RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 15, HATCHET, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 15 OF HATCHET:

1.   In Chptr. 15, Brian thinks about "patience"; so much of what he was doing was patience--waiting and thinking and doing things right.  He then continues his thought process, "So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking."  Explain Brian's latter thought.

2.  At the end of the Chptr., Brian thinks, "Never.  Never in all the food, all the hamburgers and malts, all the fries or meals at home, never in all the candy or pies or cakes, etc. ...never had he tasted something as fine as that first bite...First Meat...Foolbird.  Explain why Brian feels the way he does about his "First Meat".  What makes "First Meat" so special?

  1. 1. I think Brian meant that it took a lot of patience and time for him to cook the foul bird and also Brian had to a lot of thinking to try to do things the right way and to keep
it simple so he wouldn't overthink things.

    2. I think Brian feels that the First Meat was so good and like the best thing he'd ever had because it had been so long since he had meat, that is also why the meat was so special because he hadn't had good meat in a long time.

  2. 1. It means in the wild you have to wait for things and think what your going to do next and where Brian lives in the city with his mom he doesn't have to wait and think for something to happen he can just ask or go out and find it, but in Brian's case he has to wait for something to happen and think of what he is going to do next.

    2. I think the first meat is special because he has been eating berries, and eggs for a while and at home he is used to having meat for protein so I think it is exciting for him to have meat that he hasn't had in a while and it might remind him of a juicy burger. ~ Camryn Harvey

  3. W. It means that in the wilderness there is all this spare time because you can't go watch TV in the wilderness there is no video games in the wilderness there is no your own room in the wilderness there is just food animals shelter sky air sun.

    2. It is such a big deal because you just made your first kill your first " meat " and you can live happy that you will survive another day.

  4. 1. Brian has to wait like when he caught the foolbird's meat and even though the outside was rich the inside was still raw and he and he still had to be patient and cook it more so you have to be patient for everything.

    2. This is such a big accomplishment for Brian because his first meet is going to be very very very important to him because it's me and he's always been eating berries and he probably got sick of berries and wanted something else with more fuller protein and nutrients not just berries with fruit and a little bit of fish while he didn't have much fish at first but then he got lots of it but he got sick of all the grease and fish.

  5. #1. "So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking'' this means that Brian has to be patient and think because he needs to wait until the right moment to do something like if he wanted to catch a foolbird then he has to be patient and think what he needs to do so that he can catch it and when.

#2. Brian feels that the ''First Meat'' is special because he now has something other than fish and berries to eat and he use the nutrients and work without getting tired because he has energy he also hasn't had meat that was so good for 2 or 3 weeks because he hasn't been home.

  6. 1.When Brian says ''So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking" he means in life that not everything will just come to you immediately and you have to wait for it. For example: when Brian is cooking the foolbird, he has to be patient and wait in order to eat. If he does not wait, he will be eating raw meat which will not be good for you. If you go into a restaurant, you have to wait for your food to come in order for them to cook it. And with patience comes thinking. If you have to have patience about something, you probably had to think of what your waiting for first.

    2. I think the importance of the ''First meat'' was so important to Brian because he has been living all this time with only the protein of fish and got fruit from berries. Him having a hearty meal will be important in his survival so he can have food to last him a little while and to help him draw more fish in with the leftovers.

  7. 1. Brian’s thinks the latter (So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking.") thought because in life, in order to accomplish certain tasks, like killing a foolbird, you have to look at all parts of the problem. You have to work on finding the foolbird, thinking about how to kill the foolbird and how to cook the foolbird.

    2. The foolbird / first meat is so special because it is the first meat in the wilderness and it tastes better than anything in the wilderness that Brian has eaten. It is the closest thing to food at home.

  8. 1) What Brian means by " So much of all of this, so much of all living was patience and thinking" is that sometimes you have to wait for things to happen. For example, when you go hunting you have to be very quite and have to wait for the animal to come.
Some examples of Brian exercising patience and thinking in the book:
    - when he was roasting the fool bird and he had to put the chicken at the right angle of the fire so it didn't ignite it.
    - when he was trying to fish he had to pull his arrow at the right time, not to fast, or to slow.
    2) Brian thinks " First Meat" is so special because after the first bite he took, now he has meat food ( more protein ) for hopefully for the rest of the time, if he get's rescued soon. It is so special because it is the first real " meat" in a long time. It tasted like the best thing he has ever had. The fool bird reminded him of his mothers chicken.

  9. 1. Brian has good patience, and he shows it as he needs to wait for the best and right moment to catch the bird called the ''fool bird''. He has had time to think about how much of life is spent waiting for the right time.

    2. The "first meat" is so special, because he worked really hard for it on his own, and that means something very special.

  10. 1. In Chptr. 15, Brian thinks about "patience"; so much of what he was doing was patience--waiting and thinking and doing things right. He then continues his thought process, "So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking." Explain Brian's latter thought.

When Brian thinks about "patience" I think he means he must be persistent (like he always is) and he has to wait until a good time to do what he needs to like when he wants to get the fool bird; Brian realizes that he needs to move in at an angel the just try to lunge at it at the right time.

    2. At the end of the Chptr. 15, Brian thinks, "Never".

Brians first meat was so special because its a step forward in survival because he might not always want fish so now he has a better main sorce of food, also there will be more meat in a bird than a small fish. The foolbirds meat might also will be able to be stored.

  11. Brian says that most of this living is patience because he had to wait for things to happen or else there would be a consequence for not waiting. The foolbird, for example, had to be 100% cooked before Brian could eat it, or he will get sick.

Brian enjoys this first meat so much because he was finally satisfying that raging hunger to hunt and search for his own food, he also enjoyed it because he hadn't eaten meat in a very long time so satisfying that need for meat made it taste better.

  12. 1. I think he means that he might do things wrong if he doesn't wait, a little bit like the foolbird not being 100% cooked. Another example is the fish, he has to wait until they come near him so he can shoot them.

    2. He feels so good because he was happy to see he killed the foolbird for meat and not the fish for the first time. It was so special because the foolbirds were so quick so that meant Brian couldn't kill them the first time that he had tried to.

  13. 1.Brian's thoughts mean that he needs to concentrate on things like catching the "foolbird",he concentrated on that by looking at the shape of the bird and then he looked around at the bushes and saw the " foolbirds".

2.The "first meat " ment that Brian had another source of food. So to me,in this circumstances, he might have gained a bit of hope about him living in the wilderness for a while.

    1. For number 1, I dont think its just about the "foolbirds" it is much more than that. Maybe add more details. Also for number 2, you can add more details. ~Kelly Lee

  14. 1.) I think it means that Brian realized that if he doesn't take his time, be patience, then the bird wouldn't cook fully and be raw, and he may get poisoned. Seance he was he got good food as a "reward" to his hard work and time. So he learned that good patience came with a good reward.

2.) What makes his "first meat" so special is that he cached it himself and cooked it all by himself, did it by himself so well that he called it his "first meat" even though he had all ready had fish, he thought of this as his first ever meat out in the wild. Also it tasted nothing like what he had ever eaten.

  15. 1.To me Brian's thought process means that he doesn't get what he wants when he wants it. You have to learn how to wait and be patient. (example; cooking the bird)
When he think's about how you have to think it means that you need to stop and think before you do anything. (example; skunk)

    2. Brian feels the way he does about his "First Meat" because it is the first meat, or protein he has had in a long time because all he has been eating was fish, berries, and some eggs. The thing that make the "First Meat" so special is that he caught his first bird and the bird had meat inside of it so he ate it. The main thing that makes it special is that he actually caught the bird,or meat.

  16. 1. Brian states that a lot of what he was doing was patience and thinking because he had to wait at the right moment to catch food like he had done with catching the fish with the bow and arrow and he had to do thinking like with the fire and creating the bow and arrows.

    2. The "First Meat" was special because he had not eaten meat in quite awhile and as he states it was one of the best foods he had ever eaten.

    1. What Brian means by "so much of all living was patience and thinking" is that in order to be able to do anything you have to be patient and think about it. For example, while Brian was cooking the bird he had to get the feathers off of it, take the insides out, make the fire, find a way to cook it correctly and then he had to wait until the meat was properly cooked. This took a lot more thought and way more patience than when his mother got an already skinned and cleaned bird from the store and cooked it in an oven for him.

    2. The reason why Brian feels the way he does about the first meat was because it had been so long since he had eaten any meat, other than fish, which he was sick of. Even though all the hamburgers, malts, pizza, fries or meals at home were delicious, Brian had not had any real protein other than fish, so a piece of meat would have tasted like the best thing in the world to him. Not only that, he had learned how to make it himself, so that first bite had to have made him proud.

  18. 1. Brian means that in the way he is living most of what he does is wait when he wanted to catch the fish he had to wait till the fish was close, when he wanted to catch the bird he had to wait till the the right time, and when he wanted to make the fire the first time he had to wait untill the fire caught
2.What makes the first bite so good is that he hasnt ate meat in such a long time so he would do anything to get meat again and so now that he finally got meat he thinks that nothing could taste better because he hadnt ate meat in a long time
    - Bisola Fakayode

  19. He means that when he uses his patience, he gets things done and how he is supposed to do it so he does not have to try to do things twice and when he uses his patience he will notice a mistake as soon as he does it so he will not fail or mess something up.

  20. The thing that makes first meat so special is that he has not had meat in a long time so first meat is special for his taste buds and he also got some sort of achievement to him in his mental journal to tell to his father.

    1. Good one Nicholas but remember that he had fish meat (even though that is not much meat its meat) and he was craving for really good meat but sill good one

  21. 1. I think what Brian means is that things in life currently was about patience if he didn't have patience things he needed would never get done because if he isn't patient he would just give up on things that took longer than he anticipated . Such as when he was capturing a bird if he had just given it a specific time that wasn't long enough he would have given up and would not accomplish killing the bird for food.

    2. I think what Brian means by "fist meat" is that in his mind I suppose he wanted "real meat" as in chicken because I think that when Brian thinks meat chicken which is a bird so although he has ample amount of fish he still wants what first comes to his mind when he thinks meat; bird.

    1. In number 2 I meant to say I think when Brian thinks meat the first thing that comes to mind is chicken which is a bird so is the fool bird so although he has ample amount of fish he still wants what first comes to mind when he thinks meat; Bird meat.

  22. 1. I think what Brian meant when he states, " So much of all this, so much of all living is patience and thinking.'' is that life isnt "fast". You wait in the nature, while you get everything almost instantly in the city. He needs patience. if he isnt patient he wont get things done correctly. He is rushing through things. Like if you are just rushing to get assignments done, (reflections) you aren't putting effort and thought into it. He also needs to think carefully. That may be the reason for his mistakes.

2.What I think what Brian means by "first meat" was that it was his first time eating more efficient meat in a long period of time. He kind of thought of the bird as a chicken. He also may be thinking that the fish, isn't a "real meat". Since the plane crash, Brian has only ate fish as meat. But now he has more efficient meat. ~Kelly Lee

    Brian's latter thought.
Bryan's thought process is that everything he's doing is patience like fishing, hunting and cooking all take time and patience but Bryan realizes that and learns patience.

    2. At the end of the Chptr., Brian thinks, "Never. Never in all the food, all the hamburgers and malts, all the fries or meals at home, never in all the candy or pies or cakes, etc. ...never had he tasted something as fine as that first bite...First Meat...Foolbird. The fact that Bryan is so hungry and sick from fish and he just is so proud of himself because he now has another supply of food and he's accomplished both fishing and hunting.

  24. 1. What he mean by that is that somethings you have to be patient and think and some you don't but what Brian is doing he has to focus on his tasks to survive and somethings (like hunting) requires patience because if you do it without thinking you will fail. 2. He hasn't have some good meat in a while and he was craving good meat so that's what makes the first meat so special
