RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 6, HATCHET, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 6 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 6, Brian was thinking about the time of day based on the sun.  More importantly, in using the sun to reflect on the time of day, Brian began thinking about what his Mom would be doing.  Brian thinks, "Today she would be going to see him.  Explain the significance of the word "him" being written in italics.  What is the meaning behind using the italics?

2.  Brian determined that as long as he stayed close to the lake, so he could keep the water on his right, he wouldn't get lost while looking for berries/food.  "Simple.  Keep it simple.  I am Brian Robeson..."  Explain why Brian's thinking (what is quoted) might be beneficial to his survival.  Be specific.

    1. I think Brian meant that his mom was going to see the mysterious man in the station wagon. I think the word him was in italics because him was referring to someone Brian didn't particuraly like. ~ Gabrielle Stevenson

    2. I think the sentence " Simple. Keep it simple. I am Brian Robeson... " was beneficial to Brian's survival because if he got lost he would lose his shelter place, and Brian would be far away from the plane and so when someone came to get him they may not be able to find him. ~ Gabrielle Stevenson

      I like your thoughts in question 1 because the passage didn't say who him was. I also like num. 2 because if he loses his shelter then he loses his water and food to, so he NEEDS to keep it simple.

    1. The meaning behind it is the word him is sad. If Brian's Mom came to see him and he wasn't there they would both be sad.
    2.He keeps saying keeps it simple because he doesn't want to get lost, but Brian wants to go get berries so he has to keep an eye on where he is so he doesn't get lost and he can get some food

    1) I think when Brian said "him", he probably didn't want to bring up his name or he just didn't like "him" very much. Also in the story Brian said that he / him was the main reason of the divorce.

    2) I think what Brian meant by " keep it simple " was that if Brian wanted to survive he had to take his mind of big ideas like somebody come getting him in the next day or two. Thee mains things he needs to focus on are shelter, food and water. He needs to survive first before he thinks BIG. ~ Kelly Lee

      I like your reasoning for why he is saying "keep it simple" by saying if he keeps his mind off of big things like they may come in a day or two, but to focus food water and shelter. ~Emily Scott

    1. I think it means that Brian's mother was going to see the mysterious man that she met in the station wagon.

    2. Because if he went on this"HUGE" journey and he lost his shelter he would 1 have no food or shelter and 2 if he is lost and someone does come he would never be found and be left behind.

    1.I think him was spelled in italics because it was referring to the man in the blond hair that he saw. I think she made up someone she was going to see on Thursday and Brian figured out who she was really seeing on all those Thursdays.

    2. I think that when Brian says "Simple. Keep it simple. I am Brian Robeson..." it relates to the survival because if he went everywhere to find food he would get lost from his "home" and if someone came looking for him because they found the plane in the lake from above that they wouldn't find him because he would be so far away.

    The author put him in italics because the author meant Brian's mother was going to see the man in the station wagon It means that he is a person that he doesn't really like.
    Q.2
    The quote "Keep it simple. Simple. I am Brian Roberson...." means that if he just does what it takes to survive (like getting water, food and simple shelter), he will avoid. If he tried to make something elaborated for shelter he could get hurt, tire himself out or get,etc.

    1. The meaning of the word him being used in italics is to tell the reader to say him in a certain way to show Brian's disgust, or anger towards the man who was with his mother.

    2. I think that keeping it simple will help Brian to always understand his whereabouts
    and not get confused.

    It uses the italics because he would not be there. 2. It would be beneficial because it would help him remember and it would be easier for him to survive.

    1. I think the him in italics is trying to express his feelings and how it would have been if all this hadn't happened.
    2. I think that staying close to the lake is important to his survival because if he goes to far from the lake and gets lost and can't find water or berries he can die or a wild animal can attack him.

    1.I think that him is put in italics because he didn't want to say the mans name because it would upset him to much or maybe he did not know the mans name but I think the first answer would be more reasonable

    2.I think that Brian keeps thinking,"keep it simple" because maybe if he starts to think of a bunch of things he needs to survive he might start having a panic attack.

    1.) I think "him" means the man Brian's man was with in the wagon, the man that Brian believes his mom wanted to get a divorce. Also that he does not really like that man, and I think Brian does not know his name and has discuss to "him". The italics probably are for it to stand out.

    2.) I think it is important because it would keep him from getting frustrated, maybe upset or overly worked up over things, also to calm him down. It is a strategy for Brian, to keep calm and to stay focus. It was also keep himself from getting angry.

    #1. in chapter 6, Brian was thinking about the time based on the sun. Brian also thought about his mom would be doing, today she would be seeing him. I think that this means Brian's mom would be with him and not with that man he saw in the station wagon.

    #2. I think that when Brian says ''Keep it simple. Simple. I am Brian Roberson.....'' means he shouldn't worry about any BIG things like people getting him. All he needs to think about is food, water and shelter.

    1."Him"is talking about himself(Brian)and how his mom goes and sees him on Thursdays .

    2.His thinking is "I know I am Brian and I am 13 years old and I am heading to Canada to see my dad and I got in a plane crash with a pilot that had a heart attack " and that is how he keeps his thoughts simple by stateing simple facts about himself that does not confuse him.

    1. why I think he used the italics is because if he did not the readers could of thought that they were talking about Brian or some other character i the novel; The italics give you a better idea of who "him" is.

    2. I think that Brian was telling himself to keep it simple because if he thought to much of what he was doing he could get completely lost and do the wrong thing or if he thought to much it would make him think what he was doing is more complicated then it was .

    1.In the passage HIM is in italics because his mother would be going to see the mystery man, and Brian didn't like the mystery man.

    2. Brian is trying to "keep it simple" because he needs to remember everything, if he doesn't keep it simple he could start to forget important things such as: where camp is, where food is, where water is ETC. that is why I think Brian is trying to "keep it simple".

It is also the reason why he had to fly to Canada and had the plane crash. It is in italics because it is very important and Brian has many different feelings about him- the man his mother is seeing.


    2. Brian determined that as long as he stayed close to the lake, so he could keep the water on his right, he wouldn't get lost while looking for berries/food. "Simple. Keep it simple. I am Brian Robeson..." It means that sometimes you can become overwhelmed in a stressful situation, and it helps to keep it simple and basic.

    Question1: The meaning of italics is that the author wants us to pay attention to the to the word him because i predict it will be with lots of significance later on i this chapter

    Question2: Most people who are in the wild go mad because there hungry and forget their own names brian doesn't want that for him

    I think that in the italics it is trying to say that Brian's mother was going to see the blond hair stranger and he was saying it in a disgust voice because that was the secret.

    2. I think that that he wants to keep it simple and stay calm so he does not worry about anything but the task at hand which is finding water,food, and what to do for warmth.

    1. It is in italics because Brian doesn't like him and thinks he is the reason his parents are in a divorce.

    2.He is thinking simple because if he thought big he would be scared of the situation he was in.

    1. I think ''him'' is in itallics because it is refering to the blonde head man in the station wagon and Brian feels hatred toward ''him''.

    2. It is beneficial to Brian's survival because it will help Brian stay on task, focus and concentrate on finding food and making a shelter.

    1. he is the man that his mom was with in the wagon and Brian blames him for the divorce so Brian doesn't like him 2.Brian thought it was simple because there was a berry bush near his shelter and water supply all along
