HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 13 OF HATCHET:
1. In Chptr. 13, Brian realizes he is not the same. The potential "rescue" plane flying over has changed him. One of the new things was that "he would not die, he would not let death in again". What do you think Brian means by the quoted statement above. Explain and be specific.
2. At the end of the chapter, Brian talks about "hope". Not hope that he would be rescued--that was gone. But he had hope in his knowledge. Brian says, "I am full of tough hope". What does Brian mean when he says he is full of "tough hope"? Explain.
1. I think he means he will not death get to him or get in his head because that would put away all the hard work he has done by himself in the woods. The sentence "he would not let death in" means that he would not death get to his head. If he stops, he is going to die.
ReplyDelete2. Brian is being persistent [ JOHN] because he is believing in himself that he is full of tough hope that he can do anything and he will not quit.
I like your reasoning for why he wont let death get to him.
DeleteI like in your q. 1 how you sayed he wouldn't let the thought of death get to his head because if he stops he might die.
DeleteI also like in your question 2 how you mentioned how he is "not a quitter" (Camryn) because he will do anything it takes.
1. I think that when Brian says he will not let death get to him, he means that he does not want to think about dying because that gives him an even more chance of dying. If he dies, not only he will not get rescued, he will make many people sad like his friends and family. Also when he says he will not let death in again, he wanted to die and cut himself, and by saying that, he means he will not let it happen again.
ReplyDelete2. When Brian says he is full of ''tough hope'' I think he is saying that he has hope he will not die, hope that he will get through anything in his path, hope that is stronger than fear. He has hope that he will live and he has hope that he is old enough to be alone and that no one is here to help him so he has to be tough and carry on or he will die.
Good job, Rose I like how you said that hope is stronger than fear because that is a true statement. If you have hope you won't have fear of things that may come, you have hope that you will survive and be okay.
DeleteThanks Gabrielle
DeleteRose I loved the way you inferred what would happen if Brian died I question 1 by saying how people would come looking for him.
Delete1) I think Brian means that he can't let death in his head or try to kill himself again because he knows that no one may come for him but he needs to keep trying to survive.
ReplyDelete2) I think when Brian said that when he was full of "tough hope" it meant that he still had little hope of someone coming for him but he still needed to try and survive.
1.) I think it means that he will not let something like a search plane bring him down and want to die. Also he may mean that he wont just "let" himself die, he would fight any attacking animal/creature.
ReplyDelete2.) I think it means that Brian has hope in himself and he knows that if he is not tough enough to have hope, then he may die. Also he knows it is important to have hope or he may forget things. So he thinks he is full or "tough hope".
Brian means that he will not let himself break down again, not let himself lose the will to live. He will persevere, he will stay strong and he will remember, death is never an option.
ReplyDeleteBrian means that his hope is strong and sturdy and it will never falter, or fall apart under the the hardest of challenges, the scariest of fears, the most disappointing of fails. Nothing will destroy this hope, this tough, unbreakable ray of hope.
I forgot to put a space between Q1 and Q2.
DeleteYou did a GREAT JOB you explained everything and I L0VED how you said death is never an option because you don't choose when to die it just happens. ^__^
DeleteI like how you said "unbreakable ray of hope" and "death is never an option"
Deletebecause you die of old age but you could commit suicide which is another way.
1.)I say that Brian can't let death because the searchers already left him so he needs to keep trying to survive.
ReplyDelete2.)Brian said he had ''tough hope'' beacause he had new hope to just survive so he can have a long nice and good life in the wilderness because the searchers had already left his location so they won't come for him now.
I like your response, but in 1 I think you could have added a little more detail about the concept and dig deeper into the question.
DeleteI like how you said he had new hope.
Delete1. In Chptr. 13, Brian realizes he is not the same. The potential "rescue" plane flying over has changed him. One of the new things was that "he would not die, he would not let death in again". What do you think Brian means by the quoted statement above. Explain and be specific.
ReplyDeleteI think in chapter 13 when Brian sayed "I will not die, he would not let death in again" that he meant when he was "the old Brian" he got depressed and wanted to die and hurt himself; I think he means he wasn't going to let himself feel that way again or let it get in his head because if its in his head it might happen.
2. At the end of the chapter, Brian talks about "hope". Not hope that he would be rescued--that was gone. But he had hope in his knowledge. Brian says, "I am full of tough hope". What does Brian mean when he says he is full of "tough hope"? Explain.
I think when Brian says "I am full of tough hope" he means he has lost hope in his chance of being rescued but now has hope that he will survive. I think this because he starts thinking of hope after he caught a fish, so maybe he thinks he can make it.
I liked that you said Brian is using the fish.
Delete1. When Brian says "he would not die, he would not let death in again" he means that he would first of not try to kill himself again. Second, he means that he would not let himself die by the wilderness. What I mean by that is that he would not purposely mean to die and would fight for his life. He would not die.
ReplyDelete2. When Brian says "I am full of tough hope" it means that the hope is hard to get. When I say this I mean that he has hope in something but it is not the hope you would imagine. It is that he would survive, so the hope is hard to understand if it's not happening to you.
1) What Brian means by" he would not die, he will not death get to him" is he can't let the idea of dying get into his head. It also means if he stops working he will die. He wanted to die in the night. In the morning he "changed and now he doesn't want to die. Now he is thinking positive and he is now not the same. He doesn't want to go back to his old self that cut himself and wants to die. He will continue to work to survive.
ReplyDelete2) What Brian means by " I am full of tough hope" is that now he can make stuff to kill things for food. Also now he doesn't have to worry about dying because he has a different kind of food. He gained this hope by making the bow and arrow and then catching the fish. He feels tough now because he know how to use his resources.
I like where you are going in your second question but you could add more details about tough hope because like tough love you start on the inside and move on to the outside.
Delete#1. I think ''he will not die, he will not let in death him again'' means that Brain will not get frustrated, furious and that he will keep working to survive and not let death in again means he wont just stop and cry but that he will keep working till they come get him out of the wilderness.
ReplyDelete#2. When Brian says ''I am full of tough hope'' means he has hope that is tough and will stay with him and since he figured out how to get fish he has new food source, water, shelter and wood he can survive for a long time.
1. I think "he will not die" means he will not get angry and stressed and he won't give up and I think "he will not let in death again" means he won't be sad or worry about getting out of the Canadian wilderness.
ReplyDelete2. I think he means he has lots of hope for things like more food, water, bigger shelter and wood so he can keep his fire going. Those hopes are "stuck" to him and those hopes he has now are from his knowledge.
Good job but for #1 wouldn't Brian still get sad about never leaving? And even if he does he wont try to kill himself anyways.
Delete1.I think he meant he won't let death into him again , meaning that he won't get angry or won't to kill himself because the plane flew over.
ReplyDelete2.Brian mean though hope by not hoping that he would get rescue but he though about it again and again.
I think Q1 was an ok answer, but add more details supporting what you have. But for Q2 I personally don't think that is all to the answer. It just isn't his hope for being rescued. ~Kelly Lee
Delete1. Brian tried to kill himself with the hatchet earlier but that didnt work and it was almost like death walked into his ear tolt him to kill himself and end his misery and then walked back right out of him. Thenit was almost like he said that he would not let death walk in again.
ReplyDelete2.Brian meant that he has a hope in him a hope that will stay in him , and when he said that hope was tough he meant that the hope wouldn't leave him ; it couldn't break.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Will Jackson~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Will, after Brian tried to kill himself with the hatchet was not the exact moment when Brian decided to live but I liked how you personified "death".
Deletegreat response will but number 1 doesn't make sense to me.
Delete1. What I think Brian means by he will not let death in his head again and that he will not intentionally hurt himself and will never give up when in a tough situation.
ReplyDelete2.What Brian means by tough hope is that he has hope even when things get tough and difficult because in the situation that he is in anything that comes easy he doesn't have to work to figure out but when something comes hard his only choice is to sit down hoping and thinking about how he will figure it out so I think it means he has hope in the tough times when he has to put his brain to the test.
I meant to put is after the in, in #1
DeleteI think Brian means that he will not wish for death again because he now has a chance for survival.
ReplyDeleteI think Brian means that he is full of hope and he will not give up and he keep pushing himself.
Tyler Wood
What Brian means is that after he almost escaped he decided to totally forget about the near escape and just try to not die in the woods.
ReplyDeleteHe means that he didn't care if they came or not because he means that he always believes in himself but he doesn't want to put to much faith in himself because he may fail and could hurt himself because he would put to much pressure in himself that he would have very high hopes and if he fails, he might punish himself for failing.
ReplyDelete1.When Brian says that he will not die or let death in again he means that he will try to stay alive even if nobody came for him.
ReplyDelete2. When Brian says he is full of tough hope he means that he's still going to believe thier is hope even when it seems like thier is none so its going to be tough for Brian
1. In Chptr. 13, Brian realizes he is not the same. The potential "rescue" plane flying over has changed him. One of the new things was that "he would not die, he would not let death in again". What do you think Brian means by the quoted statement above. Explain and be specific.
ReplyDelete2. At the end of the chapter, Brian talks about "hope". Not hope that he would be rescued--that was gone. But he had hope in his knowledge. Brian says, "I am full of tough hope". What does Brian mean when he says he is full of "tough hope"? Explain.
1. What Brian means by " he would not die, he would not let death in again" is that he was never going to want to die again. He changed when the airplane passed over him and would never be so weak as to want death, because now he felt new. At first, he was hopeless and welcoming death because he was sure that he was never going to get rescued. Now that Brian knows he is not going to get rescued he decided to just stop worrying about it and instead just make sure he was going to stay alive.
2. What Brian means by saying that " he is full of tough hope" is that he has a hope that he is going to stay alive. He now believes that he can learn to survive and take care of himself.
In number 1 what I meant to say was that when the plane passed over it eventually made him new, it did not happen right away.
Delete1. Brian means he would not let the idea of death get into his head again and is trying to think about the positive instead of negative.
ReplyDelete2. He means that he has lots of hope in himself and he always thinks positive.
1. Although Brian wanted to die he now realizes he can't die and can't let that kind of madness take over again. He is now going to try to not let that happen by making himself a "new Brian" with tough hope.
ReplyDelete2. Brian means that since he is the "new Brian" he could start over and be a strong/tough Brian. He has hope in the new Brian because he now believes in himself.
Hunter Colson
1. What Brian meant by this is, that he wont let the thought of death get in his mind again and "mess" with his mind. He doesn't want it to overthrow him. If he lets this bad idea of death get into his head, he will eventually think about suicide. Now he is trying to "remake'' himself with a new idea and new life.
ReplyDelete2. I think what he meant by "tough" hope is that, he is now physically tough and mentally tough. He is using both ways to build up his hope in everything. But at the same time he is trying to forget the hope he had for someone coming and saving him.~Kelly Lee
Question1:Bryan means he will NEVER think like that again thinking he will kill himself he docent want to go crazy again.
ReplyDeleteQuestion2:Bryan means he will survive he is full of hope that he will live he is almost positive he will live
1. When Brian says he will not let death in again means that he will not let the thought of dying get to him and make him be weak. He also knows that he could have died from the plane crash but he did not and he is not going to let the fact that he could have died get to him and slow him down from getting help being rescued. He could have died from drowning, starving, dehydration, wounds, shock, the bear could eat him, the berries could have poisoned him, etc
ReplyDelete2. When Brian says Brian says he is full of "tough hope" it means that he believes that he believes that he can survive even though when the rescue plane came to help Brian he missed it and he is not going to let that get in the way of him helping himself survive. Like when the rescue plane came and did not see him, he did not give up and let himself die he stayed strong and keep working with his situation. So it could also mean he is not a quitter or he is being persistent.
1. He felt that there was no hope when the plane passed and that killed his old self and made him anew so he doesn't want that to happen again. 2. What he means by tough hope because he may have lost hope of being rescued but he has not given up hope about surviving as long as he can
