that he s in Canada but thats all or he is saying that he could be dead 2. A. Prerprich means that you can do more than all of your tools B.as long as he is alive you are the best thing you have

  26. 1. This means that Brian is alone with no one to help or rescue him

    2. (a)This means that when Perpich says that you are your'e most valuable asset he meant that you are the most special thing in your life because without your'eself you wouldn't be alive

(b)Perpich's statement was meant to remind Brian to focus on what the situation is currently happening in time
