HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW IS YOUR RESPONSE QUESTION FOR NUMBER THE STARS:
1. As we continue our reading of Number the Stars, the theme of friendship continues to develop. In the novel Hatchet, Brian experienced a form of friendship through his discovery of fire.
(a) Give examples of how the theme of friendship can be seen through the characters in Number the Stars. Cite at least two (2) examples.
(b) Compare and contrast Brian's experience with friendship to that of the characters in Number the Stars.
1. (a) Annemarie is a great friend of Ellen's because they play with each other and when they do they don't fight, or cry and they always are there for each other like good friends. Annemarie also understands what is going on and is sad for Ellen and understands what she is going through.
ReplyDelete1. (b) COMPARE: Brian loved his fire just like a family member and so does Annemarie. Brian would do anything for the fire to keep it going, Annemarie would do anything to keep Ellen safe so Ellen is like the fire to Brian and Annemarie will have to protect Ellen just like Brian had to protect the fire.
CONTRAST:Brian has to protect his fire from extinguishing and not from other people or animals but Annemarie has to protect Ellen from the Nazis which are people.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~WILLIAM~~JACKSON~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love your response especially number one how you said they are always there for each other!!!!!!!
Delete(a) One example is that the Johansen's are letting Ellen stay for a couple of nights so that the soldiers don't come and take her to some type of jail like for example a concentration camp. Another example is Uncle Hinrik is letting Ellen go to his house to get away from the soldiers as well as Mama, Annemarie and Kirsti.
ReplyDelete(b) Compare- Brian, Mama, Papa, Annemarie and Kirsti didn't give up on there friends. Brian was trying hard to keep his fire alive and the Johansen's were trying to keep Ellen free and alive.
Contrast- Brian is trying to keep a fire alive in the middle of the Canadian woods. The Johansen's were trying to keep Ellen away from trouble in Copenhagen,Denmark.
I like your b. how they were keeping each other alive.
DeleteJOHN
A. Anemarie shows friendship to Ellen by letting her live with them and also trying to help Ellen with her neckless. I also think that Anemarie shows friendship by helping Ellen blend in.
ReplyDeleteB. I think Brians friendship was different because his wasn't a person but they both kept each other alive in both novels.
_____________________________JOHN HIPES___________________________
I like that you gave 2 examples.
DeleteI like where you were going on number 2 but you are also supposed compare
Delete1. (A) One extremely good example is Ellen and Annemarie. They always are nice and kind to each other, and stand up for each other. They never fight and they help each other through hard times like Lise dyeing. Another example is how the Johansen family are playing such a big part to keep Ellen safe. They would risk their lives for a little girl which is amazing.
ReplyDelete1. (B) Compare: When Brian had his fire, he treated it like a friend. He fed it (wood), and made sure it didn't burn out. Like Ellen and the Johansens, they both would do anything they could to help their "friend" out.
Contrast: Brian wants the fire to stay alive because he loves it, but if it died, it would not be so bad because he can build another one. On the other hand, If Ellen was to die, you cannot create another friendship like that. It would be more of a tragedy than just a fire burning out.
I LOVE your #1 A. how you said that it was not just Annamarie working to save Ellen how it was the whole Johanson family.
Delete1.A} o e example of the theme of friendship is when Annemarie and Ellen are looking out for each other ex. when Annemarie removes the star of David from her neck when the German soldiers come search the apartment for the Rosens. Another ex. is when they are always nice to one another and share and get along like real sisters would
ReplyDeleteB} compare - Brian's relationship with the fire is like Annemarie's and Ellen's relationship because they each depend on each other to survive in those dark times/ Brian had to feed the fire for it to survive and he needed the warmth/ Ellen needs Annamarie to survive by pretending to be sisters.
B} contrast - Brian relationship with the fire is different than what Annamarie's and Ellen's because Brian's was the one who really controlled every thing but with Annamarie and Ellen they both are trying to work together to make their plan work
Dear Tyler, I like your response because you added a lot of detail.
DeleteGreat job Tyler! I like how in part A you said that Annemarie and Ellen get along just like real sister do which would help improve their plan.
ReplyDeletea) One example is: if a friend needs help you offer to help. From the book: Annemarie helped take off the Star Of David necklace for Ellen so the Nazis wouldn't know she was Jewish.
A second example of friendship is when the Johnansens offered to keep Ellen safe.
b)
Compare: Brian always tried keep the fire safe and Annemarie always tries to keep Ellen safe.
Contrast: Brains friend was a non-living object and was trying to keep it going and Annemarie was trying to keep Ellen safe.
GOOD JOB I LIKED YOUR ANSWERS AND THAT YOU SAID BRIAN'S FRIEND WAS NON-LIVING. SALLY K.
Delete1. The Johansons helped the Rosens by keeping Ellen and the Rosens helped the Johansons by inking and shining Kirsti’s fish shoes.
ReplyDelete2. Brian’s friendship had been with a thing / fire and the friendship in Number the Stars is with actual people.
ReplyDelete1. As we continue our reading of Number the Stars, the theme of friendship continues to develop. In the novel Hatchet, Brian experienced a form of friendship through his discovery of fire.
(a) Give examples of how the theme of friendship can be seen through the characters in Number the Stars. Cite at least two (2) examples.
#1.(a) EX: Annemarie is always helping Ellen staying with her and protecting her Annemarie has helped Ellen get her necklace off before the German soldiers came in because the Star of David is a indicates that Ellen is Jewish.
EX: Annemarie's family has helped Ellen because Ellen is Annemarie's friend and Mrs. Johansen's friend's daughter and they are taking Ellen to safety which is Uncle Henrik's place.
(b) Compare and contrast Brian's experience with friendship to that of the characters in Number the Stars.
COMPARE: Brian is keeping the fire alive, safe and the Johansen family are keeping Ellen safe from the German soldiers. They are the same because Brian is keeping the fire safe while the Johansen family are keeping Ellen safe.
CONTRAST: Brian can make the fire again and again but once Ellen is dead she is dead plus they are just protecting Ellen from Germans who want Jewish and Brian is just keeping the fire alive as in going.
(a) One example of how friendship can be seen through the characters is when Annemarie yanks the Star of David necklace off Ellen so that the German solders did not find out that Ellen is Jewish. Another example is when the Johansens agreed to protect Ellen from the German solders for the Rosens, even if that meant putting their own lives in danger.
ReplyDelete(b) Brian's experience with friendship and the characters in Number the Stars are the same because the fire protected Brian while the Johansens also protected Ellen. Their experiences with friendship were different because Brian's experience was with a thing and the characters from Number the stars were with other people.
a) Annemarie and her family are pretending to be Ellens's family so she won't be taken to a concentration or extermination camp.
ReplyDeleteAlso Annemarie and her family are taking Ellen to safety at uncle Henrik's farm which is near Sweden.
b) Contrast: Brians experience with friendship is that he is friends with the fire and he is keeping the fire going. Annemarie is also helping Ellen survive and not being captured by German soldiers and is keeping her in hiding and claiming her as her sister.
Contrast: Annemarie is helping Ellen really survive and not be killed when Brian is just taking care of a fire not a real human being.
I like how you said Brian was friends with the fire
DeleteA) the theme of friendship is highlighted by the characters in the book, Annemarie and her family are smuggling Ellen to uncle Henrik's house just to keep her alive. And Peter is hiding the Rosens somewhere to keep them safe also. I think that these dangerous act toward the Rosens shows real and true friendship.
ReplyDeleteBrian, like the Johansens felt the need to protect his friend, no matter what. Brian was willing to run the risk of being harmed deep in the woods, just so he could get a little bit of wood to keep his fire going. The Johansens were willing to lie to the Nazi Soldiers in order to protect their friend Ellen. On the other hand they weren't forced to go into the woods to feed Ellen, it was much more intense than that. The Johansens had to tear out their pictures of Lise, make up a secret language, and sneak a girl, from Copenhagen, to the border of Sweeden.
(a) Annemarie and her family are being good friends to Ellen by protecting her from being taken away by the German soldiers.
ReplyDeleteEx. when Annemarie helped take off the Star of David in time before the German soldiers came into their room.
Ex. When the German soldiers didn't believe Ellen was really Mr. and Mrs. Johansens "daughter" Mr. Johansen got the pictures, but he could have just let them take Ellen but he didn't.
(b) Compare: Brian tried to keep his fire alive like the Johansens are trying to keep Ellen alive. Also the fire was Brians friend like Ellen is Annemaries friend they both will protect their friends.
Contrast: With the fire Brian can remake if if he has the things but after Ellen is dead she can't come back to life, but the fire can.
Amazing contrast!
ReplyDeleteA) The friendship of the story is mainly circling around, Annmarie and Ellen. One huge way you can tell there friends is that, Annmarie is risking her family to help Ellen. Ellen trusts Annmarie and her family to,help keep Ellen and her family safe. Ellen also does stuff she doesn't like just for Annemarie. Like racing with her even after she said "You know I cant beat you". But she agrees so she didn't disappoint Annamarie.
ReplyDeleteB)When Brian had the fire (at last) he was with it all the time like Annamarie and Ellen are together all the time. Brian got sad when the fire went out. Like Annamarie was sad when Ellen was in danger and, wanted to help her
-Olivia
There different by, Ellen is a living person who is more important in life. The fire could not play or interest Brain like the power a true friend has. (contrast)
1.
ReplyDeleteA) The theme of friendship in number the stars is the Rosens and the johansens like how the moms meet every day to have "tea" and how they let Ellen stay with them for awhile.
B) Compare. In both friendships one of the people is trying to save the other one Like how Brian was trying to keep the fire going and how the johansens were trying to keep the Rosens alive.
Contrast. In Brian's friendship it was shirt and not with a human the Rosen and johansen friendship it was a long time and with humans.
In a I like your "tea" example because I don't think anyone else thought of that and its out of the box thinking. In b part 1 I like your first example when you say the one person is trying to protect the other person. In b part 2 I'm not exactly sure why you put shirt when it really was the fire.
Deletea) The theme is expressed through the characters in Number The Stars. Some examples would be when Peter took Mr. and Mrs. Rosen to go into hiding so they would't be caught. Another example is that the Mrs.Johanson is taking Ellen to Uncle Henrik's so she doesn't get caught since she is a Jew.
ReplyDeleteb)COMPARE- both Brian and Annemarie will fight to keep their friend alive. In Brian's case the fire, in Annemaries case Ellen. They also both care about their friend and their friend is basically part of their life.
CONTRAST- Annemaries friend is alive. Brians is not alive. Annemaries friend is their for courage and to give them good friendly advice. Brians friend is their to keep him warm and keep animals from eating him.
a. Friendship is demonstrated in how Ellen and Annamarie spend time together, and are always there for each other, as well as their mothers, who also are friends and talk and drink tea together.
ReplyDeleteb. Brian was on his own, and his only relationship was with the fire he built for survival. So, he spent time with the fire, and he depended on it, and the fire depended on him to stay. However, it doesn't give any kind of lasting friendship, the way a real person to person friendship does.
(A)One example of friendship is when Annemarie pulled the Star of David neaklace off Ellen's neck. Another time is when MR.Johansen stepped in front of Ellen to protect her from the soldiers pulling her hair.
ReplyDeleteCOMPARE:I think Brian's experience with friendship is the same as the characters from Number the Stars experience because the people in Denmark are in a bad situation and the only things that are holding them "together", is friends and family. Brian circumstance is almost the same but he does not have a family or any friends to keep him "together". So he relies on the fire to keep him "together" but if the fire goes out he does not have anything to keep him "together".
CONTRAST: I think that Brian does not have friendship for his self because he tried to kill himself .The Danes do have friendship for themselves and faith in theirselves, that is why they were forming sabotage parties so they could try to prevent the Nazis from doing any more damage to the Jewish population.
I liked the way you did your compare and contrast part of your response it had great examples... GREAT JOB
Delete1. a) Annemarie saved Ellen by yanking off her necklace so the Germans couldn't see the Star of David and Mr. Johansen tore off the date of a picture of Lise who had dark hair when she was young and Ellen had dark hair
ReplyDeleteb) Compare: I think Brian's friendship and Annemarie's and Ellen's are close since Brian needs the fire to get through things like cooking food and scaring away things that could hurt him and Annemarie and Ellen need each other to get through the war.
Contrast: Brian was friends with the fire which is non-living (abiotic). Annemarie and Ellen are 2 living things (biotic) and the fire is abiotic because it was made by human hands and Annemarie and Ellen are biotic since they are living (in the book, not in real life).
(A) An example of friendship is when Annamarie and Ellen are playing with the paper dolls, the girls pretend they are at Tivoli gardens which for many years was a place of happiness and joy for all the people of Denmark. Another example is when Annamarie and Ellen are expressing their fellings for Lises death this shows friendship because they are telling each other how they felt about this tragic even which was personal for both of the girls.
ReplyDelete(B)1. The friendship in Number the Stars and Hatchet is alike because the Johansens are keeping Ellen safe by letting her stay in their home and letting her pretend to be part of the family.
(B) 2. the friendships are different because in Number the Stars friendship is expressed through two people where as the friendship in hatchet is expressed through one person and a fire. These friendships are alike in some ways but when it comes down to who the friendship is expressed through its a different story.
Jaymison in part b you could have added more though
DeleteRory O'Neill
In number the stars, I see that Annemarie and Ellen go through things like pretending to be sisters at one point and are alike in many ways such as they are both in the track team and work together when they are in need of help
ReplyDeleteA) An example of friendship is that the Johansens are letting Ellen stay over instead of passing her up and taking the big risk of having her being taken away by the Nazi soldiers. Another example is when Annemarie yanked the necklace off of Ellen because she realized if Ellen had the necklace on, she would be caught.
ReplyDeleteB) compare ) The friendship in Number The Star is alike to hatchet because just like the fire was keeping Brian alive, the Johansens were keeping Ellen alive and away from the Nazis for as long as possible.
contrast ) The two friendships are very similar, but Annemarie and Ellen's friendship is through two humans in a CITY, while Brian's was through a human and a fire while in the WOODS. ~Kelly Lee
I like the examples you used.
DeleteWith Brian,he had to rely on many things and with Annemarie, her friendship was from when she was old enough to have Ellen as a friend but Brian had to in a way adapt to where he was and had to get used to his surroundings and then start his, in a way friendship with where he was and also relys on his friendship to survive just like Annemarie and Ellen because with all of the soilders, they need to rely and trust each other to survive like Brian and the woods.
ReplyDeleteA. The Johansens friendship with the Rosens proved when the roses go into hiding and the johansens keep Ellen.
ReplyDeleteB.in hatchet Brian didn't have people to have friendships with his friends were feelings and inanimate objects.in number the stars friendship is with friends and actuall people.
Rory O'Neill
A.) 2 examples are Ellen and Annemarie's friendship because Annemarie is willing to lie to the soilders so they to not take her away because she is Jewish. The other example is Ellen's mom and Annemarie's mom's friendship, they often had tea together and talked about many things.
ReplyDeleteB. Compare) Brian's version of friendship with the fire is like Ellen and Annemarie because when Brian gave the fire more stuff to burn, it gave Brian light and heat. With Annemarie and Ellen Annemarie gave Ellen a place to hide and in return Ellen gave Annemarie friendly things, like shared toys and secrets with her.
Contrast) Brian's friendship is different because the fire could not go any where with him and i could not talk to him. With Ellen and Annemarie they are able to talk to each other and share toys and hang out and do things like share their favorite foods. `
A. Annemarie and Ellen are good friends because they play together and support each other. B. The friendship in Hatchet is between Brian and the fire because the fire protected him and kept him warm, but in Number The Stars the friendship is between a human (Annemarie) and another human (Ellen).
