RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 11, HATCHET, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 11 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 11, Brian is beginning to gain some control of his situation.  However, his body has changed, but more importantly, was the change in his mind--or in the way he was--was becoming. Brian thinks, "I am not the same.  I see, I hear differently".  What does the bold-faced quote from Brian's thoughts mean?  Explain and be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 11, Brian uses an example of figurative language (repetition) when he says, "There are these things to do".  What does Brian mean by this repeated phrase?

46 comments:

  1. 1.He meant by him seeing an hearing differently because he had been seeing and hearing thing that he had never seen or heard before.

2.He means that he has a list of things to do that are essential for him to live until someone can find him.

    1. I like how you said he was hearing things he had never heard before but I think you need more detail, but good response

    2. Good job but I disagree that he is not used to them because he has been in the wild for 6-7 days

  2. 1.I think Brian means his body and hearing are different because his body is used to more food than just berries and eggs. His hearing has changed because he would not just hear the sound but he would know what the sound is.

2.He means that there are things to do because he is by himself and he thought about the bird swooping down and catching the fish so in the meantime he could be trying to make a fishing rod or something to not just be sitting there feeding the fire.

  3. 1) I think Brian is hearing and seeing differently, because I think he is getting more used to hearing all of the forests sounds.

    2) I think when Brian said "These are the things to do" in repetition is when he was telling himself he needed to do these things and not anything else because the sun was going down and it will get dark.

  4. 1. It means that Brian is experiencing things that he had never seen or done before like having to eat a raw egg or build a signal fire or encounter a wild bear and his mind change because he now has to adapt to his new way of life and has many priorates.

2.I think he does this because there's many task at hand that he must do if he wants to continue to live or be found by a rescue helicopter or plane and they are important things so he uses repetion.

    1. I like how you added how Brian might not be used to surviving in the wild because he lives in the city and I also liked how you said how he needs to adapt.

  5. 1. It means that he his now used to the nosies of nature. Also he hears it every day so he would reconize it.

    2. He thinks of what he needs to do like gathwr wood for a fire, gather food like rasberries and to make a signal. So he is thinking of what he needs to do.

    2.

  6. 1. What Brian means is that over the course of him being in the Canadian forest he has developed new abilities such as being able to hear things better and when you're in the forest alone these things can help you because anything could happen at any time so this probably will help him be aware of his surroundings in the forest.

2.I think Brian repeats "there are these things to do" because maybe that is a way of reminding him about things he would want to get done and it will keep him from getting depressed because in this chapter it says that he had been depressed buy it also states that he wasn't depressed as long as he was doing something.

    1. Good job Jaymison! I like how you said for #1 that he was developing new abilities and how anything could happen at anytime

  7. I think that when he hears and sees things differently, he is starting to adapt, or get used to, his surroundings. When he was in the city, all he might have heard were car horns, busy streets, etc. Also when he was in the city he was so used to seeing cars, buildings, people along with other things found in the city. Now, he hears the birds, grasshoppers, trees blowing in the wind, etc. He also see's trees, animals, with other things.

    2. I think that when he says ''These are the things to do'' he means that he needs to do only one thing ate a time so his brain does not get jumbled up. If he does all these things at once, he might forget something that will determine if he lives or not. This also refers back to chapter 5, page 43 where Brian wants to keep it simple. If he does keep it simple and take baby steps, he will get to do everything he needs to do to survive.

When Brian says "I am not the same. I see, I hear differently" he means that when he was in the city he didn't need to be so alert because it want LIKLY something would hurt or happen to him but in the wild he had to be alert or something might attack him or he might miss an important key to survival.

    2. In Chptr. 11, Brian uses an example of figurative language (repetition) when he says, "There are these things to do". What does Brian mean by this repeated phrase?
When Brian says the phrase "There are these things to do" he means that he must get certain things done in order to help his chance of survival such as building a rescue fire (whatever its called).

  9. 1.) When Brian said "I am not the same. I see, I hear differently" he meant that now being in the wild, Canadian Woods, so he had to change a little so he could keep a look out for danger, and he has made some new chooses.

2.) It means that he has lots of things to do in order to survive. Also he is coming up with plans to get attention if someone flies by/over the lake, so he can be found, so he doesn't stay in the woods forever.

  10. 1) What Brian means by "I am not the same. I see, I hear differently". is that he is hearing things that he doesn't really hear a lot of the time because most of the time he lives in the city. By he being alone in the wilderness, his mind is started to pay attention to the details of the things that he heard or saw
    2) .What Brian means by "these are things to do" is he has to stay on task and do the things he has to do if he wants to be rescued. And things that he has to do to survive. For example: He couldn't get depressed/down; his mind to learn and relate to the wilderness; he had to keep a fire going; he had to keep looking for food.

  11. 1. He is from the city so he is not used to being in the wilderness so it changed him slightly.

    2. He tells that there are those things to do.

    1. I like your response like how you said he is not used to being in the wilderness, but i think you could add more detail

    2. I liked your response but what do you mean by he tells that there are those things to do, that's the question not the answer.

    3. I personally think that response could have been a lot more detailed.I think you could have put a lot more effort into that. Here are just some tips that could make your response A LOT better.

  12. #1. The bold-faced quote from Brian's thoughts, ''I'm not the same. I see, hear differently'' means he doesn't really see and hear things but people and cars that make noise. Brian is saying this because he lives in the city and not in the wilderness, he isn't really used to listening and seeing this.

#2. In Chapter 10 when Brian keeps repeating the words ''these are things to do'' Brian means there are more things to do than wait and think about people coming to get him. He has things to worry about like wood to ''feed'' the fire and berries and more. So he doesn't have time to think about those things.

  13. When Brain says "i am not the same. I see, I hear differently" it means that he started to look at nature a different way. When I say this I mean that he finally started to listen and see the beauty in nature and whats been happening around him but just by now realized

    2. When he says"there are these things to do" repetitively it means that the things that he mentions in the text are options of things to do, so he's thinking of things to do.

    1. I like how you said that he starts looking at nature because in the city he doesn't have to care about most things in the wild good job.

  14. I love the way you answered number 1 you made me think about the question differently and you did a great job.

  15. 1 Brian says this because he sees the world differently, and stops ignoring the strange sounds he hears and trays to locate where exactly the sound is coming from. Also he pays more attention to anything strange or abnormal (good or bad) and wants to investigate it deeply.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 2. Brian uses this phrase to highlight any little chore or task that he can do to stop himself from thinking about his mother's affair. These are all things that he must get done when/if someone finds him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1.He is getting used to the wilderness because he's been there long enough so he hears differently and sees differently.

2.He is remembering what he needs to do so he can do them.

    1. For number 1 , if he was so used to the wilderness because he was there for so long wouldn't Brian already be used to the sounds?

Good job for number 2 I think you have the point it just needs more explaining but GOOD JOB.

  18. 1. I think that the phrase in red means that he is getting used to the environment and/or he is getting better reflexes because it says that he is hearing something and right away he is knowing what it is,I think that the part about how he sees is him getting better at knowing what he sees when he sees it so he is getting better reflexes.

2.I think that when he says "these things to do" he is saying that so he can remind him self on what he needs to do or its motivating him. So he says it to know what he needs to do.

  19. 1. He now notices things that are small and things he normally wouldn't pay attention to. Since he has had some strange dangerous encounters he looks and listens closely because he never knows when there could be danger.
    2. Brian means that he has to do so many things that are important for his survival like making a spear, building a fire, getting wood, and feeding the fire because if he doesn't do all those things he could end up dead.

  20. 1.when it said "I am not the same. I see, I hear differently" i think it meant that Brian was seeing things he's never saw before and he is just now realizing that and that he's never heard the new sounds of the wilderness.

    2. Brian was trying to keep "these things to do" in his mind because in the text it said that Brian said that if he forgot about the rescue team trying to find him (if they are) then he would not have the signal fire or the fire lit stick and completely blow his chances of being found because without the signal fire he wouldn't be seen by the rescue team.

    1. Dear William, I like your response to number 2. I especially liked how you put that the rescuers might not come at all because it is possible that no one will ever come for him.

  21. 1. What Brian means by stating in his mind that he sees and hears differently is that, instead of just hearing or seeing something, he thinks about what it is, what it is doing and why. For example, when Brian sees a bush, he sees all parts of it. He would think about the shape and size of the bush and the colors of it's leaves.

    2. What Brian means by "there are these things to do" is that he needs to keep reminding himself that he has to stay busy in order to avoid being depressed by the fact that no one has come to rescue him yet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. I think that when he says he hears and sees things differently now means that he now has a different perspective of nature now. Like he was used to the noise of the city(ex. cars, trains, sound of people, loud noises) not the sounds of nature(ex. birds singing, the fire, the lake, silence) so he hears things he is not used to hearing thing very different from were he is from.

    2. I think when he kept repeating "things to do" it means that he has a lot of things to do to help him survive in the woods. I think he keeps repeating it because he is trying to make metal notes to remember to do things to help him survive. It also might means that he means that he has to not give up, to keep moving because there are still things he needs to get done like make a bonfire to help him people to find him, make a spear to catch fish etc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. I think what he meant when he said, "I am not the same, I see, hear differently", was that he didn't hear the same noises he was used to hearing in the city, (cars, construction, people, etc.). Also he is not seeing any buildings or anything like cars, people, etc. Now that he is in the wilderness he has a different perspective of his surroundings. He is getting used hearing less noise and more of "nature". Also he isn't surrounded by people.

    2. I think when Brian had said, "things to do" over and over again, he meant that he had a mental list of things to do for the next few days or weeks until he gets found. These things will help him to survive. He also is taking Perpich's advice to persevere. ~Kelly Lee

  24. What he means is that the more time he spends in the woods, the more his instincts get better and better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. He wants keep his mind off the bad things by distracting himself with more work.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. When Brian said he has changed he means that he is not how he used to be because now when he sees something he notices more and how it may benefit him.
    2. Brian means that there are many things to do because he needs to set up the fire to see if anyone can find him and when he sleeps he needs to be sleeping a little and waking up again so he can keep the fire going and Brian doesn't want to waste any time because their are many things Brian needs to do
