HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 3 OF NUMBER THE STARS:
1. In Chptr. 3, Annemarie discovers that Mrs. Hirsch's button shop has been closed. She questions in her mind, "Where was Mrs. Hirsch"? "The Hirsch family had gone "somewhere". Why do you think the word "somewhere" has been written in italics? What might it signify. Explain.
2. In Chptr. 3, Annermarie calms herself by thinking, "It is only in fairy tales that people were called upon to be so brave, to die for one another. Not in real life Denmark". Annemarie later thinks that she is glad to be an ordinary person who would never be called upon for courage. Do you agree or disagree with Annemarie's last thought (in bold print)? Yes or No. Why or Why not? Explain.
1.I think that when Annemarie says "somewhere" in italics she means that she wasn't entirely sure where the Hirsch family had gone somewhere that she did not know of.
ReplyDelete2.NO. I do not agree with Annemarie. I disagree with her because she, sometimes might have to stand up for Ellen or even fight a soldier and both of these things are very courageous for a kid.
GREAT RESPONSE. I like how you explained what things she might have to do in question2
DeleteI like the way you said she was courageous for a kid.
DeleteI think when Annemarie said "somewhere" in italics it means that she knew something had to be wrong if they were somewhere and the shop was closed. Later on she found out the Nazi's shut it down because they were Jewish.
ReplyDelete2.I don't agree because at some point in her life she will want to stand up for Ellen or any kind of Jewish person. It's not fair to the Jews because they are treated differently then everybody else. People are "suffering".
GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I liked how you supported your answer.
DeleteI like both your answers I can tell you took your time and thought about what your saying. Amazing Job!
Delete-Olivia
I think it means that the were somewhere but she did not no were.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree because it certain situations you have to be brave to or not to say yes or no.
what do you mean not say yes or no, also that's what somewhere MEANS why is it in ITALICS.
DeleteTyler I think you need to add more details to your answer.
Delete1.I think "somewhere" is in italics because they could have been caught P.O.W but Annemarie might not know what that is but the parents do and don't want Annemarie to know yet because she is to young.
ReplyDelete2.I disagree with Annemarie because anyone at any time can be called upon to deal with bravery. Every hero or brave person at one point WAS an ordinary person so even if she is ordinary she might have to deal with bravery at one point.
1. I think it was written in italics because she wasn't quite sure where she had gone
ReplyDeleteso because she did not know gave her a sense of fear.
2. I disagree because everything will not always be normal so you never know when
there will be a moment where you have to be brave. For example, you go to a theme
park with your friends and you are scared of roller coasters and there is one that everyone is going on and at that point it is your choice to be brave or not.
I like that you said she didn't know were she is. But you could give more detail.
DeleteI think that somewhere written in italics means that Mrs Hirsch didn't really go anywhere, the term was just used sarcastically and Mrs Hirsch is at home, worrying about her business. I also think that the Nazis have taken Mrs Hirsch to a concentration or an extermination camp.
ReplyDeleteI somewhat agree with Annemarie's last thought because most ordinary people do not get called upon for courage in their lives people in Annemarie's situation, with evil German Nazis all over the street, I wouldn't count on not being called upon for courage.
AWESOME RESPONSE ESPECIALLY FOR NUMBER 1 great work.

ReplyDelete1. In Chptr. 3, Annemarie discovers that Mrs. Hirsch's button shop has been closed. She questions in her mind, "Where was Mrs. Hirsch"? "The Hirsch family had gone "somewhere". Why do you think the word "somewhere" has been written in italics? What might it signify. Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think that somewhere is in italics because Annemarie doesn't no where Mrs. Hirsch has gone or because Annemarie may think that the Nazis might have taken Mrs. Hirsch to a concentration camp or a extermination camp.
2. Explain.
NO!!!!!! I disagree with Annemarie because 1, just because you are normal in the way she is saying it doesn't mean you don't have to be brave because you would need to be brave for many thing s like going on a stage, singing in front of 1,000,000,000,000 people and many more 2, you really have to be brave wherever and whenever you go or do something somewhere.
1."Somewhere" is in italics because Mr. Hirsch is not at her store and her store had a lock on it. Annemarie saw the Nazi sign on the door and would have wondered if the Nazis have taken Mrs. Hirsch "somewhere". People during this time didn't know were the Nazis took people. We now know that the Nazis had shut it down to torture them. Annemarie doesn't know where she is.
ReplyDelete2 I disagree with Annemarie because you have to be ready for anything to happen. Everybody that is brave or is a hero starts out like Annemarie is right now and don't think they have to be called upon. For example: she might have to be called upon to protect Ellen, her family and the other Jewish people.
Good job Roman I like how you used a lot of example and reference from what we know from the book. Also i like how you said that: "People during this time didn't know were the Nazis took people." I thought it was a good statement or fact to put in you response.
Delete1. It signals that Annemarie knew that the Hirsch family would not just leave the shop. There would have to be a meaning why they left. I think “somewhere” signals that Annemarie is scared that something has happened to the Hirsches but she does not yet know if it is good or bad.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree with Annemarie’s thought because if everyone was like that the world would be a really bad place to live.
Hunter Colson
1) I think somewhere is in italics because Annemarie might be thinking that something bad happened to the Hirsch's or that their sick or hurt or have been taken away by the Nazis from their home in Denmark.
ReplyDelete2) I disagree with Annemarie because there could always be a time when someone is in danger and you need to help them or if it was your chance to escape and take your family with you in a dangerous situation, you have to have courage to do things like that.
Dear Gabrielle, I like your response to question number 2 because you stated why people have to be brave in those times.
Delete1. It is probably italicized because they haven't actually gone anywhere, but the Germans may have closed her shop since she is a Jew. It also may mean they were sent to a concentration or an extermination camp.
ReplyDelete2. I don't agree because some ordinary people can be courageous and some extraordinary people can be uncourageous like a regular kid being courageous when a (making this up) superhero is uncourageous.
Its a great response, I liked how you involved the two camps that they could be sent to, but like Hayden said, don't address a Jewish person as a Jew. ~Kelly Lee
Delete1. In Chptr. 3, Annemarie discovers that Mrs. Hirsch's button shop has been closed. She questions in her mind, "Where was Mrs. Hirsch"? "The Hirsch family had gone "somewhere". Why do you think the word "somewhere" has been written in italics? What might it signify. Explain.
ReplyDelete1. I think the word "somewhere" is in italics because Annemarie thinks something might be wrong and Mrs. Hirsch could be in danger. Annemarie does not even want to think that the Nazis might have done something horrible like taken them away to a concentration camp or even killed them.
2. Explain.
2. No, I disagree with Annemarie's last thought because there are always times when ordinary people have to be brave, even when it is something tiny. Also, even if there are no situations when people might have to be brave, it is still a great character trait to have.
1. I think "somewhere" is written in italics because Annemarie does not know where they are, but she knows their still in town because Ellen saw them in town. Then she figures out that her shop was closed down by the Nazis because she was Jewish.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree with Annemarie because you could be put in a situation when to live you have to have courage and bravery. She might have to stand up for Ellen because she is Jewish, and she would have to be brave to protect her friend or any other Jewish person.
1.) I think that somewhere means that the family was either at home or out and about in the town that afternoon instead of at the store. It could also mean that she was in danger because of the Nasi soilders thar were in the town from the invasion of the Nasi soilders.
ReplyDelete2.) No, I think that she and other day people should be brave enough to stand up for other people in the town, like how they would die for their king to live and he would keep ruling all of Denmark. ALSO it is important to be brave enough to stand up for not only themselves but also stand up for others.
1. I think somewhere is in italics because Annamarie didn't know where Mrs.Hirsch was at the time.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree with this statement because most of the people who are the most known courageous people are ordinary people who were called to be courageous by the Circumstance's they were put under.
Good response but I think you could have gave more detail on #1 but #2 was great.
Delete1. I think that the word somewhere is in italics because she does not know exactly where Mrs. Hersh is. all Annmarie knows is that she is "somewhere."
ReplyDelete2. When Annmarie says that she "is glad to be an ordinary person who would never be called upon for courage," I disagree because in life your nothing if your never brave. If Annmarie wants to save Ellen and her family from the soldier she will have to be brave. She may have"to be called upon in life for courage" you never know. If she wants to save her king or even her country shell have to be brave.
-Olivia
1. I think, "Somewhere" was written in italics because Annemarie knew that Mrs.Hirsch was somewhere in Denmark but she didn't exactly know where in Denmark.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree with Annemarie because Annemarie even wants to save the Rosens but she cant if she wont step up to the game. If she wont be brave enough to help her friend stay alive, then she wont have that friend. Even if it means to fight a soldier. She has to be able to have courage and bravery. ~Kelly Lee
1.Somewhere was in italics because it was trying to show that Annemarie was thinking about where the Hirsch family could be.
ReplyDelete2.I disagree with Annemarie because even though the Germans occupied Denmark she could still be brave
-Bisola Fakayode
1.Somewhere, you can infer that it is the constraintion camp because the Nazis were using the Jewish people as slaves.
ReplyDelete2.No, I disagree because the Nazis are taking over Denmark and at any time you need to be courageous.
I love your replies but maybe give more detail than you said other than that you rocked it

Question 1: I think the meanin of somethin in italics is to let us know that they aren't were they usually are and the Germans did something like send them to concentration camps.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2: No I disagree because when you live in a world with nazis every where it takes a lot of bravery to not freak out to not get killed or taken away and I think everyone has to be brave.
