    1. I like how you said the fire would protect him and keep him warm

  2. 1. He means worthless paper because right now where he is he can not go buy something or go out to eat because he is pretty much in the middle of no where in Canada. So the paper is more valuable for building the fire than as being money, but if he was still in New York with his mother than he could go buy something.

2.The meaning applies to fire because friends are always right there with you and in this case Brian's fire he made is right there close to him.

  4. 1. What I think he means by ''worthless paper'' is that their are no stores or anything to buy with the twenty dollars. Since there are no stores, he can use the twenty dollar bill as paper for the fire. Plus, if their were any stores he probably stay their for heat and buy food and water

    2. I think what he means that fire is his friend is that friends always help each other (Brian gives the fire sticks to stay lit so the fire gives Brian warmth to live) and they are always right their when you need them (a fire can not move).

    1. I like in your q. 1 you put how there are not any stores to bur anything (OR THAT WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE).
On q. 2 I like how you state the relationship between Brian and the fire.

When Brian says worthless paper he means that money cant get anything in the wilderness, he needs to get everything himself so money is just as worthless as paper.

    2. In Chptr. 9, Brian finds a "friend" that he calls "fire". Think about what it means to be a friend. How does the meaning apply to "fire". Explain and be specific.
In chapter 9 "fire" is Brians "friend" because "fire" will help him (survive) just like a friend would help Brian (fire might save Brian and help him survive just as a friend might do).

  9. 1. In his attempt to build a fire, Brian realizes that he needed something finer, something soft and fine and fluffy to catch the bits of fire. He thought, "Shredded paper would be nice, but he had no paper."Brian, later dug into his pockets and found the twenty-dollar bill in his wallet to use as paper for the fire. "Paper." "Worthless paper out here." Explain what Brian means when he says, "Worthless paper out here".

When Brian says worthless paper out here about his 20 dollar bill he means that there is no need for the 20 dollar bill so he should use it as paper for the fire. It also means that he is out in the woods or nowhere with "nothing". There are no stores in the woods so he has no use for it to spend it so he can just use it to start the fire because he needed a fire for any chance of survival in the woods much more than he needs 20 dollars to spend somewhere that you cant even spend it.

    2. In Chptr. 9, Brian finds a "friend" that he calls "fire". Think about what it means to be a friend. How does the meaning apply to "fire". Explain and be specific.

The meaning of friends applies to the fire because it means that friends are there to help or in this case protect each other. Just like in the book Brian says the fire will guard him by keeping him warm and giving him some light to help protect him from getting hurt by an animal again. Also Brian will be protecting the fire by keeping it going and not letting it dye out.

  10. In his attempt to build a fire, Brian realizes that he needed something finer, something soft and fine and fluffy to catch the bits of fire. He thought, "Shredded paper would be nice, but he had no paper. "Brian later dug in to his pockets and found the twenty-dollar bill in his wallet to use as paper for the fire. "Paper." "Worthless paper out here." Explain what Brian means when he says, "Worthless paper out here".

When Brian says "Worthless paper out here" he means that the money has no value because he is in the middle of the Canadian woods and there is no civilization. There is no where to buy anything with the money so it is useless. The paper does have some value because he can use it to build the fire that can help him survive.

    2. In Chapter 9, Brian finds a "friend" that he calls "fire". Think about what it means to be a friend. How does the meaning apply to "fire". Explain and be specific.

Brian calls the fire a "friend" because it can do several things for him that a friend can do. A friend can protect you, a friend can comfort you and a friend can help you when you need help. Brian feels very alone and the fire gives him comfort with it's light and heat. It makes him feel less alone. The fire also protects him with it's heat and light to keep away wild animals.

  11. To John,
I liked that you said that the "money: has you value in Q1.

  12. 1. What Brian means by worthless paper is that out in the wilderness with no one around there is no way to use money as it is supposed to be, so it is worthless.

    2. A real friend is someone that you can always count on. The meaning applies to fire because you can count on it to keep you warm and to keep dangerous animals away.

    1. I like how you said how a true friend is some one who you can count on and then referenced it to the fire. I think that you could have been mor specific with your answer to number one.

  13. I think that Brian calls the 20 dollars worthless paper because he can't use it to buy anything because there are no stores. In the wilderness you have to work hard and use every resource you have to your best advantage, and right now Brian's best advantage from the 20 dollar bill is to tear it up to make a fire instead of saving it until he is found, which might not happen at all.

a friend is someone or some thing that helps you to feel happier, safer, and sometimes comfortable. This applies to the fire that Brian made because he feels safer when the fire is there because it would scare away any wild animals that may be a lot more aggressive the gentle encounter he had with the bear. Brian feels comfort from the fire because it is warm and it should help fend off most of those early morning mosquitos that annoy him so much every morning. Brian could also use the fire to cook some of the fish in the lake.

    1. Great responce I like the way you described friend.

  14. 1. It means that he cant use it to do something in the wilderness. You cant use it for what its suppoaed to be used for whitch
    makes it worthless.

    2. Friend means a person to keep you company. It applys to fire because he was alone now he has someone to keep him company.

    3. I like your first response but on the second one how does fire exactly keep him company.

  15. 1. I think that when Brian says "worthless paper out here" it means that it can not purchase, or buy anything in the wilderness with that twenty. He can only use resources around him (water, berries, trees, etc) So the twenty is worthless to Brian.

    2. I think Brian calls the fire a "friend" because it protects Brian. A friend is someone who protects them and more. This is how I got problem 2.

  17. 1. I think he means that it won't do anything but just lie there, useless in the wilderness

    2. I think he means that fire will warm him and it can protect him from animals and help
    him cook food he hunts.

    1. I like your reasoning for why he can call it a friend.

  18. 1. I think Brian says that the 20 dollar bill is worthless out here because in the forest there would be no need to use money because there are no stores that he can go shopping in.

    2. I think Brian refers to the fire as a friend because a friend is something or someone that may help you do something or is there when you need it or them although he made the fire it came when he needed it especially since he barely knew how to make a fire in the first place but he figured it out.

  19. 1. He means the twenty dollar bill can buy him stuff at home but in the wilderness there is nowhere to spend the money. So therefore the moneys best use is to help start a fire.

    2. He calls the fire his friend because now that he has it if any animals come for him at night he will be able to see them and they probably will stay out of his shelter because they don't want to get burned or set on fire. He thinks of the fire as his friend because friends normally protect each other and that is what Brian thinks the fire is doing.

  20. #1. What Brian means by ''worthless paper out here'' means first of all you can't buy anything in the woods and it would not burn when the sparks flew.

#2. Brian also calls the fire his ''friend'' because the fire is there and a friend is there when you need them and the fire also cannot go anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1.) He said "worthless paper out here" because the 20 dollar bill would buy/get him nothing in the woods, and American money has no value in Canada, and later on in the book it said that alone the bill would not catch on fire, the sparks only died out.

2.) The fire is helping his, like a friend helps you throw hard times. Also i helps him feel like he is being helped by someone. So he calls it a "friend" called "fire".

  22. Question1: Bryan says worthless paper because 20 dollars won't buy him anything he's in the middle of the forest.
Question2:A friend is someone who is there for you when your sad and when your mad and helps you get through rough times that is describing "fire" because fire is making him warm allowing him to cook or boil water.

  23. Brian said that the 20 dollar bill was worthless because their was nothing he could by in the forest so he could not use it the way he should.

I think that Brian was saying that the fire was his friend because the fire would help him do the thing he needs to do like cook. He can cook with fire. It will also protect him so he called it his friend.
