GOOD MORNING, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 9 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
1. The theme of bravery has been introduced in Chptr. 9. Uncle Henrik is quoted as saying, "It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. We know only what we need to know. Explain what you think Uncle Henrik's quote means. Focus on the word in italics and what you think it means.
2. In Chptr. 9, Mrs. Johansen references those arriving and entering the living room as "friends of Great Aunt Birte". Annemarie knew that Mama was lying, and she could see that Mama understood that she knew. In that moment, they looked at each other for a long time in silence. In that moment, with that look, they became equals. Explain what the bold printed sentence means. Be specific.
I think that Uncle Henrik meant that not knowing the danger of the situation that you have to be brave about makes it easier to be brave when you are not completely aware of what you should be afraid of.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means that Mama and Annemarie both knew the same information about Great Aunt Birte and knew that the other person knew exactly the truth about Great Aunt Birte.
I like how you said that the other person knew exactly the truth about Great Aunt Birte because they both knew about her being nonexistent :)
DeleteGood job, I liked how you said not knowing the danger of the situation helps you be brave easier.
Delete1. I think he means that if you did know the truth it would make you scared but if you didn't then you wouldn't be scared of it because you don't know it.
ReplyDelete2. I think it means that they became equal with the truth since before Mrs. Johansen knew it but Annemarie didn't but know they both know it.
I like how you said if you the truth then you might be scared.

Delete1.I think uncle Henrick means when he said "that it is "easier" to be brave when you don't know everything" is that if you know to much it might overwhelm you and make you so stressed that you cant think. Also it's hard to be brave if you know somethings going to happen (ex. if you know your going to get a broken toe then you might stress over it but if it just happens then you might just deal with it.)
ReplyDelete2.I think the bold printed words "In that moment, with that look, they became equals" mean that now neither of them knew anything the other didn't and all the secrets were gone (between them). I also think it means that when Anemarie lied to Ellen then she was even with her mom who had lied to her the same way she did to Ellen.
#John Hipes
1. Its is easier the be brave if you don't know anything because if you do know, you will be worried to much and it juggles your mind. Annemarie's goal is to help Ellen, and this quote for Annemarie is to keep quiet and not to worry, cause the Nazis might catch on. Being brave isn't about fighting and protecting all the time, it also means to have the COURAGE to be secretive about dangerous things.
ReplyDelete2. This means that in that moment, after looking at each other for a long time, they were both on the same page. Annemarie knew her mom was lying and she knew what the code was. Inge knew, Annemarie knew that Inge was lying. -Kelly Lee
Very good response! I love your number 1 and how you recited from the passage/text. You number 2 was short but you answered it perfectly. You said what needed to be said in a short 2 sentences. Keep up the good work.
DeleteEmily Richards
I think Uncle Henrik means that it is a lot easier to do "missions", or stuff that you are scared to do because you know it could turn out dangerous/bad. If you know everything that you have to do, you will be scared to do it because you now know how risky it could be. If you don't know exactly what is happening then you do what you are told and you won't be as scared because your not exactly sure where you are going. That is why it would be easier if you didn't know the full truth/mission.
ReplyDeleteWhen it says "In that moment, with that look, they became equals" it means that when they looked at each other they were thinking the exact same thing it it was like a half and another half were put together to make one whole. It is talking about a connection between Annemarie and her mother.
EMILY RICHARDS
I like how you said in number 2 that it was like half and half that were put together to make a whole.
Delete1. I think when Uncle Henrik said " It is much easier to be brave if you don't know everything" meant that it's easier to be brave and use what you know then not understanding anything and struggle.
ReplyDelete2." In that moment, with that look, they became equals" I think means that they looked at each other in about the same way. They probably looked at each other like that because Mama and Annemarie both know what's going on that Mama was lying.
I think you did good on the first response but on the second i think you were way off

1. I think what Uncle Henrik meant by it is easier to be brave if you don't know everything is that if you don't know everything that your doing (but other people do), it'll be easier to be brave because the parts that could cause you to worry are left out which makes you feel better about what you are doing.
ReplyDelete2. The bold printed sentence probably meant that at that moment Annemarie knew exactly what Mrs. Johansen knew. Anemarie knew what all was going on.
~Malachi Etoniru
1. I think he means that if you knew everything, you would know what happens in the future but if you didn't know the future you would have to be brave in what situation you might be in that was unexpected to you.
ReplyDelete2. I think the bold printed phrase means that they were equal in knowing that Great Aunt Birte wasn't real but Annemarie didn't know what was going to be put in the coffin because of Great Aunt Birte who is nonexistent.
1. When Uncle Henrik said "it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything" means if you don't know about everything that is going on that is bad it isn't as hard to be brave because your not scared of anything that could happen because you don't know everything.
ReplyDelete2. In that moment, with that look, they became equals means that they both knew the truth and there were no lies between them now because they both knew the code.
CHPTR. 9 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
ReplyDelete1. The theme of bravery has been introduced in Chptr. 9. Uncle Henrik is quoted as saying, "It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. We know only what we need to know. Explain what you think Uncle Henrik's quote means. Focus on the word in italics and what you think it means.
#1. The quote that Uncle Henrik said said means that if you don't know about the world around you, you are brave and know what to say like if someone is in danger and you don't know that well someone asked you who that person was. You knew what that persons name was but not that they were in danger so you were brave to answer that question. The quote means it is easier to be brave if you don't know about the world and what is happening around you than to know and face that problem that you must be brave about.
2. In Chptr.
#2. In that moment, with that look, they became equals means that they both lied to protect people so they were the same. It also means that they knew what was going to happen and now they were also lying for one thing help the people around them to be brave and not scared.
I loved your response , your number one is amazing how you explain what bravery means to you nice thinking ^-^

Explain what you think Uncle Henrik's quote means. Focus on the word in italics and what you think it means.
ReplyDeleteI think that uncle henrick is saying that you don't have to know every thing because there are somethings you don't and if you learn some of those things you could hurt yourself or others.
2. In Chptr. Be specific.
it means that after Annmarie found out her mother lied to her that when they exchanged looks it meant she knew why she had to lie to her
I think Henrik means that if you knew all about a situation it would be scary like Kirsti doesn't know all about the occupation so it isn't scary to her because the have been there her whole life.
ReplyDelete2. I think that means that Annemarie knew what Mrs.Johansen was thinking and Mrs.Johansen knew what Annemarie was thinking.
Good Response I like how you referenced Kirsty in #1
DeleteI really like the way you used Kirsti as an example for your first question but your second question does not make much sense.
DeleteHayden, I like how you mentioned that Kirsty was not scared of the occupation because she did not know the danger that comes with it
DeleteI like how you said the occupation was there her whole life.
Delete1. The theme of bravery has been introduced in Chptr. 9. Uncle Henrik is quoted as saying, "It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. We know only what we need to know. Explain what you think Uncle Henrik's quote means. Focus on the word in italics and what you think it means.
ReplyDeleteI think he says it is much easier to be brave if you dont know everything because if every body knew everything about everything life would be much scarier esoecially at a time like now. If you let someone know to much about a scary subject they will become evn more scared. It would be easier to be brave about something you didnt know that much about so you dont know how scary and dangerous that thing really is.
2. In Chptr. 9, Mrs. Johansen references those arriving and entering the living room as "friends of Great Aunt Birte". Annemarie knew that Mama was lying, and she could see that Mama understood that she knew. In that moment, they looked at each other for a long time in silence. I think this means that although they were not equal by age now they were equal in mind when it comes to this topic wich is getting Ellen to Sweden and also Annamarie has figured out the secrets or lies they have been telling them so know she knows almost exactly what Mama knows.
I think when Henrik says it is much easier to be brave if you don't know everything because if you know what you need to know and if you know many things, you would be frightened because you would know everything the Nazis could do to you
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2
I think what annemerie means by they were all equals is that they all wanted to save the jewish people and Great Aunt Birte symbolizes the jewish people so Danish saviors can work together to get Ellen and her family to Sweden.
i think that what uncle henrick means is that if you knew everything then you could be too smart about whats going to happen in the future and that might make you prepare for the future and change the conversation completely because you knew what to say and when the conversation was happening
ReplyDeleteThe bold printed sentence means that they both were liers now too protect who they cared for they had too lie so that the others wouldnt get hert because they told them the truth they were equal even though one was older they were now the same

1. I think what uncle Henricks quote means that if you do not know the trouble you can get into for somethings, it will be easier to do that task. One example of this is when Annemarie told the soldiers Ellen's real name when they were stopped for running. If you do not worry about the trouble, then you can do it faster than getting held back for worrying.
ReplyDelete2.I think that when Annemarie thought they became equals, She knew that Mama knew that Annemarie knew they were lying about Great Aunt Birte, so they became equals for both knowing something that no one knew exept the grownups.
Dear Rose, I like your response to question number 1 because you added a lot of detail.

ReplyDelete1. What Uncle Henrik means by, "it is much easier to be brave if you o not know everything" is that if you do not know what all is at stake then it is easier to be brave. For intense when Annemarie did not know what the Nazis do to Jewish people she might not have been so brave when the soldiers stopped her in the street on her way home from school.
2. In Chptr.
2. What, "at that moment they became equals means that neither Mamma nor Annemarie were lying to each other and they were lying to others about the same thing, they had the same amount of knowledge.
I like how you said that everything is at stake and how Annemarie might not be as brave as she was.Good Job

1. Uncle Henrik means that if they know everything it may mess Annemarie up because if she knew how everything was going to happen she might start getting nervous instead of how she would act if she didn't know.
ReplyDelete2. The sentence means that they became equals because they both knew the same amount of information about what was going on.
-Bisola Fakayode
1. Uncle Henrik means it is hard to lie to the Nazis if you know you are lying and you know you are taking a risk at getting trouble, but it is easier if the lie is actually what you think is the truth.
ReplyDelete2. They became equals because they now knew that the other knew what they knew and because of that they now would show respect for the other and treat the other like an equal.
Hunter Colson
I like what yo said for #1.
Delete1.)I think that Uncle henrik means that not knowing the danger of something that it is easier to be brave when u do not know what to be scared of.
ReplyDelete2.)I think that when it says "In that moment, with that look, they became equals" means that when they looked at each for a while they became equal. Annemarie knew that Mrs. Johansen was lying and so did Mrs. Johansen.
1. What Uncle Henrik means is that when you do not know scary things then you still have bravery inside you and so it makes it easy to find that bravery. 2. What Mrs. Johansen means is that there both lying about that Great Aunt Birte doesn't exist so they are doing the same thing
ReplyDeleteWhat Uncle Henrik meant by "It is much easier to be brave if you didn't know everything" means that if you don't know what is about to happen you will not have to react to scary stuff and could be brave. For example if Annemarie knew all the everything about the Nazis she would be scared. Ucle Henrik thinks Annemarie can be brave like her mom and dad because Annemarie doesn't know anything so it is easier for her to be brave
ReplyDeleteWhat "in the moment with that look they looked like equals" means that they both know secrets so they are alike. They are equals because they know the same thing about Great Aunt Birte. Great Aunt Birte didn't exist but it is a code to throw the Nazis off. The adults have secrets and they keep them away from the kids since Annemarie knows one secret so shes equal with her mo who is an adult. They both know secrets.
1.I think he mean that it is easier to be brave when you don't know everything because you do not have a lot of stress on your mind.
ReplyDelete2.They became equals means that they were thinking the same think and they knew what was about to happen.
1) I think when Uncle Henrik said "It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything." he meant that if you don't know everything you won't nesecarily have to think about it so it will be easier on you because if you know everything you could be in more danger and you would be very stressed and probably mess something up and be scared but if you don't know everything you won't be as scared and worried about what could happen.
ReplyDelete2) I think that when the text said that Annemarie and Mrs.Johansen became equals it meant that sense they both now knew about the plan they are now equally involved.
1.Uncle Henrik meant that it is easier for people to be brave and do brave things. Mrs.Johansen,Mr.Johansen,Peter Nielson and uncle Henrik know a lot about what is happening with the Nazis and the Jewish people in that time period. If Annemarie knew these things then she knew what the Nazis could do and se might not be brave when she needs to.
ReplyDelete2.When the text states that "In that moment, with that look, they became equals" it meat that at that moment they both knew the same things, they both understood each other and knew what was happening with the coffin and the escape.
