RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 7, HATCHET, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2015

HELLO, FABULOUS FIFTH GRADE! BELOW ARE YOUR RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR CHPTR. 7 OF HATCHET:

1.  In Chptr. 7, Brian does not like what he sees as he saw his reflection in the water.  "Ugly; very, very ugly" he thought.  He slaps the water with his hand to destroy the mirror.  Explain what is meant by Brian trying to destroy the mirror.  Be specific.

2.  In Chptr. 7, Brian encounters a bear.  Yet, the bear causes him no harm.  Regardless, the encounter is very much still in Brian's thoughts.  As darkness came into his shelter, Brian took the hatchet out of his belt, putting it by his head and holding the handle.  Why do you think Brian chose to keep the hatchet, for the very first time, close to him.  Explain.

    2. I think Brian chose to keep his hatchet by him because if something or maybe even someone tried to hurt him in any type of way he could use his hatchet to protect him.

  6. 1. What I think Brian meant by saying he was trying to destroy the mirror is when you look kin the water you see your reflection so was saying that he was slapping the water to make the reflection go away which is like breaking a mirror.

    2. Why I think that Brian kept the hatchet close for the first time then is because he saw a bear which could of done him harm so now that he knew for a fact that their were dangerous animals in those woods he kept the hatchet close in case something attacked him he would have protection.

When Brian "destroyed the mirror" he splashed away the water and blocked the reflection. Brian "destroyed the mirror" because he didn't like that his face was roughed up and hurt.

    2. In Chptr. 7, Brian encounters a bear. Yet, the bear causes him no harm. Regardless, the encounter is very much still in Brian's thoughts. I think Brian chose to keep the hatchet, for the very first time, close to him because he is scared the bear might come back and try to hurt him, even if the bear had no intentions on hurting him the firs time Brian doesn't want to take a chance.

  8. #1 I think that he slaps the water to destroy the mirror because in the book it says he was dirty, bitten, hurt, and his hair was all matted up,, his forehead he had a cut that healed but his hair had blood and a scab.

#2 I think that Brian kept the hatchet close to him because he was scared and thought that there were animals outside of the shelter.

  9. 1. I think that when he ''destroyed'' the mirror it means that he thought of himself as ugly with all of the dirt and cuts that has happened to him in the wild and in the plane crash. What i think he did was he splashed the water to make the image un-clear.

2.I think that the reason Brian chose to keep his hatchet close because he was scared of what other things may be out in the wild that could hurt or even may kill him

  10. 1. I think Brian was frustrated and he splashed the ''mirror'' o he would only see the ripples and not himself and the mirror would be the water because when you look in it you would see your reflection.
    2. I think Brian slept with the hatchet close to him because since he had seen the bear there might be other wild animals and Brian could defend himself with the hatchet.

  11. 1.) When Brian hit the water to make the water, I think he dd not like how he looked with all the bug bites on his body so by hitting the water he attempted to make the still water move so he could no longer see his reflection in the water as he was trying to wash off all dirt off his body, sense he was cut, bleeding, bitten up and the blood was in his hair.

2.) I think Brian keep his hatchet next to him because of when he ran into the bear, and it was on his mind when he got to his home/shelter. Also he knows that any animal could enter his shelter or tear the sticks and leafs off of the outer part.

  13. 1. What is meant by Brian trying to destroy the mirror is that Brian thought he was very ugly. He was cut, bruised and, so he wanted to destroy the mirror, which was actually his reflection in the water. So to make his go away so he slapped the water.

    2. I think that Brian chose to keep the hatchet close for the very first time because he found out there was dangerous things that lived in the woods and just because the bear did not hurt him does not mean other things won't.

  14. 1) When Brian hit the water to destroy the "mirror", I think what this meant was that he was trying to cause the water to not reflect Brian's face on the surface of the lake. Or he wanted to do this because he didn't like his reflection at the moment with all the scars, cuts and bites.

    2) I think Brian wanted to keep his hatchet closer to him after the bear encounter, because just in case if anything happens he will have it ready to use. Also if a animal come into his shelter, he would be able to scare it off or attack it. ~Kelly Lee

  16. 1. When it says that he slaps the water with his hand to destroy the mirror, it means that he slaps the "mirror", which is the water reflecting, that he slaps the water so he can't see himself because of the ripples. I think he did this action because looking at himself made him think of what happened and he got sad when he looked at himself.

    2. I think he kept his hatchet close to him for the first time because I think that he thought that the bear might come back and try to harm him, so he wanted something that could protect him.

    1. I like the way you described what happened when he slapped the lake because of him seeing his reflection in it also I like the way you talked about the hatchet being able to protect him and the way you got your point across while keeping your answer short :)

  17. I think Brian destroys the image because the last thing he needs is his own reflection making him feel insecure when he is barely living of dirty lake water and a raspberry bush.

Brian kept his hatchet close to him to give him the comfort of knowing that if he encounters a more vicious "beast" he can defend himself, and potentially save his life.

  18. Q1
Brian was trying to destroy the image of himself in the water. The water was like a mirror showing his reflection.
Q2. Brian was going to keep the hatchet near him for the first time because the bear or another dangerous animal might attack him. He felt like he needed to protect himself. He couldn't stop thinking about the bear.

  20. 1.He ment by distroy the mirror by making ripples in the water.

2.I think he kept the hatchet by him because he was scard of the bear .

  21. 1.I think what is meant by Brian tries to destroy the mirror is by slapping the water is he could see his reflection in the water so by slapping it he would create ripples in the water making him unable to see his reflection clearly so he did this because he thought he looked ugly with all the things described in the book on his body and face.

2.I think Brian slept with his hatchet close to him because he could use the hatchet to defend himself if the bear just happened to find him while going to get water from the lake maybe, and has tries to hurt him this time for whatever reason.

  23. 1. It means that Brian does not want to look at his reflection because he thinks he looks ugly. He feels this way because mosquitoes have bitten him all over his face, there is a cut on his forehead and his face is so swollen that his eyes look like slits.

    2. I think Brian decided to keep his hatchet close because he was scared the bear might come back. Even though nothing happened in his first encounter he did not want to be unarmed in case the bear returned while he was sleeping.

  27. 1. In Chptr. 7, Brian does not like what he sees as he saw his reflection in the water. "Ugly; very, very ugly" he thought. He slaps the water with his hand to destroy the mirror. That he was trying to destroy the reflection in the lake by trying to move the water around and make it were he cant see his reflection that he thinks is ugly because of the cuts, bad hair and bumps from mosquitoes biting him.

2.In Chptr. 7, Brian encounters a bear. Yet, the bear causes him no harm. Regardless, the encounter is very much still in Brian's thoughts. As darkness came into his shelter, Brian took the hatchet out of his belt, putting it by his head and holding the handle. I think that Brian is holding the hatchet close to him while he sleeps because he knows there is a bear out there somewhere. So he could be referring to what Mr. Perpich said about being prepared staying on top of things. So then he could protect himself easily from anything that tries to hurt him, specifically the bear because he knows its there.

Question2:I think for the first time Bryan realized what could happen to him if he wasn't prepared for a attack.

  31. 1. Brian said that he was ugly because he had rashes, bug bites and dirt on his face, so he destroyed the water '' mirror'' in the lake so he could not not see himself ugly.2.He kept the hatchet close to him if the bear or a different sort of harmless animal to Brian may come after to kill him and eat him.
