RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 11, NUMBER THE STARS, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2016

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE!   BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 11 OF NUMBER THE STARS:

1.  In Chptr. 11, it was time to begin to move the Jewish people to safety.  After wrapping the baby into Kirsti's red sweater, Peter reached into his pocket and took out a bottle, containing a dropper.  He questioned the mother of the baby as to the little baby's weight.  Peter felt just a few drops would be enough and assured the parents that it had no taste and that the baby wouldn't notice.  What was in the bottle and dropper that Peter placed into the baby's mouth?  What clues did you use to determine your answer?  Why do you think Peter felt the need to use what was in the dropper on the baby?  Explain and be specific.

2. In Chptr. 11, the theme of pride is mentioned.  Annemarie thinks back of the time when Mrs. Rosen's hair was neatly combed and covered, the lighting of the Sabbath candles, and Mr. Rosen grading papers in his living room chair.  She remembered Ellen in the school play, moving confidently across the school stage, her gestures sure, her voice clear.  Now, in this current moment, the Rosens were frightened and not sure of their future.  But their shoulders were as straight as they had been in the past:  on the stage, at the Sabbath table.  So there were other sources, too, of pride, and they had not left everything behind.  Explain what the last two bold-printed (red) sentences mean.  Be specific.

  1. I think that some sleep medicine was in the bottle dropper. I know this because in the text Peter and the baby's mother were talking about how they couldn't risk the baby waking up and crying during the night trip to safety. I think that Peter needed to use the stuff on the baby to stop any noises that might alert the Nazis and blow their cover.

I think that the quotes mean that memories of happier times, times where Annemarie and Ellen were proud, can bring feelings of pride. Also, the mention of the Sabbath table leads me to think that being Jewish might make Ellen proud and cause the felling of pride.

  2. 1. I that that it could have been some sleep medicine. I know that because Peter said that he couldn't have the baby crying when the people were moving to safety. Also that mother of the baby said she already sleeps all night. Peter had to use that stuff because if the baby started crying while they were moving it would have got the Nazi's attention.

    2. I think that it means that they were being brave. Before Uncle Henrik had a talk with Annemarie that had to do with bravery, so I think the quote means that they were trying not to think about what bad things could happen and instead they were going to be brave.

  3. I think that the stuff in the bottle dropper was a medicine that makes/helps you sleep. The information from the text that supports my answer is the woman with the baby said " She always sleeps at night. Please, she doesn't need it, I promise. She won't cry." That proved to me that the lady didn't want the her baby to drink the medicine and I know that because she said her baby wouldn't cry and that her baby slept at night. I think Peter felt the need to use the dropper because he didn't want to take any risks of the Nazis finding out their escape plan. If the baby cried than that would blow their WHOLE cover.

    2. It means that now at this horrible time the Rosens were trying to be confident and ACT like they were prepared for ANYTHING even though they weren't on the inside. The looked as if it were the happy times with pride. Emily Richards

#1. I think that in the dropper there was sleep medicine, I know because Peter said he couldn't have the baby waking up and making noises it also says that Rachel yawned and you usually yawn when you are tired. Peter felt the need because Rachel could make a noise when there could be a Nazi on the boat.

    2. In Chptr. 11, the theme of pride is mentioned. #2. I think that it's saying how before the Nazis came, and the times where they were happy. They don't have those times since the Nazi invation.

  5. 1. At first I thought the dropper contained a poison to kill the baby peacefully but then the mother didn't seem THAT upset so I decided it was probably some kind of sleeping drink (IDK what its called) to make the baby sleep just like the stuff they give you during surgery. The mother was probably reluctant because an overdose could probably kill the baby, she tried to stop Peter by saying she slept soundly but it didn't work, after the quote "sleep soundly" that's what made me KNOW it was a sleeping substance because they would need the baby to not make any sounds so they weren't caught.

I think "But their shoulders were as straight as they had been in the past: on the stage, at the Sabbath table. So there were other sources, too, of pride, and they had not left everything behind." means that they were not scared and they have pride like they did before everything was taken over by the Nazis, to prove that he Nazis didn't affect them and they wouldn't let the Nazis scare them.

  6. 1. I think the bottle and dropper were a kind of medicine to let you go to sleep because on pg. 90 the wife said “No, please she always sleeps at night. Please she won’t cry.” I think they said this because if the baby did cry the German soldiers might notice them.

    2. It used to be easy to have pride but now with the times like this it was harder to take pride when you are leaving everything behind and you know that if you mess anything up it could possibly lead to your death.

  7. 1) I think what was inside the bottle dropper is some sleep medicine because in the text Peter said " we cant take a chance". What he means by this is that he had to use this "stuff" because if the baby cries and wakes up they cant take a chance of the Nazis hearing it; they could get suspicious.
    2) What the quote means is that in the past they were proud people and had good clothing and good jobs. Mr. Rosen, "studying his thick books, correcting papers", Mrs. Rosen, "her hair neatly combed and covered, lighting the Sabbath candle". But now they are poor, have no jobs and have to wear other peoples clothes. Their shoulders should be down but they are still straight up and still have pride in themselves. They are going to fight back and still try to escape. They are still pride to be a Jew.

  8. 1. I think that there was some medicine to make you sleep in the bottle dropper. Peter might give the baby a few drops so that the baby will be quiet and will not cry while they are trying to escape. If the baby did cry or make noise then the Nazis might overhear it and go to where the noise is coming from, and see the people trying to escape and that would ruin the whole entire plan.

    2. I think that the quote means that the Rosens were Proud of themselves because of the way that things played out, Ellen's parents both have good jobs and Ellen is great at acting. Also Peter might have told Ellen's parents what the plan was and they told Ellen, then they would all know what's going on and still have hope that they will make it to Sweden.

  9. 1. I think there was a medicine that would make the baby sleep. Clues I used to determine my answer are when the baby's mom said the baby always sleeps through the night and doesn't cry. Peter felt the need to use what was in the dropper on the baby because he just wanted to be sure the baby wouldn't cry, or make any noise. If the baby did make any noise it would mess up the plan to escape to Sweden without the Nazis catching them.

    2. I think it means that the Rosens were proud that they have gotten this far in the plan and they weren't going to let the Nazis scare them. They are being brave because they are not being scared of what bad things might happen.

  10. 1. What was in the bottle was sleeping medicine because Peter asked about Rachel's weight so he knows how much to give her and why Peter did that was because they couldn't take any chances of the baby crying. 2. It means that pride is an inner strength that can be found any time that doesn't depend on an object or place

  11. 1) I think that in he dropper that Peter was going to give the baby was some type of sleeping medication. I figured it out because Peter asked about the baby's weight and the mother of Rachel said that she would sleep the whole time, but Peter said that there couldn't be any chances taken of the baby waking up and being a distraction or a problem along the way of the journey to Sweden.

    2) I think that the last two sentences mean't that the Rosens were trying to be confident and have pride and they were showing that by acting casual and having straight shoulders and pretending that there wasn't anything wrong but really I think that they were scared because they weren't sure about what was going to happen next.

I think sleeping medicine was in the bottle. The text talks about how the baby is a sound sleeper well Peter doesn't want to take any chances of getting caught if the baby does begin to cry. Peter felt the need to use sleeping medicine because the noise of a baby crying would alert Nazi soldiers which would ruin the plan.

      2. I think these sentences mean that for a while they were not proud of who they were because of the Nazis and everything the enemy had been saying about Jewish people. This pride I think was coming back because this Family and many many other families had come so far to survive that they should be and have every right to be proud.

  12. 1.) I think that Peter had sleeping medication so the baby would not cry or wake on the way to the boat. They did not want to be spotted or herd by the Nasi soilders. Also the baby needed to sleep because they had to walk in the open roadside from time to time.

2.) I think that it means that they had confidence in the fact that they might be able to escape on Uncle Henrik's boat and get to Sweden and be free of the Nasi soilders in Denmark.

  13. 1. I think that some sort of sleep syrup was in the bottle that Peter gave the infant. I found my answer because the mother said that the baby slept through the night, implying that the liquid was something to make the baby sleep. I think Peter felt the need to give the sleep syrup to the baby because if they are going to run away to Sweden it would be unsafe to have a crying baby attracting attention.

    2. What the bold letters mean is that even though there was such horrible discrimination of the Jewish people, the Rosens did not let that change who they were and still knew that they were worth as much as any other human being. So instead of leaving all their pride behind they brought it with them.

  14. 1. I think what Peter gave the baby was sleep medicine because the mother hesitated at first but Peter said they couldn't risk the baby waking up and making noise so he made sure it wouldn't wake up by giving it the sleep medicine.

    2. I think Annemarie is referring to happier times when she remembers the Rosens showing pride but now they seem to be scared but are still showing pride but in a different way.

  15. 1. A)I think there was a kind of formula in the bottle that would not let the baby wake up in a certain time period. B)One clue I used was on page 90 when the mother says the baby wouldn't cry, but Peter said they could not take any chances. C)I think Peter felt the need to give the baby the stuff in the bottle because if they were to loud they could get captured by the Nazis.

    2. I think, they have pride because of their upbringing. Meaning, that they know they are doing the right thing for themselves and the other Jewish people. They show courage over their hidden fears.

  16. 1.The dropper was something to make the baby(Rachel) to sleep for a long period of time. Peter wanted to know the baby's weight because if a person takes to much of a medicine it can speed up your heart rate which, will eventually, lead to death. I know this because Rachel's mother said she always slept through the night. But just in case he gave the tired baby the medicine so the plan would not fall through and the Nazis find them.
2.This means its hard to lose your own pride. Its not as easy to do as a pencil. Even though to Annemarie it appears that the Rosen’s look full of pride, and brave, on the inside there probably terrified. They are ,leaving everything but, themselves and there own pride.

  17. 1. I think there was sleeping medicine in the bottle because the baby went to sleep when she got her drops and he thought she needed it because she might whine and get them all killed.

    2. What the bold sentence means is that the Rosens were leaving there home and everything they knew behind but they took there pride with them.

  18. !. I think that in the dropper that peter had it contained some kind of fluids to make the baby fall asleep. They did not want the baby to cry and if she was asleep she would not cry.

    2. I think that the bold sentences mean that the Rosens have not lost their pride, but have gained some different sources of pride. They were leaving behind everything, but they have to bring their pride in order to stay alive during the escape.
