BLOG RESPONSE QUESTION FOR CHPTR. 9, HATCHET, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW IS YOUR RESPONSE QUESTION FOR CHPTR. 9 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 9, Brian worked very hard to get sparks to ignite and to create a fire with his hatchet.  Explain and give details as to how Brian applied the "Scientific Method" to create fire.

  1. The scientific method- Brian needed paper so what he did was he thought about the money his mother gave him and so he shredded up the paper money and put it in to make the fire.

  3. I think that the " scientific method" is the fact that you need oxygen, fuel ,and heat to make fire.

  4. 1. I think that Brian used the scientific method by building a fire because he remembered the money he had which was useless in the wild. He would test the money to use as paper to hope it would help the fire get going. His hypotheses was that you need something thin like paper and money is made from paper, so he thought money would work.

    1. when you referred to the 20 dollar bill that Brian had , i liked that, but he didn't even make fire from that money.

  5. Brian used the scientific method by finding a birch tree and slicing the bark into microscopic slivers to catch the sparks to make fire and used dry grass and small sticks.

    1. I like how you explained the slivers and the type of tree but the bark wasn't quite microscopic but I get what you mean.

TIP: "microscopic" <--- tells reader it isn't REALY microscopic.

    2. ya i see what your talking about just that he said that the bark was as small as a hair and very hard to see but i see where your coming from.

Brian created fire because when he cut down the bark into thin slivers so it would be more "dry" and easy to catch fire. By him getting a fire started could help him have warmth and to cook stuff. Brian also thinks the fire will keep animals away (mosquitos and porky pines). Brian must also "feed the fire"; give it sticks and other flammable things.

    1. Good Job, but I don't get why you talked about animals coming for Brian or Brian feeding the fire. Mr. Zimmerman asked ''how'' Brian used the scientific method not ''why'' he used the scientific method.

  8. In Chapter 9, Brian used the "Scientific Method" to build the fire by:

    1. Observation/Make a guess: Brian looked around for what he had to build a fire.
    2. Hypothesis: Shredding the money/paper would help him build the fire.
3 Make an experiment: He shredded the money/paper got ready to make it into fire.
    4. Test the Hypothesis: He hit sparks into the paper and it didn't take.
    5. Accept or Reject Hypothesis: He rejected the hypothesis.

Brian then formed another hypothesis: Birch bark off the trees would take the sparks.
Experiment: He scraped birch bark off the trees and made a ball the size of a grapefruit.
Testing Hypothesis: He put sparks on those by hitting the rock.
He rejected this hypothesis because the fire did not start.

    Brian then formed another hypothesis.
Hypothesis: Use the same materials but add air.
Experiment: Put all materials in a pile for the fire.
Test Hypothesis: He put sparks on by hitting the rocks and then blew air on the sparks.
He accepted this hypothesis because the fire started.

I think that the ''Scientific Method'' was that Brian used the $20 bill that his mom gave him in case he is hungry and gets lost and the birch bark off the tree he also experimented by first using the $20 bill and then he started to get the birch bark from the tree and then he used the sticks and big wood to ''feed the fire.''

  11. He found materials to make a fire, tore his money apart, he tried to make it (the materials he found and the torn money) burn by striking the hatchet on the rock but it didn't work, so he added wood, then he kept striking and sparks came flying down but nothing happened. Then he tried blowing on the sparks when they were on the pile of things he gathered and it burned. When he saw that it burned he quickly got sticks and threw them on the top of the pile.

  12. I think he used the "Scientific Method" by using something he had (hatchet) and made him have something he needed. He then started thinking and used paper, which was the twenty his mom had given him, and used it to start a fire with hos hatchet and paper. So he is using resources to start a fire.

  13. Brian used the scientific by making an observation, watching other people carry out the experiment and successfully creating a fire. Then he created a hypothesis: striking his hatchet on the rock caused sparks, sparks + shredded paper =fire, or so he thought, unfortunately his first hypothesis didn't work as planned so he made a new hypothesis that added air miraculously it worked ! so Brian's second hypothesis worked and he had fire.

  14. Brian used the scientific method because he used some steps in the scientific method to see if he could make a fire

  16. He used the scientific method because he had to be observant and use natural and man made things to make a fire, making them into steps in a processes. He did shredded bark + paper + sparks + air = fire.

  17. 1. Brian used the scientific method by using his knowledge. He knew that you need something to fuel the embers so when he experimented by breathing on the bark it began to glow and grow. Then finally when he paused to take a breath the bark burst into flames.

  18. He used his hatchet (the back of it) to make sparks and he made a little home for the fire by using sticks that feel like paper.

  19. He blew on it also because he needed to use oxygen.

  20. Brian use the scientific method when he tried many different things that did not work until he made a hypothesis using what he knows to create a fire. He made a hypothesis when he predicted that if he used paper to ignite the fire it would start. He also used the scientific method when he kept trying to find a different way to start the fire which is the last step(seeing if you are correct or not).

  21. Brian used the scientific method by trying many things that didn't work out, and then he decided to make a hypothesis by using what he know from his ''dream'' and from what he knows already. Then he started to experiment with the things he gathered.

    1) rips the twenty dollar bill
    2) made a pile of pieces
    3) hit sparks onto them
    4) didn't work so he tried another experiment
    5) gathered pre peeled bark
    6) went back to shelter then arranged the bark
    7) strikes the he rock for sparks
    8) the he figured out he needed oxygen// he blew

  24. I think Brian used the scientific method when he tried to find something to start the fire. So it was a hypothesis because Brian wasn't sure if ripping up the 20 dollar bill would help him start the fire it was an idea that he predicted.

  25. He thought about using dried leaves for the fire so that was his hypothesis and he tried putting in grass and twigs so those were his procedures and he looked if there would be a fire so that was his analysis and he ended up with conclusions.

  26. 1. Brian used different materials to try to make the fire and found the right material
