RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 16, HATCHET, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 16 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 16, Brian had been attacked by a moose and hit by a tornado.  Just like that...everything changed.  Brian thinks, "A flip of some giant coin and he was the loser".

But, Brian thinks, "There is a difference now--there really is a difference.  I might be hit, but I'm not done".  What do you think Brian means by the red, bold printed quote.  Be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 16, Brian "tests" nature.  He thinks, "Come on--is that the best you can do?  Is that the only thing you can hit me with--a moose and a tornado?"  It was at this point that Brian realized he had a job to do.  However, there was a difference now.  Brian had changed, and he was tough.  Brian thinks, "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head".  Explain what the final quote (in bold print) means.

  1. 1. I think it means he is not done giving up because he has gone to far to stop now he has experienced new things and has learned to much to stop doing stuff to survive because if he quit he would die. There is a difference because he has grown stronger in the woods and figured out how to help him survive, for an example he was waiting for the right time to kill the fool bird with his bow.~ Camryn

    2. I like how you mention that Brian is persistant and he wont stop trying because if he stops trying he will fail.

    3. Sorry guys I just did question 2 as a separate answer

  2. It means that he will not quit he will not stop he will keep moving toward and nothing will stop him from doing it.

It means that he is strong in his mind which means that he is not going to stop just because something bad happen he is a go geter.

    3. Good one Tyler and i like how you explained how he was not out of the fight

  3. 1. I think what Brian means is that he might have been hurt by all the things that he has lost but he has not lost his hope. He has grown so much in the wilderness that if he was in the city and all his things were lost, it would feel bad like it was the end of the world because there was nothing else to worry about but out in the wilderness he has to worry about everything to do in order to survive. He has to keep going on and not back down to survive.

2.I think when Brian says he is ''tough in the head where it really counts'' he means that his mind has so much knowledge to help him live out in the wild. if he was tough like he could beat someone up, that would be absolutely no use to him because there is no one to beat up. Also, you would not want to beat someone who could help you in your survival situation. It only really counts in your head so you know what to do if something bad just pops up and you have to act quickly or else something bad will happen. If you are tough on the outside, you would not know what to do. If one bad thing happens, it can lead to another problem and so on.

  4. 1. In Chptr. 16, Brian had been attacked by a moose and hit by a tornado. Just like that...everything changed. Brian thinks, "A flip of some giant coin and he was the loser".

But, Brian thinks, "There is a difference now--there is really is a difference. I might be hit, but I'm not done". What do you think Brian means by the red, bold printed quote. Be specific.

Brian meant by the sentence in red is that he does not have anything that he has made but now he already knows how to make it he does not really need to start all over, he is realizing how much he has changed since he got there.

Brian means that if he were not mentally tough then it would not really matter because you can be tough physically but not mentally and still not be able to stay calm or he would just give up even though he might not be hurt.

  5. 1. I think Brian means that when he was hit by the tornado he lost his shelter, tools and food but he will work hard and try to get it back even though he has nothing now.

    2. In the quote "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head" I think that it means that Brian is ready to face what he might have to face to get his shelter, tools and food back.

    2. I think you should put more detail into your response but I like it :)

  6. 1. I think that means that he knows now what to do to help him survive like build a fire, make a bow and spear, make a shelter, catch food(hunt), etc. It could also mean that he has come so far and cant just stop trying to survive, he needs to help himself redo his life in the woods again to stay alive because if he does not help himself redo what has already been done again that would be letting the thought of death in his mind again and death would get to him and it could even happen this time. He is not giving up on himself and surviving in the woods because he knows he might not get rescued so he has to make the best of what he has and all he has now is his hatchet which it was he had in the beginning again when he had crashed the plane a while ago.

    2. I think that means that he thinks tough so it helps him survive tough and not letting anything like the moose and tornado get in his way of surviving. Before he was just sitting there not making much progress but now he is asking for more to try to make him stop him from surviving and help himself to be rescued .He is mentally tough now but he was not before when he crashed the plane and was not prepared and ready to survive and crash in the middle of the Canadian woods.~Cami Adams

    1. Good job, I like how you said he is not letting anything like the moose or tornado get in his way of surviving in question 2

  7. 1.)I think that when Brian said that ''I might be hit, but I am not done'' it means that he has been hit painfully, but he is not done from fighting to survive. He says all death has is a moose and a tornado. It doesn't have him.

2.)I think what Brian means by saying ''I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head'' is that he is tough in the head because his brain is one of the strongest and most important things in his body, capable of thinking of solutions to problems. What he means by his head is tough is that the ideas in the brain help him find ways to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1.I think he means he was effected by the tornado and he lost almost everything but his hatchet but he still knows how to make a fire, bow, arrows and a spear. That means he has learned about nature and it's inhabitants. (ex. bears, wolves, foolbirds, etc.)

    2. I think he means that he thinks he's tough and can make (tools), or rebuild (shelter) things that are tough to make and rebuild like the fire, spear, shelter, bow and arrows.
Plus, he is tough in knowledge and he is also tough in his thinking because he's been out there for over a month now.

    1. good job but for num. 1 arrows and tools werent really hard for him to make because all he had to do was to *whittle* them with his hatchet

*whittle*=carve (wood) into an object by repeatedly cutting small slices from it.

    2. I agree with will but your response was ok but I think you could have given a lot more detail and in number 2 that doesn't really tell you Brian's thinking behind what question 2 was about

  9. #1. "There is a difference now--there really is a difference. I might be hit, but I'm not done" this means that even though Brian is hurt from the moose and hit by the tornado he's not dead so he can still try to survive and he only has a hatchet just like he did before and he had a shelter, bow and arrows, spear, foolbird, fish and raspberries. Brian also will probably be working hard to survive until they come for him because he has ''tough hope.''

#2. "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head'' this means that he can make all the supplies he needs because he knows how to get his supply.

When Brian says "There is a difference now--there really is a difference. I might be hit, but I'm not done" he means that now he is strong and he realizes that whatever happens he will stay confident and try to recover from it.

When Brian says "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head" he means that if something brings him down he wont let it get to his head which means he wont let the bad things put him down, only good things make him happy.

  11. 1.What he means by he's hit but he's not done is that the moose might have hurt him and the tornado might have destroyed his "home" but he still has his hatchet, bow, parts of his home.

2.He means by though in the head by knowing that there are more things to worries about than a moose coming after you and a tornado hitting your home.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. What Brian meant by " I might be hit but I'm not done " is that even though he had lost everything, such as the fire, his shelter, his weapons and even the bird that he had just caught, he would still not give up like he had when the plane left him.

    2. What Brian means by " I'm tough where it counts, I am tough in the head " is that he is a survivor and he would not allow himself to ever become depressed again, no matter how hard it gets. So, Brian knew he had changed and that he would never give up, to the point where he would even dare nature to give him a bigger challenge, instead of allowing himself to be ruined by the moose and tornado.

  13. 1.) I think it means that he knows that it only means that he need to rebuild the outer part of his shelter, shape a new bow and spear to have a shelter and fighting gear, besides his hatchet, and his hatchet can help form those items. Also he knows how to trap fish and to grab fish, so he can get some sort of food, as well as some berries, so he has something left.

2.) I think it means that not only is he now tough, but he fells strong, tough and smart, because he knows how to make what he needs and how to solve his own problems, like what when he needs food he hunts for it.

  14. Brian says this because he wants to reinforce the fact that even though he lost everything he had he is still there, still strong, still surviving after almost everything nature can throw at him.

Brian means that he won't let tough times and hard work break his spirit, he will keep working with no giving up or leaving things halfway done, he is strong, and tough in the head.

  15. 1. when Brian said "I might be hit, but I'm not done" this means that he is injured or mentally hurt but hes not finished , hes not dead . Although it seems everything is gone he still has resources berries foolbirds rabbits food water and shelter . This is just like he started "nothing". But now there is something more he knows now how to do things he knows how to react when he sees a bear he knows now how to catch fish , that water refracts , all of this he did not know at first .

2.Brian is tough he is a new Brian , An even newer Brian from the moose and tornado but he has hope tough hope and tough thinking and tough reactions he is smart with this.

  18. 1. He means that he will not give up. Although he is badly injured and lost all the tools he had made and his food, he is not a quitter and he is still alive. As long as Brian is alive, he will never give up on surviving, no matter what happens to him or his belongings. Anything nature will throw against him, he will just take it in and go on.

    2. He means that he can use his head to make tools, to hunt and to just think. His head is full of hope, he hopes that someday he will be rescued, he hopes that someday he will see his parents again and he hopes that he will survive and not die in the wilderness.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1) What Brian means by "There is a difference--really a difference. I might be hit but I am not done." is that he might be hurt but he can still do the things he needs to survive. Brian was hurt by the moose attack and the tornado destroyed his shelter and knocked him down, but now he knew things he needed to get things done. 47 days ago, he couldn't hunt, find water, build shelter or make a fire. He now knows how to do these things and he can start over. " I still have the hatchet and that's all I had in the first place, was his thought.
    2) What Bran means by " I am tough now, tough in the head" is that he knows things now, his knowledge is much better. He knows a lot of things in his head of what he needs to do. He knows things that he needs to do to survive. He knows a plan now. Before, he didn't feel tough, he felt very alone and he had no idea what to do in this kind of situation. Now he feels more confident.

  20. 1. I think that when Brian says "there is a difference now--there really is a difference. I might be hit, but I'm not done" it means that a difference has come, and he lost everything he had needed to survive, but he is not going to try to stop surviving. He is going to try to get things back to the way they were before the tornado and the moose events had occurred. This is what I think the statement means.

    2. I think that when Brian thinks, "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head" it means that he is smart and he was "testing" nature because he was thinking is that all you can bring, I can take more because I am smart, different and tough.

  21. 1. Brian is not done because he has learned to survive. When Brian crashed in the plane all he had was a hatchet and now he has a hatchet and the knowledge and experience of being in survival situations. He already knows some about the wilderness because his plane crashed before and he was left alone to learn to survive.
    2. Brian thought "I'm tough where it counts--I'm tough in the head" means that if he was not tough in the head he might have already given up on himself. If he had been tough in his body and not in his head he might have already given up on himself and died.

  22. 1. I think what Brian meant was, that even if his tools, food etc. were gone, he wasn't done fighting nature in this battle. He went through the steps on how to build his tools, make his shelter also how to hunt food. All he needs to do is redo those steps, act like the plane re-crashed. He needs to ''rewind" to 47 days ago.

    2. I think what Brian meant when he said, "I'm tough where it counts--tough in the head" was that he was now smarter, he has a new "brain". He now is stronger, not as much as physically stronger, but he now is smarter about nature. ~Kelly Lee

  23. I forgot to do number 2 on my first response.
    2. I think it means that now he has grown stronger and stronger as days go bye he is learning more and more skills and experiencing how to do them, so now he is way stronger in the wild than he uses to be

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. What I think Brian means by the thought is that although something that could make anyone give up has happened he will push on. Brian has gone through a tornado that has ruined lots of his work but he will rebuild and not give up.

2.when Brian thinks "I am tough when it counts --I'm tough in the head" is that if you aren't tough in your head you can't be tough when it comes to pushing on or when it comes to having the mentality that you can't give up or im gonna keep moving forward to a better future In the wilderness.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. I think that Brian meant that he wasnt dead or done and he did it before so he can do it again so he thinks that he can do what he did after the crash again. He was hurt then he is hurt now he had no food then he has no food now he was bitten and hurt by the mosquitoes then he is hurt and bitten by the mosquitoes now.

    2. The quote means that Brian is mealy strong which means that when things don't go his way he doesn't be sad and mopey he gets up and tries again harder. He doesn't give up he will keep on fighting till he gets it right.

  26. Bryan means that he is not going down without a fight when the moose hurt him he never gave up and he survived then when the tornado hit it made him feel like he lost everything but the new Bryan wouldn't let that happen and he found his bow string and has his hatchet so he never will give up till he is dead.

The quote means that he is now not only physical strong but mentally too he now thinks like a native american quick fast strong and hes now thinking smarter and better.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. What Brian means by that is that even though his shelter, food, and hunting materials are gone he is still alive so he is not out of the fight. 2. He is not really tough in the head but he know has the knowledge on how to make a shelter, store food and how to make materials
