HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! WE ARE BACK ON THE BLOG AS WE BEGIN OUR NOVEL STUDY OF NUMBER THE STARS. BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 1:
1. In the beginning of Chptr. 1, Lois Lowry references a physical feature of both Annemarie and Ellen. She states, "Annemarie's silvery blonde hair flew behind her, and Ellen's dark pigtails bounced against her shoulders". What do you believe is Lowry's purpose for including such detail about each of the characters? Explain.
2. After being stopped by the soldiers on the street corner, Annemarie looked back to see that Ellen's face, usually rosy-cheeked, was pale and her dark eyes were wide. Why and/or what may be the cause for Ellen's expression? Explain.
3. Peter Nielson often brought the "Free Danes", a Danish newspaper, to the Johansens. He was very careful in his delivery and after Mama and Papa read the paper, Mama always burned it. What might be the reason for hiding and/or being so careful in delivering the paper? What would make Mama burn the paper after it was read? Be specific in your explanation?
1. I believe the purpose was to just give a little bit of detail to show what they kind of look like if you picture it in your mind and maybe later on it would describe a little bit more detail and features of the character.
ReplyDelete2. The expression was probably because she was frightened of the soldiers and she didn't want to get caught running and getting in some sort of trouble that Annemarie got into.
3.I think the reason to hide it and burn it was so if a soldier came they wouldn't see it and it was also illegal. What made mama burn the paper was to make sure a soldier or someone that would be a snitch didn't find out and it wouldn't cost her life.
I love your number 2 and 3 because it gets straight to the point without making it so detailed, but it still answers the question. Keep it up
DeleteI believe that he included such detail about the character because later on in the book the soldiers might ask about a little girl with silvery blonde hair or dark hair and he might include that so you know who he is talking about.
ReplyDelete2. The soldiers talking directly toward her and that they could take her life if she said something wrong so she probably got nervous
3. The reason for delivering the paper so carefully and hiding it is probably because it is illegal and if someone got caught delivering it to someone the would die. Mama would burn the paper because if she got caught reading it she would die
I LOVE your response especially number 1 because I liked how you went back and thought of how Mrs. Rosen said she wanted Annemarie and Ellen to take a different path to school so they wouldn't get in trouble by the same soldiers and maybe cost there life because of something they were doing wrong.
DeleteEmily, I like what you said for # 2 ,but did you ever think about Ellan being Jewish and the soldiers are Nazis ,and the whole war? Just asking :-[
DeleteI like #3 the best because you said if someone got caught they would die but usually when you do something illegal you get sent to jail but you can sometimes get killed (by the Germans in that timeline but in this timeline, the police) if you do something very illegal.
Delete1. He probably was trying to give you a idea what they look like,or he was trying to give you a idea about if the soldiers mention a little girl with long silvery hair they are talking about Annemarie and if they say a girl with pigtails it is Ellan.
ReplyDelete2. Ellan was probably scared because her and her family were Jewish and they were Nazi soldiers and the Nazi were against the Jews and have been killing them
3. Peter hides them well because if he runs into a soldier and they find out he has these illegal papers he could go to jail or get killed, and delivering if he just threw them on the floor in the apartment the soldiers could find it and kill Johansens. The Johansens burn it because they do not want any body (especially the Nazi soldiers) to find it or it could cost them a lot.
Tyler wood
I like the way you said that the Nazi soldiers and Hitler were against Jewsand their religion.
Delete1. I think it was Lois Lowry's idea to tell the reader how they looked so the reader can visualize, in their mind, how they would look if they were actually existing in the real world in the 1940s.
ReplyDelete2. I think that Ellen was so pale-faced because she was scared of the guards and scared of the guards killing her which made sense for her to have a pale face since she was so scared
3. I think Peter Nielson was careful because the newspaper was illegal in Copenhagen, Annemarie's hometown so Peter may get arrested by the Germans. I think Mama burns the newspaper after they read it because she doesn't want to be caught and sent to jail, away from Annemarie, who needs her so she can live a good life and an even better one after the war.
I think Lowry's purpose of doing this was to make the reader feel like a part of the book, or give really good expressing detail. If they didn't give good detail then the book would be BOOOOOOORING.
ReplyDeleteEllen's expression is caused by the soldiers. I think that in this time the soldiers showed great intimidation because nazies kill people for no reason, so they might be skeptical about what they might do to them.
I think that they are so careful with hiding and being careful is because the newspapers are illegal so if they were caught with one then they might be killed or punished. If the papers were found the soldiers would ask who gave or are you giving this to and anyone involved would be included in the punishment.
Good job I liked how you said that the author wanted you to feel like you were a part of the book
DeleteGood job I liked how you said that the author wanted you to feel like you were a part of the book
Delete1.I think Lois Lowry's idea was to tell you how fast the girls were running by telling that there hair would fly back depending on how fast they are moving. If they moved fast, their hair would fly back by the air. If they moved slow, their hair would only bounce. In this case, Annemarie was moving fast while Ellen struggled hard to keep up.
ReplyDelete2. I think that Ellen had such a expression because the Nazi soldiers hated Jewish people. She knew if she did anything wrong, she could be killed then and there and risk the lives of her family.
3. I think that Peter was so careful about delivering the paper because if the Nazi's found it, he would be killed or sent to jail for life. The paper contains information the Nazi's find confidential and they don't want people reading it because it makes them seem weak.I think the Johansens burn the paper so they do not get caught doing illegal actions which could scar the life of the family.
I like how in the 2nd question you said that Ellen was Jewish and the Nazis hated Jewish people and she could be killed if she did anything wrong.=)
Delete1. I think Lois Lowry references that because Ellen is a Jew but he hasn’t said anything about that yet, so the reader might have to process that and figure out that around that time period Jews were unpopular and have dark hair and brown eyes.
ReplyDelete2.Ellen’s expression might be like that because she is scared that the soldiers are going to accuse her of being a Jew because she has dark hair and brown eyes and that is a common characteristic of Jews.
3.“Free Danes” was an illegal paper, which is why Peter Nielson was so careful to deliver it, and also why Mama might burn it after reading it.
Hunter Colson
You did a good job but you need to explain a little bit more for #3.
Delete*__*
Hunter, I think that you could add why it was an illegal newspaper, but otherwise this is a good response.

She states, "Annemarie's silvery blonde hair flew behind her, and Ellen's dark pigtails bounced against her shoulders". What do you believe is Lowry's purpose for including such detail about each of the characters? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think that Lois Lowry the author wrote this in too because he was showing the difference between them and like it says in the back of the book that Annemarie has to pretend that she is her sister and maybe the author was telling us how they look like so we get an image of how they look like.
2. After being stopped by the soldiers on the street corner, Annemarie looked back to see that Ellen's face, usually rosy-cheeked, was pale and her dark eyes were wide. Why and/or what may be the cause for Ellen's expression? Explain.
I think maybe Ellen was really scared because those were Nazi soldiers and they usually killed Jewish people and Ellen is Jewish.
Peter was probably bringing the newspaper to them secretly and Mamma and Papa are probably burning it after they read it because if the Nazis found out that they were reading the paper that they might get the idea to plan to kill more Nazi soliders.
The reason he puts so much detail in the text is because you can see how they look and how they act.
ReplyDelete2.The reason that Ellen is looking like this I think, is because she is very scare and nervous.
3.I think they his and burned it because it tells the secrets about what the "spys" are doing to the factories.
1. I believe Lowry's purpose for including such detail about each of the characters is because she wants you to be able to picture the characters(vivid imagery), she also wants to make her story very detailed.
ReplyDelete2. I think the cause for Ellen's expressions are that she is very scared and anxious of what the soldiers might do.
3. Peter was being careful when he delivered the newspaper because it was an illegal paper and was banned were they live and he did not want to be caught with it or giving it to other people. Mama always burned the paper after her and Papa read it because she did not want to leave any evidence and then people find it because she would get in trouble and so would Peter for giving it to them.
I really like your response to #1 and #3! Good job!-Olivia
Delete1.I think that the author states that Annemarie has silver blonde hair and Ellen has brown hair because I think that this will play a big role in the holocaust.
ReplyDelete2.i think that Ellen Looks so pale because she is so scared and when you get scared you kind of turn white or pale and all you can think about is what your scared of.
3.peter hides the newspaper because if the soldiers saw it they would kill the johansens because they knew too much. They burn it so no one saw it because if they did they would get suspicious and search everyone's apartment room.
Dear William, I like your answer to question number 2 because you stated that when you get scared sometimes you do become pale.
Delete1. I think that he describes the characters with detail so that the reader can create an image of the characters in their head making the book easier to read and understand.
ReplyDelete2. I think that fear is the cause of Ellen's unusual expression, fear of the soldier, fear for Annemarie and Kirsti, but the most frightening, fear for herself, her life, and her family, fear is the expression that shows up on Ellen's face.
3. The reason hiding the newspaper might be that the Nazis didn't want the Danes reading the newspaper for fear of losing their authority over them if the newspaper inspires them to do something big, like bombing their country or leader of their country or someone important that the country couldn't stay stable without
1. Lowry wants to provide you a good visual of how the girls looked but also pointing out their differences.
ReplyDelete2. Ellen's expression is a reflection of her realizing what the Nazis were up to. The Nazis tortured, killed and worked the Jewd relentlessly while in concentration camps.
3. Peter was careful in delivering the newspaper because if a soilder saw him with the paper they would think he was one of the rebels who sabotaged the Nazis. Mama burned it afterwards because of some of the house checks done by the Nazis which could lead to a death sentence either right a way or going to a concentration camp.
I liked how you listed all the things the nazis did GREAT RESPONCE.

ReplyDelete1. I think Lowry's purpose for including such detail about each of the characters was because knowing what the characters look like make you feel like they are every day people like all of us. Also Hitler had said that people with blonde hair and blue eyes were not as good as people with dark hair and dark eyes.
2. After being stopped by the soldiers on the street corner, Annemarie looked back to see that Ellen's face, usually rosy-cheeked, was pale and her dark eyes were wide. Why and/or what may be the cause for Ellen's expression? Explain.
2. Ellen's eyes were wide and her cheeks were pale, when they were usually rosy colored, because she was extremely frightened by the Nazi soldiers who were talking to Annemarie and Kirsty. She was frightened because she knew that the soldiers could do whatever they wanted to do with them (which was probably horrible) if they did anything that the soldiers did not like.
3. Peter Nelson was hiding and being so careful in his delivery because if the Germans found out that he was delivering an illegal newspaper he would most likely be killed. The Germans would kill him because he is giving news to the people and if there was some hope in winning the war the people might rebel. Mama burned the paper after she and Papa read it because she wanted to make sure that the Germans did not find out that they were reading an illegal newspaper because they would defiantly be killed if it was found.
I like the good details for all three answers :D
Delete1)I think Lois Lowry refrences physical features about Annemarie and Ellen to help us imagine what they look like.
ReplyDelete2)Ellen's face was pale, dark-eyed, and usually rosy-cheeked reflected that she realized what the Nazis were doing and they might recognize that she was a Jew and would send her to a concentration camp.
3) Peter was bringing the papers very caustiously because if the soldiers saw him with the "Free Danes" newspaper they would think he was one of the Nazi rebels who betrayed them. Mama Johansen burned the paper because if the Nazis found it during their checks they would kill the Johansens' or take them to concentration camps.
1.) I think it was so we could make a slight visual picture of what they looked like when they were running with how their hair was "bouncing".
ReplyDelete2.) I think Ellen was not only out of breath but scared or afraid of the Nazi who stopped Annemarie and so she had a pale look to her skin and wide eyes instead of rosy-cheeked.
3.) The perpose that he hid the paper was because it was illegal
and so if he was seen with it he would go to jail and Annemarie's mom would burn it after reading because it was illegal so she wanted no one to find the papers if they got invaded.
1. Lois Lowry states the girl's hair so you can visualize how the girls looked like when they were running.
ReplyDelete2. The cause of Ellen's expression is that she is a Jew and she is afraid of the Nazis she's also might be afraid of going to a concentration camp.
3. Annemarie's mom would want to burn the paper because its illegal and they wouldn't want to be caught and taken to concentration camps.
-Bisola Fakayode
1) I think Lois included this because she wanted us to feel like we are actually in the book, kind of like we were looking at the girls in person. Its also vivid imagery. Its gives us an idea on how they probably looked regularly. So later on we can imagine what the girls look like at the time period. This could also
ReplyDeletegive us an idea on what speed the girls are running at.
2) I think Ellen was pale and her eyes were big because she was not out of breath but she was scared. Scared of what the soldiers would do to her, Annemarie and Kirsti. Maybe she thought they would attack them, send them somewhere, etc. Even they might realize that she was a Jew and send her to a camp or kill her.
3) I think Peter was Careful when delivering the papers because one, the papers were illegal. Secondly, he might not want to get caught and killed, or tortured. What have made mama burn it was because if the Nazis found out that they were delivering illegal goods, they will capture them, torture them and kill them. ~Kelly Lee
1. I think the author is trying to give detail to the characters so we can visualize what they look like and what they are doing.
ReplyDelete2. I think that Ellen was scared.because they were in a war with germany so they would be frightened to see one.
3. They would hide it because it was illigal and if they got caught they would ho to jail or be killed. Mama burned the newspaper after she had read it because she didn`t want to get caught and go to jail or be killed.
1) The purpose of this description is that Lowry wants to give you an vivid imagery so you can picture it in your mind. You would be able to picture how the characters look.
ReplyDelete2)The reason for Ellen's expression is probably because she is scared and maybe nervous. She is scared and nervous because the Nazi soldiers might ask her something and if she gets it wrong they might get mad at her. Maybe they might kill her for that. The Nazi soldiers have been very mean to the people in her town. They are taking control of the Jews.
3)The Nazis made the Free Danes illegal to read back then. They burnt it because if they get caught reading they might be arrested or killed. Their parents wanted to learn more about " news of sabotage against the Nazis".
I think you wrote a very good response but you could have given more description for numbers 2 and 3.
DeleteQuestion1: I think Louis Lowry was trying to tell us a good visual difference between the girls that will help us later on.
ReplyDeleteQuestion2: Ellen is so afraid because I think she is a jew and is worried she will be captured by the nazis and killed or sent to concentration camps.
Question3: The paper has to be hidden because of two reasons mainly because the paper is illegal, but also because of the fact the germans wanted to make the jews believe that they were winning the war so that the jews thought they were supreme. I think that mrs.johansen burns the paper so that the nazis can't find out they read and get the paper just so they can kill with a reason.
1. I think he did that because he wanted to show how the characters look like and compare them
ReplyDelete2. It could be that she is frightened by the soldier and she is in shock.
3. It was because in the book it said the newspaper was illegal so he took it to them very carefully so no one could see it and for the same reason Mama burned them.
1.I think the author used so much description to help you relate to them.It also gives you a better idea of what they look like.
ReplyDelete2.Ellen probably just was shocked. She had just finished running and bumped into a shocking surprise. Her eyes where probably wide because she wanted to know what was happening but it was not what she was expecting.
3.They are so careful hiding the paper because, it is probably illegal or have been band like most foods. Annmarie's mom burns it so,no evidence can be traced to her or found. She gets it though so they can know whats happening but not get caught or get in trouble.
