HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 17 OF HATCHET:
1. In Chptr. 17, Brian takes the time to sit back and take in the beauty of his surroundings; the sights, smells, sounds of it all. Brian wondered if he somehow got out of his current situation and returned home, would he go back to living the way he had lived prior to the crash, or would it be just the opposite? In other words, would he view life and his surroundings differently? What are your thoughts? Explain.
2. Brian assesses the damage as a result of the tornado and decides what needs to be done. He studied the problem, again. Sense, he had to use his sense. That's all it took to solve problems--just sense. Explain what Brian means by the red bold printed statement.
1. I think if Brian returned home he would not live the same way because he has been out in the Canadian woods for over a month. He would not be the same because he has learned to make a fire and in the city he can use electricity to start a fire. He has grown stronger by studying his surroundings and knowing what they are. Living out there has changed his whole way of thinking.
ReplyDelete2. "Just sense" means he has to solve his problems. He has to solve them by using his skills based on what he knows on how to fix them and he might even want to use critical thinking.
Great job Camryn I like how in question #2 you referenced Brian using his skills to solve problems.

ReplyDelete1.I think that If Brian got to return home, that he would have to get used to all of the city things like people, cars, his house, and food. He would remember all the things he has done out in the wilderness because he has been their so long and it was a terrifying experience. He would probably never be the same because now he has been hungry, thirsty, and tired but he can not forget to do the things that make him survive but in the city there is no need to work (except if you have a job). for example: You can use money to buy food and water and you need no fire if you have a house but in the wilderness there are no stores or electricity.
ReplyDelete2. I think that ''just sense'' is saying that you do not need toughness or everything you want, you just need sense. In this case, Brian needs to use his ''sense'' to help process what happened and what he needs to do first. For example: Brian used his ''sense'' to build the fire and get food. Yes, I know Brian already figured out how to get fish and how to make fire, but he needed ''sense'' to know to do those things first in order to survive. He would have to have ''sense'' or knowledge to figure these things out in the first place and without ''sense'' he would never have survived.
I like how you said that you don't need toughness but you do need sense. If you have sense you can do a lot more than if you have toughness.
DeleteI love your response but in question number #2 remember he needs to be tough in the head to figure out problems that common sense can't solve but still good response.
DeleteI think he would not think the same because if he went home as it states in the text it says whenever he hears something he is quick to react so if a car where to honk its horn he would hear it and not agnore it and he has learned about you don't need electicity to do anything you just need will power, perseverance, and the right tools including your mind and your patience.
ReplyDeleteJust sense means that to answer any problem you might run into you just need common sense for example if you encounter a bear the first thing that comes to mind is to run and get away but if you think about it the bear could become startled and attack you so you would should just walk away slowly so you don't startle it.
I like how you used an example for q1 when a car honks
Delete1. I think if he did return home he wouldn't live the same way because he says in one of the earlier chapters that he was changed. I also think he would see things differently since he has been in the canadian wilderness for over a month.
ReplyDelete2. I think he means he should think about what he does before he does it and if it doesn't work out, he tries and takes more time to think (like the fire). Also he may mean to use his knowledge to do things like making the raft, making his shelter bigger and blowing on the sparks to make fire.
For number 1 just because hes been in the Canadian wilderness for a long time doesn't mean that he will see things differently.
Delete1.I think that even though Brian is back to square 1 he will get stuff done faster then when he started because he already has the knowledge to do what he has already done, he just has to do it again but it should be easy because he knows how to do everything. This will also make him think differently because whatever he does he might of had some flaws so his second time he might be able to do it better.
ReplyDelete2. When Brian says "That's all it took to solve problems--just sense" he means that sometimes some things are confusing but sometimes those confusing things can be solved with common sense.
I love your first reply but your second is not as detailed. WHY?
DeleteI liked that you used knowledge in question 1.
DeleteI think that Bryan would be different and be more where of his surroundings for instance he sensed a moose charging him from the back or hearing a tornado.
ReplyDeleteBryan means that he doesn't need to think big he just needs to think about his current problem not all the problems.
Good job I like how you made an example of how Brian would be different but I think you should explain why you think what you think more.

1. My thoughts are that Brian won't look at life the same. I think this because of all the things he is going through right now. He will do more things with his mom and make the most of life in the city because the next time he gets on a plane it might crash and he would be back in the woods alone. He will be grateful for everything he us provided when he goes back to the city because he didn't have that in the wilderness and he had to do things on his own these things may include: heat he doesn't have to make, food he doesn't have to hunt for, a house, and maybe video games.
ReplyDelete2. "Just sense" means he has to to use his brain and the knowledge he has of the forest to help him solve his problems. By now this shouldn't be very hard considering he is tough in the head and can think critically the position he is in now.
I like in your response how you said he will make most of life because you never know if you might crash again
Delete1. I think Brian will view his surroundings differently because he knows that hunger can be very intense and that you may never see food again. He also, might take in his surroundings differently like look at everything he hears because you can never know when an animal with vicious teeth could be following you.
ReplyDelete2. I think Brian means that when you are trying to solve a problem you have to look at every part of the problem and use your common sense on how things work. Without using common sense, it is not easy to accomplish tasks and solve problems. You might be able to complete the tasks and solve the problem, but it might not be the quickest way.

ReplyDelete1.I wouldn't see things the same. Brian is now having to survive on his own with nothing but resources. If I was back to livinng the same i wouldn't waste water milk food or anything because their are people who have to live like that still. Also who knows when he is going back to his moms house he might crash and have to survive again so I would make the most out of everything.
2. Brian means that you have to stay focused on the problem at hand and use sense. If you don't use common sense then you could make a mistake which could answer the question of if Brian survives or not. Brian doesn't know if one choice will kill him like just walking he , he could choose a path which was a shortcut but the path had wolves on it , Brian doesn't know that there will be wolves he just has to use common sense.
For number 1 you are saying what you think not what you think Brian would do otherwise GREAT JOB

1. In Chptr. 17, Brian takes the time to sit back and take in the beauty of his surroundings; the sights, smells, sounds of it all. Brian wondered if he someway he had lived prior to the crash, or would it be just the opposite? In other words, would he view life and his surroundings differently? What are your thoughts? Explain
ReplyDeleteI think that Brian would still like fishing, hunting and camping (as he would call it at his house) because if when ever he reaches his goal like making the bow and catching fish he starts to fell good about himself and he probably likes that feeling. I also think that Brian would be viewing his surroundings a little different only because he knows that what ever he is doing is not life threatening.
2. Brian assesses the damage as a result of the tornado and decides what needs to be done. He studied the problem, again. Sense, he had to use his sense. That's all it took to solve problems--just sense. Explain what Brian means by the red bold printed statement.
I think that what Brian meant by the bold sentence is that the situation he was in was not as hard as he thought he just needed to think through the situation.

1.) I think Brian will view his surroundings differently, because he has changed so he will take things more seriously when he works and when he runs into animals in the woods, because he has learned how to make a spear, a bow and a way to trap some fish in a seperatly. Also he knows how to create fire.
ReplyDelete2.) I think it means that he only needs to use his common sense to figure out what to do. Also he can figure out how to redo things using his sense and to solve how he can rebuild and repair his "home".
1) I think Brian will live life a little differently because he is more mature and has better common sense and now knows how to solve problems on his own. Also now Brian has survived a plane crash, tornado, a moose attack and living on his own in the Canadian wilderness so he has learned and experienced a lot.
ReplyDelete2) I think the bold words: "That's all it took to solve problems--just sense" mean that Brian was trying to say that he has to use his common sense to solve problems the right way.
I think that Brian's life would go back to normal after a few months when the memories of his life in the wilderness fade and old habits begin to reappear. I also think that Brian will be forever changed by his new found resourcefulness, sensible thinking and tough hope.
ReplyDeleteI think that Brian means sensible thinking is the key to survival, not power, not strength, not even hope, but with a sensible mindset and hard work you survive in the hardest of conditions.
Dear Taylor, I thought that Brian's life would never go back to normal but you could be right, people do tend to like to take the easy way.
Delete1.)I think that Brian sees his view of life and his surroundings differently, because after the tornado hit the area, it messed up the trees and all of his surroundings . Therefore his surroundings are ripped apart because most of it is damaged. The view of his life is different, because his view gave him nothing, because after the tornado, it left him back to nothing, were he was in the first place.
ReplyDelete2.)I think what Brian means by saying ''That's all it took to solve problems--just sense'' means that he understands and can solve his problems. Making sense will lead to where the main part of the problem is. Making sense will be able to solve the main part of the problem and thats the key that unlocks the way to make the right answer.
1) If Brian was able go back to how he used to live, I do think he will view his life differently. He will adapt to the city and " get back into the groove of things" but he will view the people differently because people in the city take things for granted. For example, people take for granted that food will always be there. Another example people take work for granted that they have to do too much of it. Brian will look things as chores. That is better than live in the wilderness and having to do all that work.
ReplyDelete2) What Brian means by " That's all it took to solve problems -- just sense" is that he has to use his sense to figure stuff out. Sense is your knowledge and common sense. So he has to use his knowledge to figure out stuff. If he doesn't have knowledge in some stuff he has to use trial and error to figure things out.. What trial and error means that he can't rush in to stuff . You have to look into the problem to figure it out. An example is the fire and that he used many stuff but they didn't work so he had to keep trying new things.
In #1I like the way you say people in the city take things for granted. I like the way you said food would always be there.
Delete1. I think that if Brian returned home he would not be the same person he was when he first lived in the city he would be the "new Brian". He would now have a new appreciation for what he has and what he has to do to get that(he does not have to do any work or things like that do earn his food) also his family and friends. He also might like doing the things he did when he was trying to survive like hunting, fishing with a spear and bow and arrows, and "camping" because he probably likes it when he does something by himself for himself. He also might miss being in the woods for a change from his city life. He might miss the Canadian woods not being noisy like the city(car horns\cars, people, etc).
ReplyDelete2. That's all it took to solve problems--just sense means that he need some sort of way to get through this survival situation using what he knows or what he might predict will happen next because he is now more aware because of what happened with the tornado and moose because it caught him off guard. He needed to think through the situation and has to be tough in the head to figure it out.~Cami Adams
1. Yes, I think that Brian will view his life and surroundings differently because he has actually been changed by this experience. Before the plane left him, Brian was depending on getting rescued and was not used to having to hunt or work for his food to survive. After the plane left him, Brian was intent on one thing and one thing only, to survive. Also, at first, he only heard things and did not really listen to them, and after he became super attentive.
ReplyDelete2. What Brian means by " that's all it took to solve problems -- just sense " is that no matter what the problem is, if you take a second and just think and use sense, then you will solve the problem instead of needing experience or muscle. For example, when Brian went hunting for the fool birds he could not see them because their feathers blended in with their surroundings. When he really thought about it and used his sense he thought to look for their shape and not what he had been looking for, which was their feathers. He had not had experienced hunting so had to use his good sense.
GOOD JOB *_* I liked how you went through and added all the details.
Delete#1. I think that if Brian goes back to his home then he would not be the same person because he's been living in the wilderness for over a month and he's so used to living in the wilderness and getting his own resources but IF he gets his normal routine back he'll be fine.
ReplyDelete#2. That's all it took to solve problems--just sense. I think this means that he needs to use all his knowledge and try to think so that he can solve the problem or other situation and he also needs to be ''tough in the head'' meaning he needs to think really deep and think really really hard.
1. I think his way of life would change because he was used to surviving in the wilderness and will have to adapt to his new way of living like he did Egan he first entered the survival situation.
ReplyDelete2. It means that if you just use common sense it could solve your problem like when the skunk came he could just think I shouldn't distress it.
1. Brian would not live the same way because life in the wilderness has changed Brian because he sees and smells differently and he notices things more than other people would. Brian would also have sharper senses than other people his age.
ReplyDelete2. He means that Brian needs to be smart and focus on what he wants to do and use his common sense and what he wants to do wont be so hard.
- Bisola Fakayode
1. I dont think Brian would live the same way because he has been living in the wilderness for over a month now, he should be accustomed to this life style. He may remember some of the things from the city but he would probably have to get back into the habit of his city life. He SEES and SMELLS differently. He is a NEW Brian.
ReplyDelete2.That's all it took to solve problems--just sense. This meant that he needs to use common sense. He needs to know what to do immediately and to know if it is right, or wrong. Like when the skunk came in, he didnt over stress it, but he had a part of his mind saying that he needs to be careful about the skunk, and he needed to act immediately. ~Kelly Lee
I love all your response for both questions. I don't think it could have got any better than that.
Delete1.It might be because he has all the things he has burgers, fries, steaks, ect. then when he was the "old Brian"he took things for granted now as the " new Brian"he doesn't take thing for granted and he sees the beauty in things like the lake and woods.
ReplyDelete2.He meant that since is all he needed because if you use the since that you had already from the time before which brings in comman since which saids to do what you did before because it was all the right way or thing to do but he just wasn't ready for a tornado to hit his "home".
1. My thoughts are that Brian would live a new way when, or if he every goes back to the city. He may go back to doing some things the way he did, but I think most things would be different. He would see things he probably didn't notice before back in the city. He would smell new things that were always there, but he never noticed the smell.
ReplyDelete2. When Brian thinks that's all it took to solve problems--just sense it means that he has to focus and use his brain and just think about what to do and do it. Not stress about and do something that won't help you. This is what Brian's thought meant.
I think he will see things differently because before the tornado, he had to use what he had and made the best of everything he had, but know he knows how to do things so he can finally look at things(his surroundings) differently.
ReplyDeleteWhat he means is he has to make himself believe that what he is doing is what needs to be done and that he has to just do what is sensible.
ReplyDeleteGood one on the 1st one Nicholas but for #2 you could have had a little bit more
Delete1. I think Brian would because he has lived over a month in the wilderness and knows how to survive out in the wild and he is used to it now. Like Brian had said before, he thinks, he hears differently. He would think differently and he had probably forgot how it was like back at home.
ReplyDelete2. I think Brian means that he could sense how to deal with problems, like he could sense how to make his tools the first time he had made them. He used his sense to know how to catch fish, and know how to hunt.
1. I think it wouldn't change because he would be in the city again with his mom and he wouldn't see the beauty of nature but with his dad he would see nature again. 2. You have to sense the problem and see the answer.
ReplyDelete1. I think Brian means that survival would be easier because he wouldn't have to hunt, make fire and wouldn't have to get wood for the fire.
