HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 14 OF HATCHET:
1. In Chptr. 14, Brian thinks about the few times in his survival process that he was "lazy"--that he didn't complete things far enough to make them right. However, one thing Brian did learn was that "Nothing in nature was lazy". Explain what the quoted phrase means. Be specific.
2. People often think of "mistakes" as something negative or bad. What might be the advantage(s) to Brian in making "mistakes". Give examples and explain.
1. It means that nature is not lazy because plants are growing and animals are walking around looking for food and other things to help them survive and in Brian's case when he crashed he just laid on the ground and did nothing to help him survive till he knew he had to do something then just sit there and hope a plain or some kind of object to rescue him.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage would be that he is learning from his mistake. That means if he ever does what he did again and made a mistake this time he would mostly know how to do it because he might not get it the second time he tries it might take him a couple of tries to do it. An example would be how I said in the beginning of this question is that he is learning from his mistakes. ~ Camryn
An example means a example from the book.
Delete1. It means that in the wilderness nothing stops the are always looking for shelter ,finding food ,or helping their groups out so they don't have time to be lazy and sit around.
ReplyDelete2. A advantage is he has learn from his mistakes
Ex. When he tried to catch the fish he remembered that water bends light so he had to try to use the spear at a angle.
Great job Tyler I like your example for when he learned from his mistake.
DeleteGood job I liked how you said the example.
DeleteFor Q2 I liked that you went back into the book to find the example.
Delete1. I think Brian means that when he said "nature is not lazy" is that when you have to survive in the wilderness things don't come easy you have to figure it out.
ReplyDelete2. The advantage for Brian when he makes mistakes is that he can learn from them.
Ex. When Brian tried to cut himself and realized he shouldn't let death get in his head.
I like how you said that in q. 1 how things in nature don't come easy, you have to work for them. In q. 2 I like how you said you can lean from your mistakes.

ReplyDelete1. In Chptr. 14, Brian thinks about the few times in his survival process that he was "lazy"--that he didn't complete things far enough to make them right. However, one thing Brian did learn was that "Nothing in nature was lazy". Explain what the quoted phrase means. Be specific.
ReplyDeleteThe quote "Nothing in nature was lazy" means that in nature everything needs to work for what they need because if they get lazy they could get eaten, hurt, or starve. If all the stopped trying to get food and just sit around they would die of starvation or thirst. EX. When Brian was sitting around at the beginning of the book he became very hungry and just got more tied until he actually got up and did something.
2. People often think of "mistakes" as something negative or bad. What might be the advantage(s) to Brian in making "mistakes". Give examples and explain.
Some reasons mistakes can help you is if you get hurt something you could learn not to do that thing anymore like if you stick your hand in fire or put your hand on the stove you will get burnt and you could learn from that mistake. Another reason mistakes can be good is if you mess up something good might come out of it, EX. Someone was rude at a restaurant one day and the waiter cut their potatoes very thin and over cooked them and the customers liked it so the new (mistake) invention was called the potato chip.
I like how you added a bit of humor with your example for the second problem.
Deleteits not humor its true.
DeleteI loved your response and then at the end of number 2 you taught me something I didn't know so good job and thank you.
DeleteYou cant be lazy in the wild because if you are chopping wood, you need to make sure that an animal is not there because if you anger it it will attack you so you need to make sure you are always on your guard.
ReplyDeleteI can see where you are going, but I think the question wanted you to explain how the THINGS IN NATURE itself, are not lazy, not a human.
DeleteMistakes can be good because say you pet an alligator (do not do it) and it bites off your hand, you will know not to do it again.
ReplyDeleteGood job but you could have given more description about way you would not do it any more.
Delete#1. ''Nothing in nature is lazy'' means that animals and plants either hunt, look for food and shelter or die because you can't wait till someone gives you food or shelter. They do things like hunt for food, search for shelter, look for water or they die. If you are lazy and just sleep all day not caring about any thing but sleep, chances are somethings going to come and eat you.
ReplyDelete#2. Brian's advantages in making ''mistakes'' is he'll learn to do the right thing instead of the wrong thing. Example: If you burn your self because you got close to the oven and your clothes caught on fire you learn that you shouldn't go close to the oven.
1. I think he means that plants are growing all the time and animals are looking for food.
ReplyDelete2.He may learn from his mistakes and not make them again.
I think that your answers could be better if you added more detail. I also disagree with number one where you said the plants are always the food for the animals . Some animals enjoy fruit but bigger animals (Ex: the bear) will need to hunt for a meatier meal.
Delete1. I think the phrase ''Nature is not lazy'' Is saying that nature has no time to be lazy. It is either be lazy and die or eat and survive. all animals need to get their food by hunting it or finding it. If Brian chooses to be lazy, he will not want to start working again because he has been working so hard and is tired. For example, If you have a list of like 15 things to do and you've done 5 of them, you should not stop now or else it will take forever to get them all done and you would dread it even more than the first time because you were being lazy.
ReplyDelete2.I think their are advantages to making mistakes for a variety of reasons:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. When you make a mistake, you can usually not fix it, but then you know you will try not to do it again.
2.you can not prevent from mistakes happening such as tripping and breaking a glass cup because you were most likely not trying too, it just happens.
3.you may even learn something we did not know like if we got a math problem and see what you did wrong.
4.Show us when we are not listening
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are all human and make mistakes, and most of the time we can not do anything about it but we remember to be more careful next time,
1. I think that nothing in nature is lazy means that nothing in nature, animal or insect, will do anything halfway. Everything in nature will do everything until it is complete, no procrastinating or putting it off.
ReplyDeleteAn advantage of Brian making mistakes is that he can analyse what he did and potentially prevent a similar mistake from happening in the future. But Brian can only learn from his mIstakes if he pays attention to where he made the mistake and how to fix them.
1) What Brian means by "nothing in the forest is lazy" is that you can not slack on your work something will happen. For example, Brian was cutting wood and while he was doing that, a skunk came and dug the turtle eggs up and ate them. He now realizes that he should of spent more time on building his shelter : "Protect food and have a good shelter. Not just a shelter to keep the wind and rain out, but a shelter to protect, a shelter to make him safe".
ReplyDelete2) I think advantage of Brian making a mistake was that he learned from is mistakes . Brian could not afford to make the same mistakes again because he is in a life or death situation. For example:
- he had to rebuild his shelter because he needs it more protection in his shelter and at first he built it to only keep the wind and the rain out (Question 1)
- in trying to catch fish he couldn't catch them because he remembered that water bends, so he needs to put his arrow at an angle.
- in building the fire he tried many things but they didn't work because you need .oxygen to start a fire. So he learned from is mistakes on building a fire.
We want to learn fro the mistakes that we have did but Brian HAS ton learn from them.
1. I think what is meant by "nothing in nature was ever lazy" is that things in nature don't take easy ways out but they have to think about things they have to do to survive and try their best to make it perfect where as Brian is making things he needs to survive without trying his hardest up until he starts working on making a better shelter and weavivg and double weaving to make it more sucure.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage to Brian making mistakes is that he learns from them an example of this is when he is fishing, he kept shooting where he thought the fish were and this was wrong because when you put something in water it seems bent but Brian realizes this and now he knows how to catch fish and he has a trap for the fish. This is his way of storing them.
I didn't get number one about the easy way out and what you where talking about. I love your number 2 response. You nailed that one.
Delete1.)I think that Brian says that things in nature were not lazy because animals needed to work on things to help them survive. The things out in nature do not have things just there for them, they have to work to survive. Brian is from the city, and now he is stranded out in the middle of the wilderness all alone. He became used to the way his parents would cook or buy food for him, so he could be lazy. Now, in nature, he needs to not be lazy, or he will not survive.
ReplyDelete2.).Brian can learn from how his bow and spear kept missing fish from hunting, and how he had been sprayed by a skunk.He learned to fix them by aiming his bow and spear a little lower so he can catch fish,and he learned to not mess with a skunk anymore so he can fix his mistakes and not do it again.Mistakes can be lessons.
good job i like how you said that mistakes can be lessons but what do you mean by this?
DeleteLessons teach you things. If you make a mistake, it's teaching you not to do something that way again. Even if you don't get it right after that, or after that, you still are learning what not to do.
Delete1. When Brian says "nothing in nature was lazy" it means that nature has "stuff" to do. To me it means that everything has a niche so everyone is busy. There is stuff to do so nothing is not doing anything. This is what I think "nothing in nature was lazy" means.
ReplyDelete2. Some advantages in Brian's mistakes could be:
- learn a lesson
- not do it again
Those are some things, some example's is that:
- He realized that the water made the fish look somewhere else than it was
- How he had been sprayed by the skunk
These are some examples of stuff he did as mistakes.
I like how you explained what could happen if you made a mistakes and what mistakes Brian has made good job
Delete- Bisola Fakayode
1. The quote "nothing in nature is lazy" means that wild animals were always looking for food, gathering food, hunting food, storing food, and always doing something for a survival reason. If animals are lazy they will make mistakes. In the text, Brian talks about how mistakes can lead to disasters.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage of making mistakes is learning from your mistakes and not making the same mistakes again. Example 1: Now Brian knows not to throw sand at a skunk because they normally give off a smelly odor when scared. Example 2: Now Brian knows to build a stronger shelter, so animals (such as skunks and porcupines) can't get in to steal food and hurt Brian.
Hunter Colson
Dear Hunter, I like your response in question 1 because of how you said that the text states that Brian's mistakes can lead to disasters.
Delete1. It means that everything in nature is doing something and if they stop doing some things thier habitat may be unbalanced
ReplyDelete2. An advantage of making mistakes is learning from them so when you make a mistake you learn not to do it again
- Bisola Fakayode
1. He means that nature was not lazy because there are animals looking for food and doing what they can to survive and plants use photosynthesis to make food and everything is busy.
ReplyDelete2. He can learn from his mistakes like when he threw sand at the skunk it sprayed him so he learned not to mess with a skunk again and he kicked a porcupine and got quills jabbed in him so he learned not to touch a porcupine.
1. He means nothing in nature is lazy ,by meaning nature never stops moving an interacting with each other ( like hunting).
ReplyDelete2.One of the negative things that Brian thinks is negative is that he nocks over the side of his lean to which help him because he was going to build another tent because he thought it wasn't worthy because things could get into his tent.
1. When you are in nature you cant just do nothing you have to go get the food and not wait for the food and you have to compete for food.
ReplyDelete2. A advantage of mistakes are you learn not to do that again like you know what you did and you know not to do that again. When Brian was making a fire he kept on messing up and he learned from those mistakes.
I like your response to number 2 but i think in number 1 there is more too compete for
Delete1. What Brian means by " nothing in nature is lazy" is that nothing in nature ever slacks off because if they do they will most likely starve or die. For example, when Brian propped some wood on a cave and called it his shelter, a skunk got in, took his eggs and burned his eyes with the fumes from it's horrible spray. After learning from this lesson, Brian made a much better and stronger shelter, with extremely tight walls, a door and a way for smoke from the fire to get out.
ReplyDelete2. An advantage to making mistakes is that Brian can learn from the mistake that he made. Although you can not just say " oh well " and give up you have to try again an use the knowledge from the failed attempt. An example of a mistake that helped Brian was when he tried to spear and then shoot for fish. He could not get any fish until he remembered that water distorts images so the fish would not be where it looked like they are. Finally, Brian was able to catch fish by aiming a little farther away than where he thought he saw them. So, his mistakes helped him learn how to catch fish.
1. In nature nothing can be lazy. If animals were lazy they wouldn't find food,shelter , or water. It's also an instinct for animals to hunt , to eat , to compete for resources. Also for plants through our eyes they just sit around and do nothing but really they are working , they are using photosynthesis and trying to make their own food their roots are trying to get water and nutrients .
ReplyDelete2. Sure Brian is going to make mistakes , we all know that, when het ries to catch fish and misses , thats a mistake, when he buries the eggs and the skunk took them which made him pay by being sprayed. But he learns from those mistakes , Just like we said in class today when we where doing the main ideas we talked about how there were advantages and disadvantages, EX: when Brian tried to spear fish. he quickly remembered that water refracts light , he learned that
I think when the text stated that, "nothing in nature could be lazy" is that nature doesn't stop working.
ReplyDeleteex. Plants; photosynthesis (make own food)
animals; hunt for food.
If these things didn't exist, nature would barley survive. Its an instinct. They don't have a choice to stop. They cant do what we do. We go into a store and get stuff. But animals and plants have to work for it. If they stop they die.
Mistakes. Through out the novel, Brian keeps saying, "Mistakes". Everybody thinks mistakes are bad. But we can have advantages to those mistakes.
Ex. If he eats poison berries, he gets sick. ( next time he will know not to eat those berries)
He learns. Another example is, when he tried to spear fish, he didn't spear any. So then he remembered that water reflects off of light. Then he quickly fixed his mistakes. ~Kelly Lee
I think when Brian said that he meant that nature (animals and plants) depends completely upon themselves for survival. They get their own nutrition and provide their own shelter. Humans depend on others for food, shelter, and safety. Also nature is active when it does things to survive with what it has in nature so it naturally is always moving. Some examples are when animals hunt for food in nature, when plants use the sunlight for food, etc. If nature is lazy it is basically stopping the whole process of nature and how it works.
ReplyDeleteI think an advantage that mistakes have caused is that you learn from your mistakes and that makes whatever your trying to do easier because you know what not to do again and i think you will have a more likely chance at succeeding the next time you try. Some examples are when he was building the fire if something did not work he would not waste his time trying again to do that. Also when he tried the water for a drink if the water had something in it that made him sick he would not drink that water again and he would find another source of water.
Question1: when Bryan says nothing in the woods is lazy he means everything is constantly moving even at night
ReplyDeleteQuestion2: Bryan actually learns from these mistakes making it harder to die and easier to live.
Rory O'Neill
1. What he means by "nothing in nature is lazy" is that everything is moving and getting food, water and a home to live in. 2. Brian can learn new things from his mistakes or use it to do something else.
ReplyDelete1. I think what Brian meant by nothing in nature is lazy is that everything needs to work in nature to get what it needs there is nothing that does not work for what it gets there for Brian is saying that he is not being lazy.
ReplyDelete2. Mistakes can be positive because you are most likely to learn from them like when ever Brian ate the gut cherries he got sick after if he did not eat them he could ate them when he was already sick and just get more sick there for mistakes can also be positive.
~Malachi Etoniru
1.) When it says "nothing in nature is lazy" Brian means that any animal in the wild takes short cuts to getting something done, like getting a food source. It also means that anything in nature will NOT just sit around and wait for food to come to it.
ReplyDelete2.) An advantage to Brian's "mistakes" is that it makes him think and work harder to keep his food and/or shelter safe and to work harder to stay alive. Also it makes him look for new ways to do things that will help him keep animals out of his shelter and away from his food.
