HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 18 OF HATCHET:
1. In Chptr. 18 when Brian dropped the hatchet into the lake, he said, "That was the kind of thing I would have done before," he said to the lake, to the sky, to the trees. "When I came here--I would have done that. Not now. Not now..." Explain why Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness.
2. In Chptr. 18, as Brian made his way into the plane, Gary Paulsen writes that Brian "eeled" in through the cables and formers. How does the quoted word help you visualize what Brian is doing. Explain in detail.
1) Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet before because he wasn't as strong and he wasn't as careful as he is now. But before he would have dropped it because he wouldn't be as careful or have the patience to be careful in the situation that he is in now.
ReplyDelete2) When Gary Paulsen uses the word "eeled" it helps you understand that Brian is moving around slowly, but moving his entire body from side to side like an eel, to get through the hole that Brian made in the plane with his hatchet.
I like how you said "he wasn't as strong" but now he is more careful
DeleteI liked how you said he did not have patience before.
Delete1. He is so convinced because when he first came he had no experience in the woods what so ever because he is a city boy,so he had no experience because in the city lets say he had the $20 in the city he can go get food go to the store etc and in the wilderness it isn't worth really anything . Also he kept on making mistakes throughout the chapters.
ReplyDelete2. I think when it means he "eeled" means that he slipped right through it because eels normally can slip through about anything because there so skinny. When Brian went through the plane I think it was big enough and wide enough for him to fit through it
Great job Camryn I like how you said that eels can just slip through things.
DeleteGOOD JOB Camryn I liked your response and that you gave an example for the first question. '_'
Deletei love your response. you nailed it and did awesome. ie specially loved number 1.
DeleteDear Camryn, I liked your response to question number 1 because you said that Brian had no experience in the woods when he first arrived in the wilderness.
Delete1) Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet before because he wasn't has strong or careful as he was before. But now Brian is more stronger and careful than he was before. Also Brian has more patience and knowledge now so he needs to use it in this situation and it also leads back to Brian's common sense to be careful and have patience.
ReplyDelete2) In Hatchet Gary Paulsen uses the word "eeled". I think this helps me visualize that Brian is moving his body side to side like an eel to move through the hole that he made in the plane to get the survival pack easily than just going straight through the hole.
You already did a response. Why did you do another?
Delete#1. Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness because Brian has changed he was a city boy and now he has a little bit of wilderness in him. He has better knowledge than before and knows how to build a fire, catch fish and foolbirds. Brain would not have ben as careful as he is now he always checks to see if he still has his hatchet and his hatchet was everything Brian needed to do all these things. Brian basically wasn't careful as he is right now.
ReplyDelete#2. Gary Paulsen writes that Brian "eeled " in through the cables and formers the quoted word help you visualize what Brian is doing because its letting you picture what is happening and that is very helpful to because the reader doesn't know what the writer is thinking.
I like in your q. 1 how you put that Brian is more clumsy then he is now.
DeleteBrian is so convinced that he would have dropped when he first got there because if he had dropped it when he got there he would not have done all of the things he had done now or he would have done them without the hatchet and would never have to drop it when he needed it the most when he was trying to open the plane.
ReplyDeleteWhen Gary Paulsen writes that brian eeled between the cables it makes me think about it as if he had moved like a eel would in the water by moving side to side squeezing through them like a eel would do when it hides from the predators that try to eat it.
Good job i like how you said that he could move like an eel.
Delete1. Brian was so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet in the lake when he first arrived in the wilderness because when he first arrived he was clumsy, weak, confused, sad and lonely; but now Brian is skillful, strong, knowledgably, somewhat happy with himself and still lonely, but doesn't think about it anymore. (Brian is different then when he first came into the wilderness)
ReplyDelete2. When Gary Paulson writes Brian "eeled" through the cables, It helps me visualize how Brian must have crawled and squirmed to get through the cables. What makes the reader think this is because an eel slithers around (specifically in water). What I did was I pulled out the base word (eel) and realized the connection of how Brian might have been squirming through the cables to get in the plane like an eel would slither into a tight space.
1. Brian is so convinced that he would ave dropped his hatchet when he first got their because he had no experience with the wilderness and how hard it is to do things. He changed throughout the chapters, and he even said he did. He was so convinced that he would drop it before because he dropped it now and he has a lot more experiences with the wilderness now than he did before.
ReplyDelete2. I think that when the author added "eeled" you can visualize a eel swiftly moving through the water. He was moving carefully and cautiously through the cables. He was swiveling through them and not touching them.
I liked that you said what eeled means.
Delete1. Brian was so convinced that he would have dropped it earlier because he was not using sense he was clumsy and wasn't paying attention but now he is the new Brian.
ReplyDelete2. The word eeled was used to tell the reader that he wiggled and squeezed through the cables of the plane to get the survival pack.
I think number 2 is an awesome unwires but in number 1 I think there could have been more thought and description.
Delete1) Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet into the water when he first arrived in the wilderness because he had no knowledge of how to survive in the woods in the first place, he had to learn stuff. He would also have dropped it because he thought it would be alot use and he wouldn't have been so cautious, but now he has needed it to do many important stuff. In the past he was careless and reckless. He didn't stop to think about what items meant. Now Brian has seen the importance of stuff. An example is when he was tearing the aluminum from the plane he kept it because he knew it was useful. Before he would have thrown it into the lake. Having to survive has made himself think differently.
ReplyDelete2) What the author means by " eeled" is that you are squirming around like a eel trying to fit into something. When I read that I think of Brian squirming around trying to get through the cables. I picture an eel swimming and its body moving back and forth.
I like your answer for number 1 and 2.
Delete1.He is convenienced that he would have done that when he came because then he was the old Brian and now he is the new Brian.
ReplyDelete2.We can visualize that he is weaving around the cables and formers because a eel weaves though and around things and eel is the base word in eeled.
1.) At first Brian did not care for the hatchet his mom gave him, and he did not know how it would help in the wild but now it means everything to him, how he gets all things he needs. Also he needs it to start fire, no fire means no cooked meat, no heat and other things. The hatchet gives him tools, like a bow, a spear and a weapon itself.
ReplyDelete2.) It means that Brian had to swim like an eel, swerving back and forth, so he could squeeze into the plane. Also he had to swim that way because going straight did not work for him as he went around in the "L" shaped lake.
I like how you mentioned the beginning of the book GOOD JOB
Delete~Malachi Etoniru
Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he just crashed the plane because he was still a city boy, so he was careless and took things for granted, he thought he wouldn't do it now because he was smarter, more careful, and used everything he had to his best advantage.
ReplyDeleteThis quote makes me imagine Brian as an eel, squirming and squeezing to get around
the wires.
I like how you were bringing back details about one of the earlier chapters about him being a "city boy" and how you put a lot of details into your explaining about how Brian has changed.
DeleteTaylor,
DeleteI really like how you said that he was a city boy at first and took things for granted and then you said he grew to be smarter and more careful in the wild. You really put alot of thought into this!
1. Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet because he was clumsy, weak and dizzy so he could have dropped it in the sand. He also could have dropped it when he crashed in the lake because he hit the water so hard and that could have made him drop it.
ReplyDelete2. I think what he means by "eeled" is to swim underwater, or slide (on the ground), side to side because an eel slithers underwater, and eels are also slim so they can fit in very small spaces so they can build their "houses" in the narrow spaces so they can hide in there.
1. Brian was convinced that he would have dropped the Hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness because, when he first arrived he was much more careless and made many mistakes. One of the mistakes that Brian made was when he did not build his shelter well because he was thoughtless and lazy. As a result, a skunk got in, took his eggs and blinded him. Now, Brian knows that if he is lazy and thoughtless there will be consequences.
ReplyDelete2. Stating that Brian eeled his way through the cables and formers helps me visualize what Brian was doing because eels are slippery and weave and glide through things. Stating that Brian eeled his way through shows that Brian weaved and glided through all the cables and formers, like and eel would.
. In Chptr. 18 when Brian dropped the hatchet into the lake, he said, "That was the kind of thing I would have done before," he said to the lake, to the sky, to the trees. "When I came here--I would have don't that. Not now. Not now..." Explain why Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness.
ReplyDeleteI think that Brian would of dropped the hatchet when he got there because Brian was then he did not be as careful of what he did when he got there but was about a week after.
2. In Chptr. 18, as Brian made his way into the plane, Gary Paulsen writes that Brian "eeled" in through the cables and formers. How does the quoted word help you visualize what Brian is doing. Explain in detail.
I think that it helps me visualize what Brian was doing because eels wiggle all around and stuff like that when they swim so it probably means that Brian was wiggling through the cables
~Malachi Etoniru
Question 1: What Brian means is that and while he was "Old Brian" he was inexperienced and would have dropped the hatchet.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2: The quoted words tell us that Brian slid into the plane, through the cables like a eel.
1. Brian thought that he would have dropped the hatchet in the beginning because he wasnt aware of his surronings like he is now and was clumsy.
ReplyDelete2. It means that Brian was moving like an eel (slithers like a snake but in water) to get through the cable.
1. He would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived because Brian was so inexperieced and had not been in a situation like this before and wouldn't have known the hatchet was the key "to it all" the key to survival.
ReplyDelete2. "Eeled" means that Brian is weaving through the cables to get to the survival pack because in the text it said Brian wiggled and pulled which means about the same thing as weaving through cables.
Hunter Colson
1. I think he thought that because back then he was a different Brian and was much more clumsier and made lots of mistakes and at that time he thought his hatchet wasn't so important so he would think he wouldn't need it.
ReplyDelete2. I think it tells you that he slithered or squeezed because an eel slithers or squeezes when it moves through small openings.
Brian is convinced that he would of dropped the hatchet when he got there because, before he got tough and "smarter", he was careless, clueless and clumsy. He almost didn't have any idea what he was doing. He was the old Brian, the city boy.
ReplyDelete"Eeled" means that Brian slithered, squeezed and or sliding through the cables to get the survival pack. If the the reader visualizes Brian as an eel, ( eels are in the water ) it could kind of help them. Even if the reader thought if Brian did some of the things eels did, it could still help. ~Kelly Lee
I like how in the first question you said he was the old Brian, the city boy=) ~ Cami Adams
Delete1) Brian is so convinced that he would have dropped the hatchet when he first arrived in the wilderness because he was the "old Brian" and now he is more in control of what he is trying to do to help himself survive. He is more confident in his strength now than he was so he would not drop something so important to his survival because like he said that hatchet was all he had left and that was the main source of his survival. He is now more used to being physical and fighting for your life your weapons become more valuable in survival.
ReplyDelete2) When Gary Paulsen says Brian "eeled" through the cables and formers means he is relating how Brian is weaving through the cables to how a eel slithers in the water. He is moving back and forth without using his elbows and knees to get through the cables and formers to the other side of the plane to get the survival pack. ~ Cami Adams
He would have dropped it because at first he didn't think it was important to his survival as it was to him know because without the hatchet he would not have a fire, weapons or food because unless he had tools he would not have killed fish or foolbirds. Plus without the fire he would have not gotten the eggs.
ReplyDeleteI meant "now" not "know"
DeleteBased on what the author said how he "slithered" through, I think that he squirmed through it like an snake because as it says the sentence because you can see in your mind that squirmed, most of the time you think of a snake because it means to move in a wavy direction.
ReplyDelete1. Brian thinks that he would have dropped the hatchet before because he could have easily dropped it when the plane crashed or lost it trying to get out of the water. It would have been better for him if he lost it in the first place because he would be attached to it that much.
ReplyDelete2. When the author Gary Paulsen said Brian ''eeled'' through the wires and cables, I think he is saying that Brian was making his way slowly into the plane by twisting and turning and moving wires around.
1.)I think Brian means by saying ''I would have dropped the hatchet in the first place'' means that the old Brian would have made that mistake. The new Brian has grown stronger and he would have not made that mistake.
ReplyDelete2.)When Gary Paulsen said that Brian ''eeled'' his way through the cables and wires, it means that he was floping, twisting, crawling, and slithering his way through the cables and wires, like how an eel moves.
