HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR HATCHET:
1. What is a survival skill that Brian learns quickly? Give details describing this survival skill.
2. We have discussed the theme of "friendship" and how "fire" has become Brian's friend. Do you think "fire" can also be considered an "enemy" to Brian? Yes or No. Why or Why not? Explain.
1. A survival skill I think he has learned is building a fire because in the process he said he needed some kind of paper so at that point he was thinking outside the box and he kept feeding the fire little twigs so the fire would not go out.
ReplyDelete2. I do think the fire can be an enemy because if the fire got to big it could catch places around him on fire and some of his resources like shelter and trees.
In number 2 I like how you named some of the resources he has. I loved your WHOLE response today.
Delete1. A survival skill that Brian has learned is how to make and keep a fire going even though it took him almost the whole day it still is a short time.
ReplyDelete2. I think the fire could go on to become a enemy because if it got to big it could burn him or it could burn his shelter because most of it is made of wood.
I like how you said it almost took him a whole day to make a fire.
DeleteI like your response to number 1 but I think Brian would know if the fire was to big or not and his problem is the fact that he needs to keep it alive
Delete1. I think one survival skill Brian learned quickly was how to get water. He knows that he needs to stay hydrated or else he may die and right now his best option is the lake water. He knows that when he needs water, he should be careful only to drink the water and do not drink bugs or plants in the water.
ReplyDelete2. I think that The fire could be Brian's enemy because if the fire got big while he was sleeping,it might reach far enough to touch Brian and burn him. It could also go out while Brian is finding food, drinking water, or building the rescue fire.

DeleteOn your question 1 I like the idea of how Brian shouldn't drink any bugs or plant because they might hurt him. I like how you gave the possibility the fire going out in q. 2, but if the fire went out it wouldn't be letting him down, it would be his fault because he left it to long, he might be mad but he could just TRY to make another one. That's like saying if your friend died they would be your enemy, sure you might be mad or upset and you probably would look for an new friend just like Brian could build a new fire.
DeleteI understand what you are saying but most of the money he put in the fire already burned probably and it would be hard to make a new fire without it.
DeleteThe money didn't help all that much remember Brian used birch shavings to start the fire the money just helped it grow, but yes it would still be quite difficult.
DeleteI like how you said that a water source is an important survival thing.

ReplyDelete1. What is a survival skill that Brian learns quickly? Give details describing this survival skill.
ReplyDeleteBrain quickly learns that to keep his fire going he needs to sleep in only sort intervals so the fire doesn't go out when he's sleeping. After Brian wakes up he adds wood or materials to the fire to keep it going. Brian has also leaned that he needs to keep things short and simple so he can remember everything he needs to know, like how he remembers his "home" is near the lake.
2. We have discussed the theme of "friendship" and how "fire" has become Brian's friend. Do you think "fire" can also be considered an "enemy" to Brian? Yes or No. Why or Why not? Explain.
I think the fire could become an enemy. The fire makes Brian spend a lot of his time finding wood when he could be finding food. Brian could roll into the fire and get burnt with no supplies to heal him, Brian also doesn't get to sleep a lot because he needs to "feed" the fire, and the fire could start a forest fire or start to spread too rapidly.
I like the part for number 2 where you said that the fire makes him do work but I still think its incorrect because if he helps the fire the fire helps him.
Delete~Malachi Etoniru
I like what you said in number 2 but number one really isn't a survival skill just sleeping shorter.
Delete1. I think that survival skills Brian found is finding food and how to make sure he has enough; eating in a way that he still has enough for later and how to make fire.
ReplyDelete2. I don't because if the fire causes Brian harm the fire does not know what it is doing also even he if he could friends make mistakes
~ Malachi Etoniru
He first learns how he can't eat to much food and to keep food and to not eat extra food
ReplyDeleteI liked that you said he could not eat to much food. But I think you could give more detail.
DeleteI think it can be an enemy because he could trip and fall into the fire and burn to death.
ReplyDelete1)
ReplyDeleteA survival skill that Brian learned quickly was how to get water. When he crashed, he landed in a lake and later on he realized that his water source was the lake water. Lake water is freshwater so he knew he could drink it, but he was unsure at first because the water looked murky and there were bugs close to shore. So, he walked out on a log towards the middle of the lake and the water was clear. He took a sip and it tasted so good and then he realized that the lake could be his source.
2)
Yes, I think the fire could also become an enemy because if he accidently touched the fire it could burn him and this would be harm to him as an enemy could be. Also, the fire could go out while he is looking for his main resources, food and water. This would leave him in the dark and cold. Lastly the fire could get out of control and could start a forest fire and burn his shelter and food down.
For question #2 you said the fire going out would be a reason why the fire could be an enemy to Brian, but that would not really make the fire an enemy because it would make Brian mad but it would not cause harm towards Brian.=)
Delete1. A survival skill Brian learns is how to keep his fire going so it won't die out.( go out)
ReplyDelete2. I think "fire" could be an enemy to Brian because if it got to big it could burn the resources he already has. Also, he could get burnt when "feeding" the fire, then he couldn't get the things he needed cause his hand hurt so bad
I like how you said it could burn his resources and when you said he could get burnt
Delete1. I think a survival skill he learned is finding food because he was able to find 3 food sources so far.
ReplyDelete2. It could be an enemy because the fire could burn him and even kill him.
1. I don't think that the fire could be an enemy for Brian because the fire helps Brian in so many different ways that the small sacrifices that Brian has to make to keep the fire going will feel like nothing compared to the benefits of having the fire around
ReplyDelete2. A survival skill that Brian learns quickly is that sitting and feeling sorry for yourself doesn't work. He realizes that if you want to get work done you must get up and do it.
The fire does have a lot of advantages but still it could burn him of burn his shelter.
Delete1.one of the survival skills Brian learned was that he can make fire with sparks from the hatchet
ReplyDelete2.the fire can be an enemy because the fire cold catch on to the wood of the shelter and burn it down.
1.One skill he learns fast is that he need to feed the fire(keep it going)
ReplyDelete2.I think the fire can be an enemy because it can burn down his lean-to it can also go out and then he will not have light and protection.
1.) He quickly learned that if he doesn't find a way to keep going back to a shelter he could get lost, so he learned that a shelter is a key role in survival. So he looked around for a shelter and something to help him find his was back.
ReplyDelete2.) I think yes, the fire could be an enemy, because if some sparks or the fire gets on the wood part of his shelter on fire, then he could be put a risk of an animal to walk up to him and hurt him.
1.He learned how to make a fire because he saw the hatchet chip of sparks so he tried it again and sparks came so he kept feeding it paper, dollar bills, twigs, grass and bark. 2.yes because the fire could catch him and the shelter and berries on fire and it could make animals attract to the fire

I disagree with you on #2 because the shelter can not burn down it is sort of a rock.
DeleteI also disagree because of the same thing and it would scare away the animals, not attract them.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteBut I do agree with the "Brian could catch on fire".
Deletei also disagree on #2 because the shelter is rock and rocks cannot catch on fire but you were right about the berries
Delete1.A survival skill Brian learns quickly is knowing that having bunches and bunches of thoughts at the same time is bad because this will lead to him forgetting other things that are essential to surviving.
ReplyDelete2.I think the fire could be an enemy in a way because he has been putting in lots of time trying to keep the fire alive although doing something keeps him from getting depressed all that work can be tiring and if it ever does go out he probably would get more depressed than he was before he had the fire to take care of.
1. A survival skill Brian learns quickly is that feeling sorry for yourself doesn't work. It doesn't work because when you sit somewhere and cry and all you do is cry your not accomplishing anything. All you are doing is wasting your time.
ReplyDelete2. I think the fire could be considered an enemy but most of the time it is considered a friend. It could be considered an enemy because if it got out of control it could burn down Brian's shelter or start a forest fire. The fire could also be considered a friend because it keeps mosquitoes, bears, porcupines and other bad animals away from his shelter. Fire also keeps him warm at night. It could also help him start a smoke signal so he could get rescued.
Hunter Colson
Dear Hunter, I like your answer to question number 2 because you stated that the fire is also Brian's friend and why.
Delete1. A survival skill that Brian quickly learns is to be resourceful. For food, water and warmth Brian used whatever was around him. Some of the resources that Brian used were trees, turtle eggs, berry bushes, and streams.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I think that fire could also be considered an enemy as well as a friend. Fire could catch on Brian or something that he needs to survive and cause a burn or destruction.
#1. The survival skill that Brian learned quickly is ''feeding the fire'' to keep it going, where and how to get food and water, where to find his shelter when he goes gets supplies and to make the fire.
ReplyDelete#2. No, fire can not be an enemy because the fire doesn't have a feeling for Brian and Brian has a feeling for the fire by saying its warm and protects him but if you said yes for the fire being enemies burning down and other things like that wouldn't be the fire's fault it would be Brian's fault if he put something that could be able to burn close to the fire and the shelter could not burn because it is kind of a rock.
Good job Sally I like how you said that the fire didn't have a feeling for Brian but Brian has a feeling for the fire because it keeps him warm and protects him.
Delete1. The "survival skill" would be to feed the fire so he could scare the animals, cook and keep warm.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, fire can be an enemy because if he touches it, it could burn him, making fire an enemy. But fire doesn't have feelings and it isn't alive.
1. I think a survival skill that Brian quickly learns is that you cant feel bad about the situation you have to try to make progress and make the situation your in better and not pout over the situation because you are just wasting valuable time when he could be doing something useful.
ReplyDelete2. I think the fire could be a enemy because an enemy is something that harms or weakens something else and if Brian touches the fire it would burn him causing him to be harmed and it would weaken him by slowing him down from helping himself survive because he is hurt. Also the fire could harm if it sets something else on fire that should not be on fire (wildfire, his clothes, his shelter) so that could harm him, too.
1. I think a survival skill that Brian learned quickly was "feeding the fire" because, he quickly learned that if he didn't keep the fire going, it would die out. He knew to do this by using his knowledge from his dream. But I was reading some other comments, most said building a fire, but i think clearly in the novel that it said it took a large amount of the day to figure out how to make the fire.
ReplyDelete2. I think the fire could be an enemy because, if Brian's clothes were caught, it would burn. Also if his skin was caught, he would burn. Although if the fire spread, it would cause a wild fire. But, since the fire is in a large rock, it might be hard to spread. ~Kelly Lee
1) I think one of the survival skills that Brian quickly learned is that you have to keep "feeding the fire" and sleep in short intervals to keep the fire from going out because if the fire went Brian would have to build it all over again and if the fire went out Brian wouldn't have anything to keep him warm or possibly cook something.
ReplyDelete2) I think the fire could be an enemy because if Brian was to move over while he was sleeping he could burn himself or the fire could go out and Brian would have to start all over and it took him a long time to start the fire.
Question1:I think Bryan learns that feeling sorry for your self gets you nowhere because in chapter10 or 8,9 we talked about feeling sorry for your self gets you nowhere and when your surviving you have to use every day to help you live.
ReplyDeleteQuestion:2:I think fire can be an enemy because it stresses him out when he is sleeping and constantly worring about the fire going out.
1. He learned that he cant feel sorry for yourself because it doesn't do anything. 2. The fire is not an enemy because it keeps Brian warm and it keeps animals away
