RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 5, NUMBER THE STARS, MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 2016
HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! WELCOME BACK FROM WINTER BREAK AND TO OUR BLOG. BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHTPR. 5 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
1. In Chptr. 5, Ellen reflects on the day when she found out about Lise's death. Ellen said sadly, "I remember it was raining". She said, "it was still raining the next morning when Mama told me." "Mama was crying, and the rain made it seem as if the whole world was crying." Explain what Ellen might have meant by the "whole world was crying".
2. Foreshadowing is when the author gives clues that something is going to happen without telling you exactly what might take place.
In Chptr. 5, Annemarie and Ellen were supposed to be normal sisters; so, they really had no need to whisper. In fact Papa said they could giggle and talk because the bedroom door was closed.
"But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night." And so they whispered. Applying the definition of foreshadowing (above), explain what the bold printed quote might mean. Be specific.
