HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 8 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
1. In Chptr. 8, Uncle Henrik says that tomorrow will be a day for fishing. Then, his smile disappeared. What can you infer the reason to be that Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing?
2. We learned about the death of Great Aunt Birte in Chptr. 8. Annemarie was confused to hear of this fact. She was thinking to herself that no one had called Copenhagen to say that there had been a death. No one seemed sad. Why do you think this is so? Explain and be specific.
1. I can infer the reason to be that Uncle Henrick's smile was disappearing was because Great Aunt Birte died. He probably thought of her and the memories they had together.
ReplyDelete2. I think no one called Copenhagen and no one was sad because Birte was probably really old. In her name it has the word GREAT, so it must mean she is really old and no one had heard much about her.
1. In Chptr. 8, Uncle Henrik says that tomorrow will be a day for fishing. Then, his smile disappeared. What can you infer the reason to be that Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing?
ReplyDeleteThe reason uncle Henrik's smile disappeared was because what they were talking about was sad and the Nazis were trying to steal people like Ellen and they knew that if they nweren't serious about this, then Ellen would be in really big danger.
2. We learned about the death of Great Aunt Birte in Chptr. 8. Annemarie was confused to hear of this fact. She was thinking to herself that no one had called Copenhagen to say that there had been a death. No one seemed sad. Why do you think this is so? Explain and be specific.
I think that no one seemed sad because there actually was no death and the adults were setting this up like a decoy or a distraction so they can sail to freedom.
Good job on your response...
DeleteI like how you inferred about how it was sad

1. In Chptr. 8, Uncle Henrik says that tomorrow will be a day for fishing. Then, his smile disappeared. What can you infer the reason to be that Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing?
ReplyDelete#1. I think that since the word "is the weather good for fishing" is saying is it safe for the Johansen's to come I think that Uncle Henrik is taking either Ellen or the whole Johansen family to Sweden with his boat because it probably is a great day or for Ellen because she's Jewish and Sweden isn't occupied by the Germans. Uncle Henrik's smile also disappears probably because the war, Ellen, Germans
and there is nothing to smile about.
2. We learned about the death of Great Aunt Birte in Chptr. 8. Annemarie was confused to hear of this fact. She was thinking to herself that no one had called Copenhagen to say that there had been a death. No one seemed sad. Why do you think this is so? Explain and be specific.
#2. Probably no one is sad because maybe because she isn't real and even though you don't know that person you would feel sad for that person.
1. I think uncle Henricks smile disappeared because maybe "tomorrow will be a day for fishing" is code for something dangerous or sad like if it means its a good time to escape then its not a laughing matter. (I think the smile was for show in case they were being watched)
ReplyDelete2. I think no one heard of death in Copenhagen because if there is no funeral because the Nazis wont let anyone have a funeral. I think no one seemed sad because either they don't hear that one died or they thought being sad would make it seem worse and encourage the Nazis.

1. I think that his smile disappeared because they were talking about (I think) leaving for Sweden and Uncle Henrick does not want them to leave because he is lonely and does not want anyone to be killed if they start fooling around to much and the Nazi soldiers got suspicious.
ReplyDelete2.I think that the reason no one was sad is because Annemarie never heard about Great Aunt Birte and maybe the family was using it as a code or a distraction for something that might come that's even worse than a death.
(P.S. everyone have fun in the snow:) )
I like that you said it was another code.
Delete1. Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing because right now in Denmark it is a sad time for everyone because what the Nazis are doing to the Jewish people. Tomorrow is a good day for fishing is code for tomorrow will be a good day to escape to Sweden were it is free and Germany hasn't won control over them yet. So Uncle Henrik is thinking about sad things that are happening in Denmark.
ReplyDelete2. I think that no one called Copenhagen and no one seemed sad because there really was no great aunt Birte that died. I think there is no great aunt Birte that died because so far whatever Annemarie thinks has been true. I think great aunt Birte's "death" is code for something that has to do with the escape to Sweden.
1} I think uncle Henrik smile had started to disappear because of the death of great aunt birte and it brought back memories of her and they were so sad to think about because she is now dead.
ReplyDelete2} I think that no one was sad about the death of great aunt birte because she might have not been widely known in the family because Annemarie said she had remembered all of the names of her mother's stories about her childhood .
1. Since we already know they aren’t going fishing they’re going to take Ellen someplace safe, we can also infer that is sad/scary for them to leave Ellen and not tell her what they are doing.
ReplyDelete2. Either there is no great Aunt Birte and she is just there to cover up when they go “fishing” or no one really knew her well and thy can’t feel sorry for someone they never knew.
Hunter Colson
I like the way u said that it is scary for Ellen because they are taking her to a place where she doesn't know.
Delete1) I think Uncle Henrik's smile disappeared because its going to be a hard time getting Ellen and the Johnason's to Sweeden. His smile could have disappeared because the Nazis were taking Jewish people to different kinds of camps and even killing them. He came in happy with a smile because Annemarie's mom cleaned the house. It made him feel happy and content. But when he said " it was a great time for fishing" his smile went away because of the trip and he doesn't want to get caught. He started to rememeber the dangers.
ReplyDelete2) No one seemed sad and Annemarie seemed confused about the death because Annemaire knew all about her sibilings and relatives because of her mom's stories, but she never knew Great- aunt Birte. She was very confused because she didn't know about a death and also didn't know who this person was. She thought " she didn't exist". Maybe it is another code to trick the Nazi when they" go fishing".
I think that this is another code and it means that whatever the Johansens and Uncle Henrik have planned for Ellen, they are ready to go through with it. I predict that the plan is to use Uncle Henrik's boat to take Ellen to Sweeden.
ReplyDeleteI think that there was no Great Aunt Birte and it was just more code to prevent the Nazis from getting suspicious. But, I also think think that Great Aunt Birte really did die, but she was part of the resistance and nobody called Copenhagen because if the Nazis knew that she was part of the resistance (if she was part of the resistance) they might be able to track the resistance members, and possibly kill them
Maybe. #2 is AMAZING
Delete-Olivia
I think his smile disappeared because he could either be hiding something or he must be trying to get them out while they are fishing. Part 2. I think not many people were sad because maybe she was a bad person.
ReplyDeleteSorry I wasn't able to read all of it
Deletei like how you refrenced that she might be a bad person because if she is real than that would be the reason Annemarie would not know her because her parents did not want her to know about someone bad
Delete1. When Uncle Henrik said "tomorrow will be a day for fishing" his smile disappeared because he did not care about fishing at all. He was really talking in code in case a Nazi is listening. So,his smile disappeared because this was serous and there risking there lives.
ReplyDelete2. I think Annemarie didn't know about her great Aunt or
get a call in Copenhagen because they may be hiding something about her. Or the Nazis may not have told them because they wanted to see who would be leaving for the Newyear if they knew there had been a death there would be more people to question while getting off the train.

Dear Olivia, I like your response to number 2 because you stated why they probably made up Great Aunt Birte.
Delete1. In Chptr. 8, Uncle Henrik says that tomorrow will be a day for fishing. Then, his smile disappeared. What can you infer the reason to be that Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing?
ReplyDelete1. I can infer that the reason Uncle Henrik's smile disappeared because something grave had just cross his mind. I think the "something grave" was Ellen. I believe that stating the weather was good for fishing was a code because, during Papa's talk with Uncle Henrik, Papa asked if the weather was good for fishing. I inferred that that had something to do with moving Jewish people to safety (Sweden). So I have inferred that Uncle Henrik is going to move Ellen the next day.
2. We learned about the death of Great Aunt Birte in Chptr. 8. Annemarie was confused to hear of this fact. She was thinking to herself that no one had called Copenhagen to say that there had been a death. No one seemed sad. Why do you think this is so? Explain and be specific.
2. I think that no one called Copenhagen and no one was sad about Great Aunt Birte because she does not really exist. I think Great Aunt Birte does not exist because no one has mentioned her before. Also, if there was a death in the family, someone would have come to inform them. On top of all that, no one seems sad and if a family member dies the relatives are always sad. I think that Great Aunt Birte was made up to help Ellen get to freedom in some way.
1. His smile probably disappeared because there is nothing, I repeat NOTHING good about war and stuff like that (ex: Millions of people dying in a nuclear war, A disease that causes a war for a cure and survival)
ReplyDelete2. I think no one in Copenhagen was sad because Great Aunt Birte didn't exist as it said at the end of the chapter and since Great Aunt Birte didn't exist she didn't know what was happening or if someone in her family did die, she didn't know who that person was.
1) I think Uncle Henrik's smile disappeared after he said "tomorrows a good day for fishing" because there was supposedly a death and maybe tomorrow Ellen was going to be transported or taken somewhere else.
ReplyDelete2) I think that Annemarie is so confused because she has never heard of Great Aunt Birte and since she died and no one seemed to be sad she was confused on what was going on and that maybe she didn't really die.
1. Uncle Henriks smile dissapeared because it is one of the only things to do left that the Nazi's didn't take away from them. 2. Annemarie was confused because she has never heard of great aunt Birte and no one was sad so she is wondering if there even is a great aunt Birte
ReplyDelete1. I think the reason that uncle hendrick smile turned into frown because he was maybe thinking of something sad ( the war or great aunt birte). He might of thought if the were caught with Ellen the consequences.
ReplyDelete2. I think Annemarie is confused because she never met her great aunt or she just doesn't remember her because she was so far back in the family tree (. Great aunt
Mr johansen Mrs johansen
Annemarie )
Great aunt Bertia is the aunt of Mrs. Johansen
1.Hendrick smiles when he is leaving because he is excited that they are taking Ellen to Sweden. He also knows that he is talking in code because Mama and Hendrick and they don't want the soldiers to hear what the are doing.
ReplyDelete2.I think no one acted sad because they did not want to frightened or scare Annemarie,Ellen or Kirsti. They also might been keeping the secret because she might have been killed by the Nazi soldiers.
1. I can infer that the reason he stopped smiling was because there we're greater tasks at hand like the Nazi's occupation and taking Ellen to Sweden.
ReplyDelete2. She could be a decoy and not real which explains why Annemarie doesn't know her or it could be that she was just really old and nobody was really concerned.
I like that in 1 you inferred that they were taking Ellen to Sweden. Good job on that blog.
DeleteI can infer that Uncle Henrik's smile was disappearing because he was referring to Ellen and the Nazis and that was sad. The matter was nothing to laugh or joke about. It was a serious matter because it is life or death situation for Ellen and the Johansens since they are hiding a Jew. (Ellen)
ReplyDelete2. I think this was so because Great Aunt Birte didn't exist and it was a "code" word just like "is the weather good for fishing." I think it means that that something serious was going to happen that night (something that has to do with Ellen)
Good response I like how you answered number 1
Delete1. I think that his smile went away because he was using a code word that had to do with Ellen and the Nazis which is sad.
ReplyDelete2. I think this is so because Great aunt Birte isn't real I think this is another code word that means someone has died back in Copenhagen. I think they used a code word so that Ellen would not get worried.
