HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW IS YOUR RESPONSE QUESTION FOR CHPTR. 7 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
1. In Chptr. 7, Mama tells the girls that she has found enough apples for applesauce. She stated that even though there was no sugar, the apples were sweet. There would be fish for dinner, as well, so they would be well fed.
Annemarie replies, "It is not a bad time, then." "Not if there is applesauce".
Explain what Annemarie means by her response to Mama. Be specific. (Hint: Think about the setting in this particular chapter and how it might relate to the apples/applesauce.)
When Annemarie said " It is not a bad time." " Not if there is applesauce." means that since all the German's are looking for the Jewish people and taking away things like sugar that it can't be that bad to not have apple sauce because there are worse things going on.

"Not if there is applesauce." means that the German soldiers are taking away things in Copenhagen that they like and applesauce is something they haven't taken away yet. Since Uncle Henrik lives on a farm in the country part of Denmark and that's where they are right now it might be easier to find apples to make applesauce.

DeleteWhen Annemarie said "it is not a bad time. Not if there is applesauce" it relates back to the apple tree that was gnarled and had few apples on it, which were long past ripe. The Germans took away things such as sugar, but if the apples are ripe then they would be sweet even without sugar.

"Not if there is applesauce" means that it can't be that bad of a time now because she is at the house and meadows that " were so much of her childhood, a part of her life", where there were apple trees. Things were good back then. This day her mom made applesauce and Uncle Henrik brought fish home and had wood for firewood. They were going to have a fresh meal. She was tying to make this day a really good day. As bad as things were in their life things were good because they had a fresh meal and applesauce.

I think Annemarie means that since sugar was being rashioned the applesauce wouldn't taste good, but now since they're at Uncle Henrik's farm he has sweet apples to make good applesauce that will taste good since the girls haven't had applesauce in a long time.

Delete1.Annemarie means to lift their spirits because the Johansons and Ellen have had a rough couple of days and now they are with Uncle Henrik trying to start over and be happier and applesauce is a food they don’t get a lot of so they are happy when they do get it.

1. What Annemarie means by her response to Mama is that it is not a bad time because they very rarely get any treats at all. Nazis had rationed just about everything, including sugar, so apple sauce becomes a great treat. Annemarie was looking on the bright side, so even though things are not good at all (and poor Ellen has no idea where her parents are) they get a little treat that makes them smile, apple sauce.

I think Annemarie says this because in Copenhagen the Nazis have probably taken all the ingredients to make applesauce such as fresh apples, and sugar so she hasn't had applesauce in a long time and she really enjoys it.

"Not if there is applesauce" with so much excitement because there were apples which were probably rationed by the nazis so the people of Copenhagen could not make apple sauce. Annemarie was excited because she probably hadn't had applesauce since she was probably 4 or 5 years old.

Annemarie means that she has not had applesauce in a long time ( before the German soldiers came) so she was very excited to finally have it again because back in Copenhagen their was no sugar to mix with the apples but the apples their were sweet enough so that the applesauce would be decent.

I think that Annemarie is saying that even though the Germans have taken away sugar, tea, coffee, rubber, fuel and much more and they are taking away Jewish it is not a bad time because they have taken away applesauce and all the Jewish people. Annemarie also looks to the bright side and never looks at the bad stuff and how Ellen might get caught.
1. She may mean she missed applesauce and she probably liked it but the applesauce wasn't sweet since sugar was rationed and since it was rationed it couldn't be like it had been.

ReplyDeleteQuestion 1: Annemarie means that the people of copenhagen have had normally just potatos and bread and the fact that there is applesauce is amazing because in the city you cant get applesauce unless you use the black market which can get you killed if your found but applesauce is a rare delicacy and is very delicous to the girls beacause it tastes so good and almost makes you forget that there are bad times and that its like before where applesauce was just a normal thing you could ask your parents for,but that was before the Nazis started rationing the food and took bread and butter
