RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 5, NUMBER THE STARS, MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 2016

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  WELCOME BACK FROM WINTER BREAK AND TO OUR BLOG.  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHTPR. 5 OF NUMBER THE STARS:

1.  In Chptr. 5, Ellen reflects on the day when she found out about Lise's death.  Ellen said sadly, "I remember it was raining".  She said, "it was still raining the next morning when Mama told me."  "Mama was crying, and the rain made it seem as if the whole world was crying."  Explain what Ellen might have meant by the "whole world was crying".

2.  Foreshadowing is when the author gives clues that something is going to happen without telling you exactly what might take place.

In Chptr. 5, Annemarie and Ellen were supposed to be normal sisters; so, they really had no need to whisper.  In fact Papa said they could giggle and talk because the bedroom door was closed.
"But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night."  And so they whispered.  Applying the definition of foreshadowing (above), explain what the bold printed quote might mean.  Be specific.

  1. 1. When Ellen said it felt like the world was crying she meant that the rain was the tears and the world was crying because Lise died.
    2. The bold printed sentence meant that the night seemed different because of what was happening to all the Jewish people

  2. When it says the whole world was crying since it was raining and everybody was very sad about what had happen that the rain meant the world was crying because of all the tragic events that happen.
    2. The foreshadow of every thing is when it says that it did not seem like a normal night that meant something bad is likely to happen

  4. 1. I think Ellen meant that the day lise died it was such a dreary day and the rain made it seem even drearier.

2.I think the night may have seemed different because usually they cant have sleepovers and now everything has changed.

  5. 1. I think that Ellen says that because she was really sad and she thought if the whole world had known about Lise’s tragedy the whole world might have been sad.

    2. It told the night felt different but not how it was different. There wasn’t any clues that might tell what was going to happen. Something was going to happen but the reader had to try to predict what it was.

    1. 1) What Ellen meant by " the whole world was crying" is that rain can be a sad thing. Rain usually can make people sad. To some people the sun is " happy" and rain is "sad". Every thing around her is sad. At this point of the story everything in Ellen's life is sad.

2)What "But the night did seem, somehow, different than a normal night" represents foreshadowing by not telling the reader that something is going to happen later on like when the Nazis come to the Johnansen's door. Annemarie's dad said that they could talk regularly, that everything was fine, but she had a gut feeling about that something bad was going to happen. This was a clue to the reader that something bad was going to happen, and it did.

  6. Maybe she is saying that her death was tragic so she thought of rain as earth's tears after her death.

#1. The "whole world was crying" is a metaphor and that day was Lise's death and it was raining. Ellen's mother is really saying that the world isn't really crying but its just raining and when you cry you have tears, and tears = water just like water in rain and since Lise's death it had been very very, very, very, sad.

#2. While Annemarie, Ellen, KIrsti, mamma and papa were all cozy and sound asleep outside there were 100s and 1000s of people that were Jewish being killed, taken away to concentration camps and extermination camps since the Nazi soliders had taken the synagogue.

  11. I think that Ellen saw that everyone around her was sad and heartbroken about Lise's death and there was probably a lot of tears so it wasn't very hard for Ellen to imagine the raindrops as tears and the earth shedding those tears.

  12. When they said the whole world was crying the meant that rain is water and so are tears
When Lise died it was a sad day so everyone who knew Lise was sad.
    2. When he says different night he means that a normal night Ellen wouldn't act like Annemarie's sister so it was not normal.

  13. I think that the night felt different from a normal nights because something bad or frightening might happen to either the girls or the Rosens.

    1) I think that when Ellen said "the whole world was crying" she
meant that when Lise died Ellen was very little so in her
eyes it was like the whole world was really crying because it
was so sad and everyone that Ellen knew was crying.

    2) When the text said: "But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night." I think the author used foreshadowing in this sentence by giving clues that since Ellen was staying with the Johansen's that maybe the Nazi soldiers were coming to do an inspection since their are Jewish People like the Rosen's living in the apartment building. Also the Nazis could also be looking for the Rosen's to arrest them.

  19. 1.I think she thought the whole world was crying because it was a very sad day for the family of Lise.

2.I think it ment that the night was sacary for Ellen and Annemarie because they do not know where Ellen's parents where.

  20. 1. i think that Ellen thought that the whole world was crying because it was raining and most people don't like the rain because you can't go outside and play all the things you could play if it were sunny outside and with lise's death that makes it worse because every one is sad while it is raining which make things more sad.

2.I think that the girls said "But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night." because this night they were scared and worried about what might happen to them like the Nazis came to take them to a concentration camp or steal Ellen.

  21. 1.what Ellen means by the whole world is crying is that everyone dear to Lise felt sad for their friends death.

  22. 2.The foreshadow may be that something will happen at night. The night was different because Ellen and Annamarie were supposed to be sisters until the war was over

1.What Ellen meant by, "the whole world was crying" is that the rain is like the world's tears. That combined with Ellen's mother crying made it seem (at least to Ellen) that the whole world was crying.

    2. The bold printed quote describing when Ellen and Annemarie were whispering might mean that the author is foreshadowing that the Nazis will come and find out that Ellen isn't really Annemarie's sister and take her away. If the Nazis did come then they would have to whisper to each other so the Nazis did not find them.

  24. 1.When Ellen said "it seemed as if the whole world was crying" She was probably overwhelmed and flustered and thought the world was ending. The rain made her think of tears and sadness because of what had happened to her.It was what first came to her mind thinking of that day.

    2. "But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night", in foreshadowing,is implying it wont be the Johansens average night.

  25. When Ellen said "whole world was crying" she might have meant that on rainy days it is normally gloomy, and since her mam was crying and outside it was raining the rain looked like teardrops falling down.
    2. When it says "But the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night" it means that it feels different to the girls because they have to pretend to be sisters when they are really hiding Ellen from the Germans, so it doesn't feel right.

  26. 1. I think when Ellen said the "whole world was crying" meant that since it was a sad time and it was raining outside so it was "crying" and tears are water from you and rain is water from the sky which is part of the world.

    2. The bold printed quote might mean that the night was different because they knew the Jewish people were in trouble and they knew that the German soldiers were investigating the houses for Jewish people and Ellen was Jewish so she could be in danger, so maybe they were scared of what might happen which caused their night to be different.

  27. 1.When Ellen said that "the whole world was crying" it was a metaphor to show how sad she was. Ellen knew that if the whole world knew who Lise was that they would be depressed over this tragedy as well. She thought the whole world was crying as if they felt the pain she did at the same time.

2.I think the bold foreshadowing the author used is to say that something like the soldiers might come and inspect their apartment or that they could kill them all for lying and make them tell where the Rosens are which would cause more lives to be at stake. The purpose of the girls whispering because they KNEW it would be a different night far from their average night. It was a bad difference in the book, but it could change into a good difference later in the book

  28. 1. I think when Ellen said "the whole world was crying" meant that since Lise died it was a sad time. The rain made it look like the world was crying because it was water drops falling from the sky and when you cry you have tears running down your face and it's like the rain falling from the sky.

    2. The bold print " but the night did seem somehow different" means that since Ellen and Annemarie were having a "sleepover" it felt different because the Johansens don't normally have visitors. Also I think it felt different from the Germans taking the Jewish people away.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. I think she might mean that it was sad and, because it was sad, raindrops look like teardrops so it looked like the world was crying except there can't be rain everywhere and the world can't cry.

2.I think the quote from the book "but the night did seem, somehow, different from a normal night" means they were having a "sleepover" which is different than what they had ever done before which is uncommon for them and they were having the "sleepover" because the Rosens were hiding when Ellen was over at Annemarie's apartment.

  30. 1. I think this means that this day was very sad so the rain may resemble the tears of her and the rest of the world.

    2. I think this means that the night feels different because of the fact that the girls were having a sleep over beacause of the Jewish people getting arrested. They also may have been quite because I think I they both knew that the soldiers were going to check the houses so they wanted to be quite in case.

  31. 1. I think this means that the rain drops were resembled as tear drops, and she probably said the "world" was crying because to her, the rain looked to cover about a lot of land. Of course she related this to crying because Lise died, and of course crying was the right thing to do.

    2. I think the foreshadowing meant that it was unusual for Annemarie, they didn't usually have visitors. Also I think that it wasnt a normal sleepover, where the girls are carefree, laughing and having fun. Ellen was more focused on the fact what and who is her "identity''? She is also worried about being found. The girls already knew this was gonna happen. But they were kinda off and on the edge with hiding and pretending. ~Kelly Lee
