HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 12, NUMBER THE STARS:
1. As Mrs. Johansen set out to get the Jewish people to Uncle Henrik's boat, Mrs. Johansen gave the following instructions: "We can't use any kind of light, so follow me...I know the way". "Try not to stumble over the tree roots in the path. Feel carefully with your feet. The path is uneven". Finally, she said, "And be very, very quiet," she added, unnecessarily. Explain Mrs. Johansen's last quote (in bold red print). Be specific. Focus on the italicized word "unnecessarily".
2. After Mrs. Johansen set out with the Jewish people, Annemarie knew that all she could do was wait. "It was harder for the ones who were waiting, Annemarie knew. Less danger, perhaps, but more fear. Explain what Annemarie knew to be true (the bold printed red words). What does she mean? Be specific.
1. I think that Miss Johansson wanted them to be very quiet because she did not want any of the Nazi soldiers to see them or hear them and come to see where they were and why they were escaping and then maybe kill them or take them to a concentration camp. I also think the text says unnecessarily because it might have been another concept of bravery Sosa Rosen's would be brave on the back trail to the boat.
ReplyDelete2. I think Anna Maria means that even if there is less danger you could still have fear because, even though there are no Nazi soldiers around they could be listening but she could still be fearful that they are watching
DeleteMrs Johansen said to be quiet to avoid any exposure to the Nazis. It was unnecessary because the Rosens were the target of the Nazis plan and if they were found out they would, no doubt, be killed. If Mama were found out, however the Nazis might just shoot her arm or leg, but not completely KILL her. The Rosens would be quiet because they have more at steak.
ReplyDeleteAnnemarie's statement means that the people who are in the midst of the danger thinking only to be alive, but they can DO SOMETHING to keep themselves alive. Meanwhile, the people at home feel more anxious and helpless because they can't do anything to keep their loved ones alive.
Good job i like how you said that they can do something. :)
DeleteI like your explanation for unnessary
DeleteGood job I like what you said they can can do something.
DeleteJohn
DeleteThank you all!
Delete1. I think Mrs.Johansen's quote to be very very quiet was unnecessary because everyone would already know to be quiet or els they will be caught and sent to a conservation camp, and possibly tortured.
ReplyDelete2. I think Annemarie meant that when she said the people waiting were safer because all they had to do was wait and not make noises to attract nazis but more fear because they might be scared of the nazis and their long journey ahead of them because if they are caught they could be tortured.
JOHN HIPES
1. I think Mrs. Johansen said it just to remind them that there were still some soldiers out, so you need to be quiet. It was unnecessarily because I'm sure the Rosen's already knew to be as quiet as they could be.
ReplyDelete2. I think she means that there is more danger out in the world then fear. Danger is everywhere, but fear is something you feel.
1. Mrs. Johanson’s last quote is unnecessary because they obviously wouldn’t want to make a lot of noise and act suspicious in a life and death situation so even if she hadn’t said that they would probably be quite anyways.
ReplyDelete2. Even though you’re not in the life or death situation and are in no danger, you are going to have fear for your loved ones, and with the thought that if something were to happen to them you could not be there to stop it. Then if that something were to happen you might not be able to live with yourself.
Hunter Colson
I like your answer to number 2 because you added a lot of detail.
DeleteI think when Mrs. Johansen said "And be very, very quiet," she added, unnecessarily means that it was just a reminder, just to be sure so they could continue with their plan to escape the Jewish people to Sweden. It was unnecessarily because the Jewish people already knew they had to be quite, or they would be caught.
ReplyDelete2. I think Annemarie meant that it was harder for her to wait than to be going with them and know what is happening. Less danger, perhaps, but more fear means that is is less dangerous for her to be waiting, but waiting comes with more fear. There is more fear in waiting because you aren't with the people in the danger and that means you can't know what might happen and your scared.
I like your response for number two.
DeleteI like in #1 how you called it a "reminder"!
Delete-Olivia
1.} I think it means that she was saying to the Jewish people just as a reminder not to say a word./ The unnecessary part is that the Jewish people probably know to be quiet.
ReplyDelete2.} It means that you're in less of a situation to get hurt in but, more fear because of the wait makes it feel more fearful and time seems to go slower than it would normally.
What "And be very, very quiet" means that Mrs. Johansen said to be quiet so they wouldn't get caught. It was unnecessary because the Jewish people already knew to be quiet because the Nazis could be anywhere at night. This had been told to them over and over.
ReplyDelete2) What she meant by "less danger but perhaps more fear" is that it is less danger because your not doing anything to be heard, being quiet. You are staying home and not drawing attention to your self. But more fearful because you don't know what's happening. Annemarie doesn't know if her mom was safe because they had no cellphones or no way to communicate unless she goes up to her mom in person. She would be more fearful because she doesn't know if her mom is captured, killed, etc.
I like your answer for number two.
Delete1.) I think that Annemarie's mom said to be quiet because if the Nazi soilders hear them the Jewish people would have been taken to one of the camps and Annemarie's mom would have been killed by one of the Nazi soilders that find them. Mrs. Johansen may have added unnecessarily because she may have ment that they may already know to be quiet.
ReplyDelete2.) I think that Annemarie met that it would be hard for her to wait for her mother to return from taking the Jewish people to the boat; so they could get to Sweden to escape from the Nazi soilders in Denmark. So waiting for her mother in the dark night was scary to her; while her mom was out on the path to the boat.
ReplyDelete1. Mrs. Johansen's last quote meant that Mrs. Johansen unnecessarily said that everyone had to be quiet so as not to alert the German solders where they were. Even though it was unnecessary to say to be quiet Mrs. Johansen did so anyway because so much was at stake that one little slip up and you are dead. Also when she was so nervous that she was just saying that to just make sure that there was not that one little slip up.
2. After Mrs. Johansen set out with the Jewish people, Annemarie knew that all she could do was wait. "It was harder for the ones who were waiting, Annemarie knew. Less danger, perhaps, but more fear. Explain what Annemarie knew to be true (the bold printed red words). What does she mean? Be specific
2. Annemarie knew that it was harder for those who were waiting because if you are the one doing whatever is dangerous then you at least have something to keep your mind occupied and have a little control 2. After Mrs. Johansen set out with the Jewish people, Annemarie knew that all she could do was wait. "It was harder for the ones who were waiting, Annemarie knew. Less danger, perhaps, but more fear. Explain what Annemarie knew to be true (the bold printed red words). What does she mean? Be specific
2. Annemarie knew it was harder to be the ones waiting because if you are the one doing something then you have some control over the situation and something to keep your mind occupied. Where as if you are the one waiting you have no control over the situation and nothing to keep your mind occupied, so it is harder.
Sorry! Please ignore the first number two.
DeleteO_O that is a lot of explaining GOOD JOB!!!
Delete1) Mrs.Johansen was jhst giving a reminder to be quiet even though it was unnecessary to because the Rosens already knew that they had to be quiet and not draw attention.
ReplyDelete2) I think that Annemarie means that she isn't really in danger because she's staying home but it brings fear because she worries about if the others are okay. Also back then during World War ll people had know way of communicating without physically being with each other or at home with a telephone so Annemarie couldn't find out what was going on.
I love your response because of the detail. Rock on
DeleteEmily Richards
1. I think Mrs.Johansen was saying that to make sure the Jewish people are quiet. If the Nazis heard them then the Jews would be taken to a concentration camp and mama would be killed.
ReplyDelete2.She means that your less in a situation the get hurt or killed, but when your waiting for a parent/guardian to get home and there not home yet,you start to worry and fear that they are in trouble
I think that Mrs. Johnansen meant that she was just giving a reminder to be quiet, so that they blow their cover to the Nazis. I think that it was unnecessary because they already know to not talk/be quiet.
ReplyDeleteI think that what Annemarie means is that the ones who are actually going through the situation are in danger, but the ones who have to wait for them are the ones who have fear for their loved ones/people who are in danger. Emily Richards
I like that you said she was giving a reminder GOOD JOB!!!
Delete1. I think the quote means they don't want to draw any attention to them because they are doing something illegal so if they were caught they would die.
ReplyDelete2 I think she means that you are not in the middle of the plan so you don't know what's happening but you know what could happen and that could scare you.
Good Job! *__*
DeleteNice job especially on question 1.

ReplyDelete1.
#1. Mama said it UNNESESARLY because even though she added it to be quiet, the Jewish people know that if they make any sounds, the Germans would hear them and do something bad.
#2. This means that when you wait there isn't much danger to come, but more fear that you will be caught and die. So they would have 50% living and 50% dying.
1.They were sneaking away to the Inge board. The part that says “unnecessarily” means; obviously. They already knew they were supposed to be quite. There sneaking away! If you’re trying to be sneaky you wouldn’t want to be loud, and draw attention to yourself!
ReplyDelete2. She means it’s hard to be the person waiting because (in Annemarie’s case) you don’t know if they will ever come back. It’s hard to wait with all the different scenarios but, she knows her mother is in danger. Although there is “Less danger, perhaps, but more fear” for Annemarie there is probably more fear for Annemarie, and she is in less danger, than her mother.
-Olivia
1.I think this means that even though they know making any noise could get them caught I think mama says this because she didn't want to take any chances of somebody messing up and stepping somewhere uneven and making noise. Just like when Peter didn't want to take any chances of the baby crying.
ReplyDelete2. She means that although she is waiting in a house that is mostly safe she is scared of what might happen to her mother and Ellen. All she can do is wait and the longer you wait the more negative thoughts can enter your head. She is scared for Ellen and her mother because #1 her mom may get into danger alone which could get her killed and #2 the whole group may get into danger which could get her mom and Ellen and the others killed.
1. I think she said to be quiet because the Nazi soldiers might hear them and would either kill the Rosens or take them to concentration camps and it said unnecessarily because they probably already knew to be quiet.
ReplyDelete2. She means that there would be less danger to the people waiting back in Denmark but it gave them a bigger sense of fear because they didn't know what was going on where the other people were sailing to Sweden.
When it said that she said be very very quiet unnecessarily was saying that she had no reason whatsoever to have to say that because all of her things she said was signaling that they should not bring the attention of the German soilders so noise would alert them as well
ReplyDeleteWhen it says that the people who are out of the action or less in danger but they have more fear means that there are they have no danger because no one know that they're in there or they will not check in there but they have fear that the people who are out in the world will get hurt
ReplyDeleteMrs.johansen know they know to be quiet on the trail but is sayin that too make herself feel better about taking them. She said those words unnecessarily so she wasn't scared.
ReplyDeleteAnnemarie means that the people waiting too go are scared more because of the fact they are going to have too avoid Nazi soliders on the way then hide on a boat for a good 2 hours (estimating) too Sweden without getting caught.
Rory O'Neill
1. It was unnecessary to tell them to be quiet because out of common sense they would already know not to make noise.
ReplyDelete2. Annemarie meant that they were in less danger because they could still escape if the Nazis came. They were in more fear because if it's their turn and the sun came up and if someone sees
them then they would be in danger too.
-Bisola Fakayode
1. What Mrs.Johansen means is that they have to be quiet even though everybody knew that. 2. What Annemarie means is that waiting isn't dangerous but if no one returns then theirs fear.
