RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 6, NUMBER THE STARS, TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 2016

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 6 OF NUMBER THE STARS:

1.  In Chptr. 6, Papa contacts Uncle Henrik and asks, "Is the weather good for fishing?"  Explain what Uncle Henrik means by his question.  Be specific.  Hint:  use context clues before and after the quote above to help you with your answer.

2,  Papa references Ellen as a "carton of cigarettes".  Why do you think Papa would be talking in "code"?

3.  Upon stepping off the train to head to Uncle Henrik's, Mama says the walk to Uncle Henrik's is not far, a little under two miles.  She suggests they take the path through the woods instead of the road even though it is a little longer.  Why do you think Mama makes this suggestion to travel through the woods to Uncle Henrik's house?

  2. I think that papa is speaking in code in case the Nazis are listening. I think that the code really means can my friend Ellen, who is jewish, come and hide at your house?

  3. I think that Mama made this suggestion to protect the girls from dangerous Nazis, especially Ellen. Also it might be more peaceful to go through the woods, away from the hustle and bustle of all the people on the road.

  5. 1. When he says is the weather good for fishing he means if it was a good time to bring Ellen over.
    2. Papa might be speaking in code so if someone over hears what they are saying they wouldn't understand what they are really talking about.
    3. Mama might have wanted to go through the woods because it was safer and it was a pretty place to her.

    1. In Chptr. 6, Papa contacts Uncle Henrik and asks, "Is the weather good for fishing?" Explain what Uncle Henrik means by his question. Be specific. Hint: use context clues before and after the quote above to help you with your answer.

#1."Is the weather good for fishing?" means that since Uncle Henrik is a fisherman he must have asked if he were getting more fish or if it is a good day for visiting.

    2. Papa references Ellen as a "carton of cigarettes". Why do you think Papa would be talking in "code"?

#2. I think that papa refers Ellen as a "carton of cigarettes because its a code that means can I have a Jewish girl in hiding? Papa also says something about not being able to find it but in the right stores and that might mean where the Nazi soldiers don't find Ellen. I also think that they use this code because there could be a soldier any where and they could get killed for trying to hide someone.

#3. I think that mamma wanted to go through the longer way because if one of her friends or relatives see them with a girl that isn't mamma's daughter then while mamma explains there could be a solider and then if mamma lies then her friend or relative might tell the actual truth and mamma could be in BIG TROUBLE!!!!!!!

    1. Dear Sally, I like your response to question number three because you said that meeting a friend who knew the truth would be dangerous.

  7. 1. I think he means “Is it safe for me to send you Ellen,” instead of asking how the weather is for fishing, because he is talking in code.

    2. I think Papa is walking in code because he was just accused by German soldiers and he might be worried that he is being watched or listened to.

    3. The woods are probably safer than the streets, because there are soldiers on the streets and no soldiers in the woods. Veering away from the soldiers is smart, because Ellen is being noticed by people.

  8. I think when Uncle Henrik and Mr.Johanson are talking and Papa ask is the weather good for fishing means if he will be there or not cause if the weather is good he will not be there but if the weather is not good he will be there.

    2. I think Mr.Johanson refers Ellen as a pack of cigarettes in case any soldiers are around and there are plenty in the store means that the others are coming with Ellen to visit him.

    3. I think Mrs.Johanson wants to take the path in the woods to bring back memories and to keep clear of the German soldiers.

  9. 1. I think that when papa asked "Is the weather good for fishing?" I think it was code for "Is it safe for Ellen to come now" because they may never know who might be listening or if someone barged in (such as the Nazi soldiers) and heard them, they would be in BIG trouble.

    2. I think that Papa is speaking in code so he does not get caught saying Ellen's name and risk the chance of being heard especially
    by the Nazi soldiers.

    3. The reason Mama wants to take the woods is because she does not want anyone such as the soldiers to spot Ellen and their are few, if any, soldiers in the woods so the chance of them getting caught is unlikely.

  10. I think the quoted sentence means that they might escape if the weathers good but don't want anyone to overhear or get recorded by the Nazis.

I think that "papa" was talking in code because he didn't want anyone like the Nazis to over hear or even the girls because it might frighten them.

I think "mama" wanted to take the woods rout in case any soldiers are guarding the trail. Also I think he doesn't want ANYONE to see her leaving.

    1) I think when Uncle Henrik asked is the weather good for fishing means is it a good time to bring Ellen.

    2) I think papa is talking in code because german soldiers might listen to phone calls and if he talked about Ellen they would figure out that he and his family were hiding a Jewish person or he didnt want the girls to know what is going on.

    3) I think mama suggests to walk through the woods because there are german soldiers around and they might notice that Ellen has brown hair, which signifies or shows that she is Jewish and they would kill or hurt mama, Annemarie and Kirstie for hiding a Jewish person.

  12. 1. I thing that mr. Johansen was just trying to make small talk so no one would suspect that they are escaping if they overheard it.
    2. I think that dad was talking in code because if anyone overheard they might report to the Natzis and they get punished.
    3. I think they took the route on the woods because 1 it brings back memories for mom and 2 there's probably no soliders in the woods.

  14. I think he asked if the weather was good for fishing because Uncle Hinrik is a fishernan.

2.I think Papa would be talking in code so if the Nazis are listening in on the call. They don't know want the are talking about.

3.She might have noticed Nazis soldiers walking do the street. So she just wanted to be safe about it.

  15. 1) What Mr. Johansen meant by "Is the weather good for fishing" is that they were trying to find a way to get Ellen there. They were using this as a secret way to communicate. By using context clues I understood that. Another example in the story is "she is bringing you a carton of cigarettes". I feel this is inferring that they are going to bring Ellen too.
    2) Papa was speaking in code because he did not want the Nazis to know. They knew the Nazis were hearing and listening to everything.
    3) She wanted to travel thorough the woods because she didn't want the Nazis to see them. Also, it said that that's where she had memories. Like " when she went to school her dog would follow her.

  16. 1. I think that Mr.Johansen meant in a secret code that this "Are there any German Soldiers around your house or on the pathway to your house".

2.Mr.Johansen was speaking in a secret code because the Nazis were EVERYWERE and who knows the Germans might even be stalking and listening to every word that they say and with what recently happened at the Johansen's last night would make ANY officer suspicious.

2.Mrs.Johansen wanted to take the path through the woods mainly because she knew the woodland trail was safe from the Nazis and she didn't want any risk of one even talking to her or the girls. Mrs.Johansen also covered the fact about the Nazis by saying that it was a Beautiful day and they would have so much fun.

  17. 1. I think asked if the weather was good for fishing because he wants to know if i would be a good time to bring Ellen and if he would be gone fishing when they brought her.

    2. Papa was speaking in code because if the Nazis were listing to him him and if he said Ellen they would know he is hiding a Jewish person and then him and the rest of his family would be in trouble.

    3. I think mama makes the suggestion to walk through the woods instead of the road because someone might see them walking with Ellen and suspect something because she has dark hair and it might be more peaceful walking through the woods alone with no cars.

  18. 1. What Mr.Johansen meant by " Is the weather good for fishing" is that they were trying to get Ellen to Uncle Hinriks house.

    2. Papa was talking in a code so that if a soldier was around he wouldn't get caught when he said " Carton of cigarettes". If he said Ellen then he would get caught.

    3. Mama wanted to travel through the woods because since there was a soldier on every corner she didn't want to get in any kind of trouble with the girls

  19. 1. Uncle Henrik is a fisherman so papa asked is the weather good for fishing. 2. Ellen was reffered to as sigs because the Nazis may hear what's going on so he had to say it as a code. 3. There may be soldiers on the road so they should play it safe and go through the woods.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1.I think that Mr.Johansen asked Uncle Henrick "Is the weather good for fishing". He phrased it that way as a way of asking what he really wanted to ask.

2.Ellen was reffered to as cigarettes because, the Nazis could hear the Johansens say something else, then bust in and harm Ellen and the Johansens. So they had to speak in code so they wouldn't hear the Johansens.

3.Mama wanted to take the path in the woods because she didn't want to risk being caught by more Nazi soldiers. So she took the woods route because it was a safer trip.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. I think what Papa meant by his question was, was that he was just making small talk so that if the Nazis were listing in on their conversation it would draw suspicion away from them. The reason why making small talk would draw away suspicion away from them is because is Papa just said, "we are bringing Ellen to you to protect her" the Nazis would instantly know that they were helping a Jewish person escape. Also it is good small talk because Uncle Henrik is a fisherman.

    2. I think Papa would be talking in code because the Nazis might be intercepting telephone lines and could have been listening in on their conversation. If the Nazis were listening and Papa did not use code, they would find out about Ellen and do something terrible to her, like take her to a concentration camp, or even kill her and the Johansens would suffer the same fate.

    3. I think Mama makes the suggestion to travel through the woods to Uncle Henrik's house because going on the road they would be more likely to get caught by Nazis than they would taking the path through the woods. It is a longer way, but safer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. It may mean "Can I send Ellen to you?" or "Do you want company?" and it could also mean "Is the coast clear?" since you sometimes fish at a coast of an ocean and you go fishing in clear conditions.

    2. He might be speaking in code so if the Nazis were to ever intercept their phone call, they wouldn't understand what he was talking about and "carton of cigarettes" could mean "the package" or something like that.

    3. She may have made the suggestion so they aren't seen by the Nazis and captured and sent to a concentration camp or, even worse, extermination camp and if they were caught they might think "Why didn't we go in the woods like Mama said?"

  23. 1. I think that when Papa said "Is the weather good for fishing?" that it meant is it OK to bring Ellen now with Mama and Annemarie. A context clue that i found in the text was on page 53. It says "I'm sending Inge to you today with the children...". Also it talks about having lots of cigarettes when Copenhagen really doesn't. I think he is referring to the kids.
    2. I think that Papa was speaking in "code" in cause Nazis were around and so Annemarie didn't know who he was talking about.
3.I think Mama wanted to take the path through the woods because she didn't want the Nazis to know where they were going with Ellen. Also, I think that that certain path brought back childhood memories like with the school path and the dog. EXAMPLE: She got to see her aunts house and her best friends house when they went the way through the trees

  24. 1.Papa says "Is the weather good for fishing," in quotes because he was talking in code.He was realy asking if they could bring a "friend".

2.Papa is probably talking in code because, after the inspection the soldiers are suspicious and, might be eavesdropping on the conversation. Its just to be cautious.

3.Mama probably travels through the woods to avoid questioning or suspicion. It also brought back memories from her childhood. It was important to keep Ellen safe. They would walk longer to avoid risk.

  25. 1. Papa says this because he is probably talking in code for, "Is it a good time for me to send Ellen over, or are you going fishing?" He does this because Nazi soldiers might be listening.

    2. Papa is also talking in code again, when he says "cigarettes" he really means Ellen. He wants to still talk in code because of course Nazi soldiers are listening everywhere.

    3. Mama travels through the woods probably she saw a Nazi soldier on the
trail. Mama possibly is trying to avoid more suspicion or questions between the soldier and the Johansens. It was important to keep Ellen from soldier and being noticed. ~Kelly Lee
