RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 8 OF HATCHET, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!  BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 8 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 8, Brian recalls crying in the corner of the dark cave, and it was at that time he learned "the most important rule of survival was that feeling sorry for yourself didn't work".  Explain what this "learning lesson" means.  Give details and support your response.

2.  Brian discovers that the hatchet was the key to it all--fire.  Although Brian has come to this realization, do you think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire?  Yes or NoWhy or Why not?

  1. 1. This lesson means you have to figure out things on your own because when you grow up and move into your own house you can't be crying for your Mom to come. For example Brian was crying in the corner of his shelter saying that this was all too much for me I can't do this anymore so he is going to have to figure some more things out on his own because no one is out there with him right now that he knows of.

2.I don't think it will be easy for Brian because he hasn't built a fire before out in the woods but he has in his house with a lighter and wood but in his situation he doesn't have a lighter but he does have wood I just don't think he realizes that right now

    1. I like what you wrote for question 1&2. Also for # 2 I like how you said what you would use to start a fire because I never thought of it that way.

    2. You did good for #1but I think #2 should be yes because he got some sparks so he could get wood and start building it and it doesn't matter if you use wood and a lighter, he already figured how to get sparks.

  2. 1. I think the lesson is that if you are stranded in the middle of " nowhere " and you just sit around and cry you will get nothing done so your food supply will rot or be consumed by you. You could be attack by a animal because you have let your guard down and possibly die.

    2. I think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire because referring back to chptr. 8 it says that he had made tons of sparks by striking the dark rock so he needs to do is place some sticks and some dry grass where where he thinks the sparks will land and then if the sparks hit the marked areas he will have fire.

    1. Great job and btw the hatchet could break at any time when he's striking the rock so he can't just keep striking it, unless he gets lucky of course.

    2. I like the way you explained why feeling bad for yourself doesn't help and the way you supported your answer.

  3. 1.) This may mean that Brian figures out that their is no-one that can help him while he is in the woods. Also that if he cries, feeling sorry for himself, he may not survive by not focusing on what he needs to do, and as he is growing up people can't help him.

2.)No, I think it will take time for the fire to just to start the fire then even to make it grow will take even longer to make it grow to a good size. Also it will wear him out, so he may not start a fire.

    1. I like how you said for #1 that he might not focus on what he needs to do.

  4. 1. He means that you have to recover from injuries and not be sad
    2. No because it has taken him a long time to get a lot of sparks so it will take him a long time till he can make a fire.

    2. I think you have the point but still need to describe more about the "learning lesson".

On question 2 it didn't take Brian long to get sparks he just didn't hit the hatchet hard the first time.

  5. 1. I think what the lesson is trying to tell us is that when you cry or have self pity, you get nothing done. I think it also means that self pity can never solve your problem but only make it worse. If you cry, nothing is going to happen.

2.I think that it will not be easy for Brian to make a fire because he will need to find a lot of things to make a fire such as wood from trees, and it might not even work at all.

  6. 1. In Chptr. 8, Brian recalls crying in the corner of the dark cave, and it was at that time he learned "the most important rule of survival was that feeling sorry for yourself didn't work". Explain what this "learning lesson" means. Give details and support your response.
The "learning lesson" is that if Brian just sit there and fells sorry for himself he wont get anything done, but if Brian doesn't just sit there and fells sorry for himself and actually tries to accomplish something then he might have a chance of survival.

    2. Brian discovers that the hatchet was the key to it all--fire. Although Brian has come to this realization, do you think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire? Yes or No. Why or Why not?
I think Brian might still have a little trouble making fire even with the hatchet and rock because he will need to find a very flammable object (substance) to catch the fire on so he can make the fire get started and get big.

  7. 1. In Chptr. 8, Brian recalls crying in the corner of the dark cave, and it was at that time he learned "the most important rule of survival was that feeling sorry for yourself didn't work". Explain what this "learning lesson" means. Give details and support your response.
I think that this means that Brian can't cry about things and that he needs to start doing things instead of crying and wishing it wasn't happening. If he grows up and moves out, and one day he got hurt or doesn't know how to do something he has to learn.

    2. Brian discovers that the hatchet was the key to it all--fire. Although Brian has come to this realization, do you think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire? Yes or No. Why or Why not?
I think that it would be easier to build a fire, because he has his hatchet, wood and the shelter which he could strike on with the hatchet and set p some wood so the sparks can fly onto the wood.

    1. I like your number one answer but I don't get the whole growing up thing
I question number two because in the text it says that Brian was already having trouble getting a fire started with the hatchet.

  8. Q1
Brian means if you just sit there and do nothing but crying you can't accomplish any thing.
    Q2
It will not be hard because in chapter 8 it said the hatchet made sparks on the rock, and all he'll need is some dry sticks and grass to make it bigger.

  9. To Rose,
I liked that you said in Question 1 you said that if he cried he could not do anything.

  10. 1. When it say's "the most important rule of survival was that feeling sorry for yourself didn't work" it means that just sitting in the dark and doing NOTHING isn't going to help yourself survive. To me it's saying that you need to get up and do what ever you possibly can to help/ protect yourself until someone comes to rescue you.

    2. I do not think it will be easy because he was trying to do it and he actually said that it WAS hard to make a fire. So I think that he might need to strike it harder but without breaking the hatchet.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. He means that feeling sorry for yourself won't help him survive in the wilderness.

    2. I think both because it said that it made large sparks, meaning that the sparks could make a fire quickly but he kept hitting the hatchet against the rock and if he breaks his hatchet he won't be able to make a fire.

  12. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~1. It means sitting around doesn't help anything or anyone survive in a situation like Brian is right now.

    2. No because he would need more than that; a mound of dry sticks, brush or even a dead animal (because dead animals can burn too). He would also need to strike the flint (yes, flint) much harder (Flint can ignite fire with steel).

  13. 1. Feeling sorry for himself wouldn't work for Brian because he could get destracted by it and not focuse on the imortant things and would decrease Brian's chance for survival.
    2. It would not be easy for Brian to make a fire becaused he is not exprienced in making a fire. Brian is also not strong enough because of the lack of food.

    1. for number 2 what do you mean by Brian was not experienced with making fire? And Brian had lots of food with him (raspberries) and if he needed more he could go on the trail that he took earlier to get more raspberries.

    2. I really liked your answer for number one, but for number two, why would you need experience? Someone could learn from what they saw or what they heard. ~Kelly Lee

  14. 1. I think that if you feel sorry for yourself it lowers you self as steam so its best not feel sorry for your self in the situation Brian is in.

    2. I do think that Brian will be able to make the fire easily because since it said that with the hatchet he was able to make a lot of sparks and he already found dry wood so he probably would be able to make the fire.

  15. 1. Feeling sorry for yourself does not work because when your alone in the wilderness and all you do is cry, your not accomplishing anything. All you are doing when you cry is wasting your time.

    2. I don't think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire because it said right after Brian struck the rock and sparks went flying and immediately after that they died.

  16. 1. Feeling sorry for yourself doesn't help because when you cry it is pointless ,no one hears you , no one to feel sorry for you and a complete waste of time.

2.it wont be easy for Brian because most of his sparks died immediately and even if he did make huge sparks fly into the air he doesn't have any wood to keep them going

  17. 1. In Chptr. 8, Brian recalls crying in the corner of the dark cave, and it was at that time he learned "the most important rule of survival was that feeling sorry for yourself didn't work". Explain what this "learning lesson" means. Give details and support your response. I think it means that sitting crying is not helping your survival situation, so you should take action or help yourself survive until someone comes to help you.

    2. Brian discovers that the hatchet was the key to it all--fire. Although Brian has come to this realization, do you think it will be easy for Brian to make a fire? Yes or No. Why or Why not? I think it could be easy because he has had experience with fire. Also he has already tried and mostly succeeded to make a fire in the cave. So all he has to do is first get some wood and granite from the wall of the cave. Then he has to use the hatchet to make sparks and if one spark lands on the wood there is his fire.

  18. 1.The learning lesson meant that crying is not going to get you anywhere.

2No because there is sand in the cave and you can not build a fire on sand because the sand would put it out.

  19. 1) I think that this learning lesson meant that if you just sit and cry just waiting for someone to help you, doesn't work. In the real world you actually have to work for your earnings. But if you sit and cry you are basically not able to complete anything.

    2) I think no, because you cant just strike a hatchet and make fire, you have to gather wood for making it last longer. If you don't do this then the fire won't last as long. ~Kelly Lee

  20. Question1:The learning lesson was that Bryan figured out feeling sorry for your self gets you nowhere you could cry all day or you could hunt build anything but cry thats what it meant.
Question2:No because i've made fire like that and it takes forever and he doesn't have any tender to light.

  21. 1.I think this lesson means that feeling sorry for yourself doesn't make things better because Brian is still in the cave alone with no one to talk to somewhere in the Canadian forest.

2.I don't think it would be easy for Brian to make a fire because he has got to find the right amount of force to make hot enough sparks to make a fire.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1.I think that i get the lesson because that feeling sorry for yourself doesn't cut it because nothing helps you when you feel sorry for yourself. 2.I think that it will be easy to make a fire because if Brian keeps hitting the rock it will make a fire but it will take some time
